In this paper, we study the application of physical layer network coding to the joint design of uplink and downlink transmissions, where the base station and the relay have multiple antennas, and all mobile stations only have a single antenna. A new network coding transmission protocol is proposed, where uplink and downlink transmissions can be accomplished within two time slots. Since each single antenna user has poor receive capability, precoding at the base station and relay has been carefully designed to ensure that co-channel interference can be removed completely. Explicit analytic results have been developed to demonstrate that the multiplexing gain achieved by the proposed transmission protocol is, much better than existing time sharing schemes. To further increase the achievable diversity gain, two variations of the proposed transmission protocols have also been proposed when there are multiple relays and the number of the antennas at the base station and relay is increased. Monte-Carlo simulation results have also been provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed network coded transmission protocol.

In this work we extend the existing concept of DeNoise and Forward (DNF) for bidirectional relaying to utilise non-coherent modulation schemes. This is done in order to avoid the requirement of phase tracking in coherent detection. As an example BFSK is considered, and through analysis the decision regions for the denoise operation in DNF are identified. The throughput performance of BFSK in DNF is compared to BPSK.

We propose a physical layer network coding (PNC) scheme for the K-user wireless Multiple Access Relay Channel, in which K source nodes want to transmit messages to a destination node D with the help of a relay node R. The proposed scheme involves (i) Phase 1 during which the source nodes alone transmit and (ii) Phase 2 during which the source nodes and the relay node transmit. At the end of Phase 1, the relay node decodes the messages of the source nodes and during Phase 2 transmits a many-to-one function of the decoded messages. To counter the error propagation from the relay node, we propose a novel decoder which takes into account the possibility of error events at R. It is shown that if certain parameters are chosen properly and if the network coding map used at R forms a Latin Hypercube, the proposed decoder offers the maximum diversity order of two. Also, it is shown that for a proper choice of the parameters, the proposed decoder admits fast decoding, with the same decoding complexity order as that of the reference scheme based on Complex Field network coding (CFNC). Simulation results indicate that the proposed PNC scheme offers a large gain over the CFNC scheme.

This letter investigates the use of spectrally efficient pulse shapes in a physical layer network coding (PNC) system. A multi-user detector is used in the form of a maximum likelihood sequence estimator that accounts for offsets in timing, amplitude and phase between the two incoming signals in the multiple-access phase of a PNC system. It is found that with root-raised cosine (RRC) pulses, the PNC system is much more sensitive to timing offset in terms of the performance of the receiver relative to when rectangular pulses are used. Simulation results confirm that it is necessary to keep the incoming signals aligned to within about 1/10th of a symbol interval to avoid substantial performance loss.

An information exchange problem between two source nodes over a network relay hub is considered where the downlink wireless broadcast channels from the hub to each node are asymmetrical, with different received SNRs. Conventional XOR network coding uses a single downlink FEC with a code rate that protects the node with the smaller received SNR, thereby penalizing the achievable information throughput to the node with larger received SNR. This paper presents an alternative physical network coding scheme that allows different downlink FECs from the hub to each node with different code rates and different data encoding lengths to achieve optimum capacity and information throughput results.

In this paper, various physical layer network coding (PNC) schemes are revisited for wireless two-way relay channel in single antenna case. The achievable rates are reviewed for AWGN channel and newly derived for fading channel for all these PNC schemes employing lattice codes and lattice decoding. A new transmit scheme using precoding is proposed over fading channel to achieve higher rates. It is revealed that for two-way relay channel, compute-and-forward can achieve the highest rate over both AWGN channel and fading channel. Thus it is the most suitable PNC scheme for two-way relay.

We proposed the physical layer security (PLS) under the untrusted relay in the wireless communication with the physical layer network coding (PLNC). In PLNC, the two information source accesses the relay station, simultaneously and thus it is difficult for the relay station to demodulate each signal due to the masking-effect from the other signal. As a result, the leakage of information to the untrusted relay is avoidable. The transmit power control (TPC) for the balancing between the two received signal powers is powerful. The secure capacity is enlarged but has not been optimized for maximizing the secure capacity. In this paper, the quasi-optimization of TPC for enlarging secure capacity is derived in the wireless communication with the untrusted relay and PLNC.

physical layer network coding (PNC) is a promising technique used to improve the network throughput in a wireless two-way relay (TWR) channel. In this paper, the PNC technique is embraced for a TWR-free space optical (FSO) communication link for the full utilization of network resources. Such a scheme is particularly useful in situations where multiple nodes wish to exchange their information but there is no direct link between them. Compared with a traditional relay-assisted FSO link, the new scheme uses two phases in a round loop for a TWR transmissions link. We present simulation results for the bit error rate (BER) performance of the proposed system considering the effect of both the atmospheric turbulence and the path loss using subcarrier intensity modulation binary phase shift keying (SIM-BPSK). The result shows that for the TWR FSO link based PNC technique under an atmospheric channel with a weak fading strength of 0.3, a BER of 10(-4) is achieved at a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of similar to 25dB.

This paper analyzes the performance of the physical layer network coding (PLNC) approach based on Decode-and-Forward (DF) and operating in multipath fading channel. In actual channel affected by multipath fading the DF method has poor performance since the relay node cannot properly perform data decoding. In addition the decoding at the relay requires the knowledge of the channels involved in the communication with a consequent signaling overhead. In order to overcome these problems this paper proposes an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (OFDM) system where the pre-emphasis approach is considered jointly with an efficient method of subcarrier suppression named Blind Subcarrier Suppression (BSS). Simulations results show that BSS achieves high throughput with a Bit Error Probability (BER) near to that of a classical OFDM system in multipath channel.

In RFID(Radio Frequency IDentification)system,when multiple tags are in the operating range of one reader and send their information to the reader simultaneously,the signals of these tags are superimposed in the air,which results in a collision and leads to the degrading of tags identifying *** improve the multiple tags’identifying efficiency due to collision,a physical layer network coding based binary search tree algorithm(PNBA)is proposed in this *** pushes the conflicting signal information of multiple tags into a stack,which is discarded by the traditional anti-collision *** addition,physical layer network coding is exploited by PNBA to obtain unread tag information through the decoding operation of physical layer network coding using the conflicting information in the ***,PNBA reduces the number of interactions between reader and tags,and improves the tags identification *** analysis and simulation results using MATLAB demonstrate that PNBA reduces the number of readings,and improve RFID identification ***,when the number of tags to be identified is 100,the average needed reading number of PNBA is 83%lower than the basic binary search tree algorithm,43%lower than reverse binary search tree algorithm,and its reading efficiency reaches 0.93.
