Error-compensating phase-shifting algorithm for surface shape measurement of transparent plate using wavelength-tuning Fizeau interferometer

When measuring the surface shape of a transparent sample using wavelength-tuning Fizeau interferometry, the calculated phase is critically determined by not only phase-shift errors, but also by coupling errors between higher harmonics and phase-shift errors. This paper presents the derivation of a 13 sample phase-shifting, algorithm that can compensate for miscalibration and first-order nonlinearity of phase shift, coupling errors, and bias modulation of the intensity, and has strong suppression of the second reflective harmonic effect. The characteristics of the 13-sample algorithm are estimated with respect to Fourier representation in the frequency domain. The phase error of measurement performed using the 13-sample algorithm is discussed and compared with those of measurements obtained using other conventional phase-shifting algorithms. Finally, the surface shape of a fused silica wedge plate obtained using a wavelength tuning Fizeau interferometer and the 13-sample algorithm are presented. The experimental results indicate that the surface shape measurement accuracy for a transparent fused silica plate is 3 nm. The accuracy of the measurement is discussed by comparing the amplitudes of the crosstalk noise calculated using other conventional algorithms. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

As developing science and technology, traditional two-dimensional computer vision cannot meet the people's needs for the three-dimensional recognition, and the depth information of objects are required by more and more applications. Recently, structured light has become one of the core techniques of depth acquisition. The main idea of the approach is first projecting pre-designed pattern onto objects, then capturing an image and processing further. In a structured light system, the phase-shifting algorithm, which is a depth acquiring algorithm for sinusoidal pattern, is discussed in this paper, and is argued that its performance weakness for applying in the real time environments. Then we propose the performance optimization on its phase wrapping step and phase unwrapping step, respectively. Finally, we compare acquiring results and advantages as well as disadvantages of them by experiments results. Experiments show that the optimized phase-shifting algorithm is 4.6x faster than the original one with the ignorable errors.

Carre ' algorithm is a classic phase shifting measurement method due to its advantage in resisting the error caused by inaccurate phase step. The conventional Carre ' algorithm only calculates the wrapped phase, so multiple frequencies are used to unwrap the phase so as to obtain the absolute phase, which increases the number of patterns and decreases the measuring speed. We propose a high-accuracy and 4-pattern phase retrieval method based on Carre ' algorithm. The phase step in Carre ' algorithm is encoded as a linear variable. With the linear phase step, we obtain both the wrapped phase and absolute phase simultaneously from only 4 patterns. The proposed method is non-sensitive to the errors in phase step, the same as the conventional Carre ' algorithm. In addition, because only 4 patterns are required for obtaining the wrapped phase and absolute phase, the proposed method is practical in high-speed 3D measurement. Experimental results demonstrate its performance in high accuracy (absolute accuracy is higher than 0.02 mm and relative accuracy is higher than 0.03%), efficiency (requires only 4 patterns) and robustness.

In our earlier work, a group of error-compensating phase shifting algorithms with known phase step of pi/2 has been derived, and the optimal phase steps for Carre algorithm and Stoilov-Dragostinov algorithm were determined and a good and recommended choice is also pi/2. This paper gives a further evidence of error compensating merits of these algorithms. Theoretical analysis, as well as computer simulation is given for evaluating the phase errors due to the most common error sources, such as linear and quadric phase shifter errors, quadric detector error and additive random-error.

Four-image-based 3D measurement approach employing Hilbert transform

To improve the three-dimensional (3D) measurement efficiency, an efficient and robust absolute phase extraction algorithm based on only four images employing the Hilbert transform (HT) is proposed. First, since the HT does not filter the background intensity well, the background intensity is captured and subtracted from a high- frequency fringe, which is used to generate a phase-shifted pi/2 fringe, from which the high-frequency wrapped phase is calculated. Next, low-frequency sine and cosine fringe images are captured, and the low-frequency wrapped phase is extracted using a 2 + 1 phase shifting algorithm (PSA). Finally, the absolute phase is robustly extracted based on the dual-frequency hierarchical temporal phase unwrapping (HTPU), the combination of PSA and HTPU ensures the reliability of the proposed method. This paper analyzes the effect of fringe tilt on HT and gives the corresponding improvement methods. The article also explores the noise immunity of the proposed algorithm, and investigates the possibility of further reducing the frame number in the algorithm. Simulations and experiments verify the effectiveness of the method. Compared to the currently most efficient method combining PSA and HTPU, the frame numbers are reduced by 20 % with only a slight loss in accuracy.

Comparative study of variant shifting-phase coding method based on noise error model

phase shifting algorithm, which is well-known for its high-accuracy and high-resolution, plays a crucial role in fringe projection profilometry. A class of variant shifting-phase coding method (VSPCM) has been proposed for high-speed 3D measurement. The three kinds of VSPCM include the inner shifting-phase method (ISPM), the intensity-coded method (ICM) and the modified Carre algorithm (MCA). These methods project only four patterns avoiding the need for extra images, yet achieve accuracy comparable to the classical three-frequency heterodyne method. In VSPCM, the shifting-phase, as a key code-word for phase unwrapping, is encoded as a variable value. In practice, the noise and the encoding of shifting-phase have varying degrees of impact on the performance of these methods. But the coded ranges of the shifting-phase were previouly empirical values. Besides, there are no studies related to these factors, and also a lack of comparative researches on such methods. This paper compares three kinds of VSPCM for the first time. We derive the noise error models for shifting-phase and wrapped phase in three methods and examine the impact of variant shifting-phase on fringe orders and wrapped phase in these methods. We find that the abnormal shifting-phase errors predominantly cause fringe orders errors. Fortunately, median filtering can effectively handle shifting-phase errors to ensure successful phase unwrapping. To improve their accuracy, we also deduce that the optimal shifting-phase encoding range is [-77 degrees, 77 degrees] for ISPM, and is [-61 degrees, 61 degrees] for ICM, and is [34 degrees, 74 degrees] for MCA. For wrapped phase errors, the distributions of ICM and MCA exhibit a U-shaped distribution, while ISPM demonstrates a uniform distribution. An Improvement of Spatial Carrier phase-shifting Method

Spatial carrier phase shifting method (SCPM) retrieves the phase distribution from carrier interferograms by assuming that the phases of the processed pixel and its adjacent pixels are uniform, which introduces considerable theoretical error. A new method is presented in this paper to improve the SCPM accuracy: (1) A quadric curve is used to describe the phase distribution of the adjacent pixels; (2) The linear and quadric terms of the phase are considered as phase shifter errors; (3) Suitable phase shifting algorithms insensitive to these errors are selected. Two “5 step” algorithms are used and their properties are analyzed. An example of phase retrieving by SCPM is given and the result shows that SCPM has high theoretical accuracy. With the potential high accuracy, ability of measuring dynamic phase and computational simplicity, SCPM will become a much more useful phase measurement method.

Random phase retrieval approach using Euclidean matrix norm of sum and difference map and fast least-squares algorithm

In order to meet the requirements of the in-situ optical measurement, a random phase retrieval approach using the Euclidean matrix norm of sum and difference map and fast least-squares algorithm (EMNSD&FLSA) is proposed. It can obtain the high accuracy as the iterative algorithm and cost less computational time as the non-iterative algorithm simultaneously. No pre-filtering, iteration and relatively accurate initial phase lead to the high accuracy, fast iterative method and only two phase shifted interferograms lead to the high speed. It can obtain absolutely accurate result when the background intensity and modulation amplitude are perfect. Moreover, it is suitable for different levels of noises. If the high accuracy is required, it would be best to suppress the noise before using EMNSD&FLSA, and the phase shift would be best to far away from 0 rad and pi rad, furthermore, the numbers of patterns are best to be more than 2. Last but not least, it is robust for the circular, straight or complex fringes. The simulations and experiments verify the correctness and feasibility of EMNSD&FLSA.

Precision interferometric surface metrology of transparent thin film using wavelength tuning

Indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films are the important component in display and semiconductor industries because of their excellent electrical and optical properties. To improve the reliability and performance of these films, the surface shape and thickness should be measured accurately. In this research, the surface topography of an ITO thin film on the surface of a supporting plate was measured by wavelength tuned phase shifting interferometer and polynomial window function. The surface topography is measured by compensating for the phase difference error caused by interference of the transparent thin film. Optical interference is formulated by the phase and amplitudes determined by wavelength tuning and polynomial window function. The measurement method allows for noncontact (nondestructive), large aperture, and nanoscale measurement of highly reflective thin films.

Improved max-min scanning method for phase determination

We present an improved signal processing algorithm for the max-min scanning method for phase determination in speckle and other interferometric techniques. After recording the intensity changes at one point on the image for a range of arbitrary phase shifts, curve fitting is employed to obtain the intensity waveform corresponding to this position. The phase value is derived from this curve, and the sign of the computed phase angle is determined using the derivative of the fitting curve. The phase map is obtained by performing the same procedure throughout the entire image. This improved algorithm requires neither sorting the recorded image signals nor additional sign images.
