physical layer network coding (PNC) is a promising technique to improve the network throughput in a wireless two-way relay (TWR) channel. The PNC is embraced for TWR with free space optical (FSO) communication link, TWR-FSO, for full utilization of network resources. In this paper, forward error correction (FEC) is employed with TWR-FSO PNC system. The convolutional code (CC) is considered to combat the deleterious effect of FSO turbulence channel to increase the system reliability. The performance of end-to-end (E2E) CC with TWR-FSO PNC scheme is examined in terms of bit error rate (BER) under the influence of turbulence-induced channel fading. The results show that the proposed scheme can achieve a significant BER performance improvement through the introduction of CC joint with PNC mapping, which enables the system to effectively mitigate the impact of channel.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is one of the latest technologies in bringing a certain amount of control to the rather unpredictable and uncontrollable wireless channel. In this paper, RIS is introduced in a bidirectional system with two source nodes and a Decode and Forward (DF) relay node. It is assumed that there is no direct path between the source nodes. The relay node receives information from source nodes simultaneously. The physical layer network coding (PLNC) is applied at the relay node to assist in the exchange of information between the source nodes. Analytical expressions are derived for the average probability of errors at the source nodes and relay node of the proposed RIS-assisted bidirectional relay system. The Bit Error Rate (BER) performance is analyzed using both simulation and analytical forms. It is observed that RIS-assisted PLNC based bidirectional relay system performs better than the conventional PLNC based bidirectional system.

In linear networks with physical layer network coding (PNC), the relay node performs the combination of the relaying data from both end users. Moreover, the adaptive power allocation (APA) scheme can optimize the transmission rate of PNC for relaying communication systems. However, when the relay nodes are deployed with different distance to both of end user nodes, it is called near-far effect (NFE). The NFE degrades the bit error rate (BER) performance with deteriorating the decoding performance of PNC. Therefore, in order to further optimize the transmission power allocation (PA) for both of end user nodes and relaying node we propose a total adaptive power allocation (TAPA) scheme in this paper. With the proposed TAPA scheme, the NFE of conventional PNC systems can be diminished and the BER performance is improved. Simulation results show that the proposed TAPA improves the BER performance especially for the severe NFE environments.

We propose a practical network code for the wireless two-way relay channel where all nodes communicate in full duplex (FD) mode. The physical layer network coding (PNC) operation is applied with the FD operating nodes, reducing the transmission time to a single time slot, hence doubling the spectral efficiency when compared to classical PNC systems. In our system, binary phase shift keying modulated signals are transmitted over Rayleigh fading channels. We derive the theoretical error rates at the relay and end nodes according to the maximum likelihood detection rule, in case of non-ideal self-interference cancellation. Theoretical results are also verified via simulations.

We consider a two-way relay channel in which two transmitters want to exchange information through a central relay. The relay observes a superposition of the transmitted signals from which a function of the transmitted messages is computed for broadcast. We consider the design of codebooks which permit the recovery of a function at the relay and derive information-theoretic bounds on the rates for reliable decoding at the relay. In the spirit of compute-and-forward, we present a multilevel coding scheme that permits reliable computation (or, decoding) of a class of functions at the relay. The function to be decoded is chosen at the relay depending on the channel realization. We define such a class of reliably computable functions for the proposed coding scheme and derive rates that are universally achievable over a set of channel gains when this class of functions is used at the relay. We develop our framework with general modulation formats in mind, but numerical results are presented for the case where each node transmits using 4-ary and 8-ary modulation schemes. Numerical results demonstrate that the flexibility afforded by our proposed scheme permits substantially higher rates than those achievable by always using a fixed function or considering only linear functions over higher order fields. Our numerical results indicate that it is favorable to allow the relay to attempt both compute-and-forward and decode-and-forward decoding. Indeed, either method considered separately is suboptimal for computation over general channels. However, we obtain a converse result when the transmitters are restricted to using identical binary linear codebooks generated uniformly at random. We show that it is impossible for this code ensemble to achieve any rate higher than the maximum of the rates achieved using compute-and-forward and decode-and-forward decoding. In this paper, physical layer network coding (PLNC) based bidirectional Decode and Forward (DF) relay network is proposed using Spatial Modulated Full Duplex (SMFD) nodes. In the proposed network, the source nodes exchange two bits of information in single time slot. The Most Significant Bit (MSB) of the data symbol is used for transmit antenna selection and LSB is transmitted by the selected transmit antenna. The self-interference at the SMFD nodes are modeled as Gaussian and its variance is based on thermal noise power. Analytical expressions are derived for upper and lower bound end-to-end outage probabilities of the proposed network in Rayleigh fading environment. The outage performance of the proposed network is better than the conventional PLNC based bidirectional full duplex (CFD) relay networks.

physical layer network coding (PNC) is combined with multiple antennas to increase the spectral efficiency of wireless communication systems. In this work, we present a PNC framework including both uplink and downlink for binary phase shift keying (BPSK). In the uplink, we propose a scheme for detecting network-coded symbol (NCS) with reduced complexity. For the downlink, we propose a transmission scheme of NCS through maximum ratio transmission (MRT) by defining the precoding vector as an average of users' channels. The bit-error-rate (BER) performances and the comparison results with the conventional scheme in both downlink and uplink are provided for the proposed low-complexity PNC framework.

Previous research on physical layer network coding (PNC) focuses on the improvements in bandwidth usage efficiency. In this paper, we propose a PNC-based node localization mechanism. When two signal sequences collide at the receiver, the starting point of collision is determined by the distances between the receiver and senders. When the signal interference results from two receivers are combined together, we can determine a hyperbola with two senders as the respective focal points. In this way, by using multiple pairs of anchor nodes as senders, we can determine multiple hyperbolas and the node position will be at the intersection point of these hyperbolas. The proposed approach does not require the wireless nodes to be equipped with any special hardware such as synchronized clocks. We propose several schemes at the physical and network layers to transform the idea into a practical approach. We also investigate the overhead, localization accuracy, and safety of the approach.

In this paper, we present an algorithm for joint decoding of the modulo-2 sum of the bits transmitted from two unsynchronized transmitters using physical layer network coding (PLNC). We address the problems that arise when the boundaries of the signals do not align with each other and when the channel parameters are slowly varying and are not known to the receiver at the relay node. Our approach first estimates jointly the timing and fading gains of both the signals, and uses a state-based Viterbi decoding scheme that takes into account the timing offsets between the interfering signals. We also track the amplitude and phase of the channel which may be slowly varying. Simulation results demonstrate the sensitivity of the detection performance at the relay node to the relative offset of the timings of the two user's signals as well as the advantage of our algorithm over previously published algorithms.

Recently, there has been a growing interest in improving the performance of the wireless relay networks through the use of physical layer network coding (PLNC) techniques. The physical layer network coding technique allows two terminals to transmit simultaneously to a relay node and decode the modulo-2 sum of the transmitted bits at the relay. This technique considerably improves performance over Digital network coding technique. In this thesis, we will present an algorithm for joint decoding of the modulo-2 sum of bits transmitted from two unsynchronized transmitters at the relay. We shall also address the problems that arise when boundaries of the signals do not align with each other and when the channel parameters are slowly varying and are unknown to the receiver at the relay node. Our approach will first jointly estimate the timing o sets and fading gains of both signals using a known pilot sequence sent by both transmitters in the beginning of the packet and then perform Maximum Likelihood detection of data using a state-based Viterbi decoding scheme that takes into account the timing o sets between the interfering signals. We shall present an algorithm for simultaneously tracking the amplitude and phase of slowly varying wireless channel that will work in conjunction our Maximum Likelihood detection algorithm. Finally, we shall provide extension of our receiver to support antenna diversity. Our results show that the proposed detection algorithm works reasonably well, even with the assumption of timing misalignment. We also demonstrate that the performance of the algorithm is not degraded by amplitude and/or phase mismatch between the users. We further show that the performance of the channel tracking algorithm is close to the ideal case i.e. when the channel estimates are perfectly known. Finally, we demonstrate the performance boost provided by the receiver antenna diversity.
