Subcarriers Suppression Methods for OFDM Systems with Decode-and-Forward network coding

This paper deals with the performance evaluation of Decode and Forward physical layer network coding schemes under multipath fading channel propagation conditions. physical layer network coding in Two Way Relay networks ideally allows to drastically increase the network throughput. However, under the assumption of actual channel propagation conditions, the performance quickly degrades due to high decoding error probability. With the aim of counteracting this drawback, the paper proposes a suitable approach for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing systems based on a signal pre-equalization technique. Furthermore, in order to lower the decoding error probability, three subcarriers suppression methods are introduced. These methods differ from each other for the performance achieved and the required amount of signaling that nodes have to exchange. An important result obtained here is that the combined use of channel inversion and subcarriers suppression allows to enhance the system reliability with a slight decrease of the throughput.

Wireless Backhaul networks With Precoding Complex Field network coding

In this paper, we propose a network coding scheme for up-link wireless backhaul networks to increase the throughput while guaranteeing full diversity order. The key advance proposed is the employment of precoding complex fieldmatrices for two user and two base station backhaul networks to achieve throughput of 1 symbol/channel use while guaranteeing full diversity order for this one-way two-hop communications setting. In particular, the throughput of the considered wireless backhaul network using the proposed network coding scheme is 50% higher than that using conventional complex field network coding (CFNC) and 200% higher than that using conventional amplify-and-forward (AF) relay transmission. Importantly, the considered network obtains full diversity order, i.e., the diversity order is the same as that of the respective conventional CFNC and AF relay networks. Numerical results indicate that the simulation results of the pairwise error probability tightly converge to the asymptotic curves in the high signal-to-noise ratio.

Hierarchical Pairwise Error Probability for Hierarchical Decode and Forward Strategy in PLNC

Pairwise error probability (PEP) is an essential tool allowing to design practical optimized coding schemes. It reveals the connection between the performance and the decoding metric that is directly related to the codeword and/or constellation properties. The application of this principle to the hierarchical PEP used to describe the decoding performance of many-to-one message functions (hierarchical network code maps) in physical layer network coding (PLNC) is addressed in this letter. Unlike for the single-user case, the hierarchical PEP reveals a complicated dependence on the structure of the hierarchical codeword/constellation. The structure is defined in terms of hierarchical distance and hierarchical self-distance spectra. We show that the network coded modulation (NCM) minimizing the hierarchical decoding error probability should have zero self-distance spectrum leading to self-folded NCM design criterion.

This letter proposes a polarization mapping (PM) for polar coded modulation with physical network coding (PM-PNC) over two-way relay channels (TWRC). The achievable information rates (AIRs) of the mapped bits within a XOR symbol from bit-wise XOR of two user symbols are significantly different, since the users adopt non-uniform PAM modulation to avoid mapping ambiguity. In the polar-coded PM-PNC, the original channels associated with the split information bit channel are mapped to the XOR bit stream with a larger AIR. In this way, the achieved rate of the split information channels can be maximized and is illustrated in distribution of split bit channel AIRs. Simulation results show that the proposed PM-PNC can achieve significant performance gains of more than 0.5 dB as compared to the bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) and multilevel coded (MLC) PNC systems over Gaussian and block fading channels.

Collision Recovery in Distributed Wireless networks with Opportunistic Cooperation

In this letter we focus on the problem of recovering information from collided packets in distributed wireless networks that are based on the IEEE 802.11 standard. We propose a cooperative protocol that employs the concept of physical layer network coding for this purpose. With the proposed protocol relay nodes opportunistically forward locally collided packets to the destinations. Subsequently, the destination nodes recover the desired packet by employing a detection algorithm that combines the directly-collided and forwarded-collided signals.

In this paper, we study an interference relay network with a satellite as relay. We propose a cooperative strategy based on physical layer network coding and superposition modulation decoding for uni-directional communications among users. The performance of our solution in terms of throughput is evaluated through capacity analysis and simulations that include practical constraints such as the lack of synchronization in time and frequency. We obtain a significant throughput gain compared to the classical time sharing case.

Most previous researches on the rate analysis of the power allocation (PA) schemes in two-way decode-and-forward (DF) relay systems typically focus on maximizing the instantaneous objective rates. However, the ergodic rate analysis of the optimized rates is not well considered. In this paper, we investigate the ergodic rates of the PA schemes in a two-way DF relay system, where the physical-layer network coding (PNC) protocol is adopted. Specifically, under a total power constraint, we consider three heuristic PA schemes, in which the optimization objectives are: 1) maximizing the sum rate;2) maximizing the sum rate with an additional rate fairness constraint;and 3) maximizing the minor rate of the two directions of the system. The cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) of the equivalent system SNR are approximately obtained and the analytical expressions for the calculations of the ergodic rates are theoretically derived. Numerical results show that the derived analytical rates are converged to the simulated results in high SNR regions.

In this paper, compute-and-forward physical layer network coding (PNC) scheme is investigated for wireless two-way relay channel. The achievable rates are reviewed both for AWGN channel and fading channel. New transmit schemes by using channel inversion precoding are proposed over fading channel to achieve much higher rates. It is revealed that with the proposed channel aware precoding scheme, the performance of compute-and-forward improves enormously. For two-way relay channel, compute-and-forward can achieve the maximum degree of freedom (DoF) of 2 without the limitation of Diophantine tradeoff, which indicates that compute-and-forward is the most suitable relaying scheme for two-way relay channel.

This paper presents an improvement to the end-to-end bit error rate (E2E-BER) performance of turbo-coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing for physical layer network coding (TC-OFDM-PLNC) over power line communication (PLC) channels in the presence of impulsive noise. A novel detection scheme is introduced to transform the transmit signal constellation based on the frequency-domain channel coefficients in order to improve the performance of the turbo decoder at the relay node and end nodes, respectively, on a link-by-link (LBL) basis utilizing newly derived noise probability density functions (PDFs). Moreover, the closed-form expressions of the BER at the relay, end nodes and E2E are derived, in addition to the E2E average BER upper-bound (AUB). Monte Carlo simulation results closely verify the validity of the derived analytical expressions and reveal that the proposed method utilizing exact derived PDFs for impulsive probability alpha = 10(-1) gives coding gains of 4.5 dB and 8.5 dB at P-e = 10(-4) for the minimum mean square error (MMSE) and the zero forcing (ZF) equalizers, respectively, compared to the conventional TC-OFDM-PLNC system.

We present a suboptimal multicast strategy to facilitate the communication in the two-way relay (TWR) channel with multiple antennas using physical layer network coding (PNC). We study the sum-rate of the TWR channel and find an upper bound. Such a system enjoys the benefits of having fewer time slots due to the use of PNC and the additional spatial degree of freedom created by multiple antennas. The same number of antennas is assumed in the relay and two terminals, which makes the multicast problem much more complicated. With the assumption of channel reciprocity and the CSI at the transmitters, we design a suboptimal codebook for the multicast and a criterion for the uplink data rates selection to optimize the sum-rate. The analysis shows that the data rate achieved via this suboptimal multicast scheme is very close to the optimal multicast capacity. We also observe in the optimization process that maximizing the uplink data rates may not increase the sum-rate and instead, they should be adjusted according to the downlink data rate in order to maximize the sum-rate of the TWR channel.
