Full Duplex Relay Based Cognitive Radio System with physical layer network coding

In this paper, a full duplex relay (FDR) based cognitive radio (CR) system is proposed with two secondary source nodes and two secondary destination nodes. The concept of physical layer network coding (PLNC) is applied on decode and forward (DF) FDR to ensure that both source nodes can transmit data to both destination nodes. Further, the availability of multiple spectrum bands enables CR system to decode source symbols at destination nodes. The major advantage of the proposed system with FDR and PLNC is that it requires only one time slot to send the data from both the source nodes to both the destination nodes. If FDR is replaced with half duplex relay (HDR), 2 time slots are required for the CR system. If PLNC is not applied at the DF relay, the CR system would require 2 or 4 time slots when FDR or HDR is employed, respectively. In Nakagami- fading channels environment, analytical expressions are derived for end-to-end outage performance of the proposed PLNC based system in the presence of echo interference at the FDR and with HDR in the place of FDR. The outage performance of the proposed CR system is analyzed for various scaling and shape parameters of Nakagami- fading channels.

Multi-Input physical layer network coding in Two-Dimensional Wireless Multihop networks

This paper proposes multi-input physical layer network coding (multi-input PLNC) for high speed wireless communication in two-dimensional wireless multihop networks. In the proposed PLNC, all the terminals send their packets simultaneously for the neighboring relays to maximize the network throughput in the first slot, and all the relays also do the same to the neighboring terminals in the second slot. Those si-multaneous signal transmissions cause multiple signals to be received at the relays and the terminals. Signal reception in the multi-input PLNC uses multichannel filtering to mitigate the difficulties caused by the multi-ple signal reception, which enables the two-input PLNC to be applied. In addition, a non-linear precoding is proposed to reduce the computational complexity of the signal detection at the relays and the terminals. The proposed multi-input PLNC makes all the terminals exchange their packets with the neighboring terminals in only two time slots. The performance of the proposed multi-input PLNC is confirmed by computer simulation. The proposed multi-input physical layer network coding achieves much higher network throughput than conventional techniques in a two-dimensional mul-tihop wireless network with 7 terminals. The proposed multi-input physical layer network coding attains superior transmission performance in wireless hexagonal multihop networks, as long as more than 6 antennas are placed on the terminals and the relays.

Secret Data Transmission in Wireless Sensor network with physical layer network coding

In this paper, the physical layer network coding is applied into wireless sensor network for secret data transmission. The source node will send the gathered data to the sink node with help of multiple relay nodes. By applying the physical layer network coding, the received signal at the relay nodes is guaranteed to be a summed signal which cannot be separated. Thus, the attack from untrusted relays as well as external eavesdroppers can be prevented. Two types of coding algorithm has been discussed, one for BPSK coding and another for nested lattice coding. Analysis is also conduct for the proposed protocol. In the view of transmission, the proposed protocol can achieve the same time slots cost as the non -security protocol. In the view of security, the proposed protocol can successfully against the attacks identical with cryptography approach, however less hardware and computational complexity will be consumed for the proposed protocol.

In this paper, the power allocation problem in a relay-assisted cognitive radio network (CRN) is considered where the secondary users exchange information in an interweave mode on the basis of physical layer network coding. In order to enhance the capacity of CRN, using multiple-input multiple-output and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing has become very popular in the literature. This paper goes one step further to improve the throughput of secondary users using physical layer network coding by drawing off the transmission time. The main goal is to maximize the capacity of CRN, while keeping the total interference imposed on the primary users under a certain threshold. An optimal solution to this power allocation problem with limited relay power constraint, due to the limited budget, is derived;however, because of the high complexity of this method, an efficient suboptimal solution is also proposed.

Spatial modulation and physical layer network coding based bidirectional relay network with transmit antenna selection over Nakagami-m fading channels

In this paper, a high data rate bidirectional relay network is proposed by combining the merits of spatial modulation (SM) and physical layer network coding. All nodes in the network are equipped with multiple antennas. Spatial modulation technique is used to reduce hardware complexity and interchannel interference by activating only one antenna at any time during transmission. In the proposed bidirectional relay network, transmit antennas are selected at the source nodes and relay node on the basis of the order statistics of channel power. It increases received signal power and provides a significant improvement in the outage performance. Also, the data rate of the proposed network is improved by physical layer network coding at the relay node. A closed form analytical expression for the outage probability of the network over Nakagami-m fading channel is derived and validated by Monte Carlo simulations. In addition, asymptotic analysis is investigated at high signal-to-noise ratio *** outage performance of the proposed network is compared with SM and physical layer network coding bidirectional relay network without transmit antenna selection and point-to-point SM. With approximate SNR approximate to 1dB difference between the two networks, the same data rate is achieved.

Performance analysis of joint dual relay selection and physical layer network coding in two-way relay channels

In this paper, we study joint dual relay- selection (RS) and physical network coding (PNC) schemes for wireless two-way relay channels. We propose four schemes in which the sources transmit information to the relays and two "best" relays are selected based on minimum bit-error-rate (BER) criterion. Then, the selected relays combine the received information from sources and broadcast it towards each other. The BER of the proposed schemes are obtained analytically and also verified through Monte Carlo simulations. The results indicate that the schemes have superior performance compared to an existing work which uses Alamouti space-time block codes (STBC).

This paper proposes novel simplified maximum likelihood detection for XOR physical layer network coding (XOR-PNC) in bi-directional wireless relay systems with Quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK). The proposed detection applies unitary precoding to achieve superior performance without computationally prohibitive exhaustive search. The performance of the XOR employing the proposed simplified MLD with the precoding is analyzed in relay systems with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The performance of the XOR-PNC with the proposed techniques is also evaluated by computer simulation. The XOR-PNC with the proposed techniques achieves about 7 dB better performance than the amplify-and-forward physical layer network coding in the 5-path fading channel at BER= 10(-4). It is also shown that the XOR-PNC with the proposed techniques achieves better performance than that without precoding.

Near optimal power allocation in two-way relay systems with physical layer network coding

In this study, the authors examine the power allocation (PA) in a two-way relay system, where the relay adopts physical layer network coding based on decode-and-forward protocol. In the PA, the optimisation objective is to minimise the end-to-end symbol error probability (SEP) under a total power constraint. Since the optimal power allocation (OPA) scheme requires numerical methods (for exhaustive search) to find the solution, which might be infeasible for practical systems, the authors propose a near optimal power allocation (NOPA) scheme that has a closed-form solution by studying the properties of the OPA scheme. The asymptotic SEP expression of the proposed NOPA scheme is also derived. Simulation results show that the performance of proposed NOPA scheme is quite close to that of the OPA scheme. Furthermore, it is shown that the NOPA scheme can provide asymptotic SNR gains of 1.76 dB and 2.22 dB over two well-known schemes.

Node localization through physical layer network coding: Bootstrap, security, and accuracy

Previous research on physical layer network coding (PNC) focuses on the improvements in bandwidth usage efficiency. Its capability to assist wireless nodes in localization was first discussed in [1]. In that paper, however, the authors discussed only the basic idea to detect and separate the interfered signals for calculating the node positions. Many important issues to turn the idea into a practical approach are not extensively studied. In this paper, we plan to investigate these problems. Specifically, our research focuses on the bootstrap procedures, security, and localization accuracy of the PNC based mechanism. We first study the required node density to bootstrap the localization procedure in both infrastructure-based and self-organized networks. With this question answered, researchers can recognize the network scenarios to which PNC based localization can be applied. We design mechanisms to protect integrity of the exchanged information and defend against node impersonation attacks so that the localization procedures will be robust against malicious activities. For localization accuracy, we study the negative impacts of the position errors of the anchor nodes. We design two mechanisms to reduce the localization inaccuracy for both individual nodes and cumulative procedures through excluding the anchor nodes with positioning errors and introducing multiple bootstrap areas. Both simulation and theoretical analysis are used to support our investigation. This research shows that PNC based node localization can satisfy the security and accuracy requirements of different types of wireless networks and it can be widely deployed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Eigenvalue Based Relay Selection for XOR-physical layer network coding in Bi-Directional Wireless Relaying networks

This paper proposes relay selection techniques for XOR physical layer network coding with MMSE based non-linear precoding in MIMO bi-directional wireless relaying networks. The proposed selection techniques are derived on the di fferent assumption about characteristics of the MMSE based non-linear precoding in the wireless network. We show that the signal to noise power ratio (SNR) is dependent on the product of all the eigenvalues in the channels from the terminals to relays. This paper shows that the best selection techniques in all the proposed techniques is to select a group of the relays that maximizes the product. Therefore, the selection technique is called "product of all eigenvalues (PAE)" in this paper. The performance of the proposed relay selection techniques is evaluated in a MIMO bi-directional wireless relaying network where two terminals with 2 antennas exchange their information via relays. When the PAE is applied to select a group of the 2 relays out of the 10 relays where an antenna is placed, the PAE attains a gain of more than 13dB at the BER of 10(-3).
