Robust precoder-decoder design for physical layer network coding-based MIMO two-way relaying system

In this paper, we investigate a robust joint precoder-decoder design scheme for a multiple-input multiple-output physical layer network coding (PNC)-based two-way relay system. An orthogonal training sequence is used to estimate the channels. The estimate is imperfect, and a robust design is proposed to find precoders at the source nodes and decoder at the relay node to facilitate PNC operations during multiple-access stage. Both channel estimation error and antenna correlations are used to formulate the optimization problem to minimize the weighted mean square error (WMSE) under a total power constraint. The problem becomes non-convex, and we propose an algorithm to solve it optimally. During the broadcast stage, an algorithm is proposed to find a precoder at the relay node and decoders at source nodes. The system performance is evaluated with estimation error and antenna correlation parameters. The effect of weighting parameters, relay location, and number of antennas at nodes are also considered in the numerical analysis. Numerical results confirm that our joint precoder-decoder algorithms provide the optimal solution to the minimization of WMSE with the total available power.

Recent advancements in high data rate networks have led to a growing interest in improving performance of wireless relay networks through the use of physical layer network coding (PLNC) technique. In the PLNC technique, the relay node exploits the network coding operation that occurs naturally when the two electromagnetic (EM) waves are superimposed on one another to directly decode the modulo-2 sum of the transmitted symbols. In this thesis, we will present an optimal power control algorithm for performance improvement in wireless relay nodes implementing physical layer network coding. We shall also present a sub-optimal power control algorithm and compare its performance with the optimal power control algorithm. Our approach will ﬁrst derive the probability of error for the amplitude-controlled system using Maximum Likelihood detection and then minimize the probability of error using amplitude control functions as variables to derive the optimal power control functions. We shall start by considering the thresholds of the system to be the maximum of the independent received amplitudes to derive the probability of error equations and then extend it to a variable threshold system, where the threshold is a function of independent received amplitudes. We then derive an optimal power control algorithm for a single channel Rayleigh system and implement this power control algorithm independently on the terminals to achieve a sub-optimal power control algorithm. Our results show that the proposed optimal power control algorithm boosts the performance of the PLNC system signiﬁcantly compared to the no power control system. We also show that there are no signiﬁcant diﬀerences between the performances of optimal power control and the sub-optimal power control algorithms. We further show that the performance of the system is not degraded much when the amplitudes of the terminals deviate from the optimal amplitudes.

Detecting Primary User Emulation Attacks in Cognitive Radio networks via physical layer network coding

Primary user emulation (PUE) attacks on cognitive radio networks pose a serious threat to the deployment of this technique. Previous approaches usually depend on individual or combined received signal strength (RSS) measurements to detect emulators. In this paper, we propose a new mechanism based on physical layer network coding to detect the emulators. When two signal sequences interfere at the receiver, the starting point of collision is determined by the distances among the receiver and the senders. Using the signal interference results at multiple receivers and the positions of reference senders, we can determine the position of the ‘claimed’ primary user. We can then compare this localization result with the known position of the primary user to detect the PUE attack. We design a PUE detection mechanism for wireless networks with trustworthy reference senders. We analyze the overhead of the proposed approach and study its detection accuracy through simulation.

physical-layer network coding (PNC) has been proposed for next generation networks. In this paper, we investigate PNC schemes with embedded perfect secrecy by exploiting structured interference in relay networks with two users and a single relay. In a practical scenario where both users employ finite and uniform signal input distributions, we establish upper bounds (UBs) on the achievable perfect secrecy rates and make these explicit when pulse amplitude modulation modems are used. We then describe two simple, explicit encoders that can achieve perfect secrecy rates close to these UBs with respect to an untrustworthy relay in the single antenna and single relay setting. Last, we generalize our system to a multiple-input multiple-output relay channel, where the relay has more antennas than the users and study optimal precoding matrices, which maintain a required secrecy constraint. Our results establish that the design of PNC transmission schemes with enhanced throughput and guaranteed data confidentiality is feasible in next generation systems.

In this paper, performance of three-time slot (3TS) physical layer network coding (PNC) is investigated in interference-limited two-way relaying system. Effective lower and upper bounds are derived for important performance metrics like outage probability and average bit error rate (BER) with different modulation modes. Asymptotic behavior is also proposed to intuitively exhibit the trend of performance in high signalto- interference and noise ratio (SINR) regime. We differentiate practical applications with different relay power for the bounds. A particular scenario with positional grid structure of sources, relay and co-channel interferers is established for numerical analysis, and the effects of some critical parameters, such as relay;s location, forwarding capability and power allocation factor, are compared and discussed. The theoretic solutions are finally verified by simulation results.

physical layer network coding (PNC) exploits the broadcast nature of wireless channel to obtain transmission efficiency gains. This paper proposes a hybrid field physical layer network coding (HFNC) approach and applys HFNC to the multi-user relay networks. The proposed method enables a reliable transmission with variable throughput under different signal-to-noise ratios (SNR). With given constellation rotations at sources, the points of the equivalent superpositioned (ESP) constellation cluster. The HFNC-based decoding can be divided into two layers. Point-level (PL) decoding over the complex-field achieves a higher throughput as complex field network coding (CFNC), while cloud-level decoding defined in the finite-field is able to resist bad channel with a lower throughput. Excellent performances of symbol error probability (SEP) and transmission efficiency are proved by both theoretical analysis and simulation results.

We propose a practical network code for the wireless two-way relay channel where all nodes communicate in full duplex (FD) mode. The physical layer network coding (PNC) operation is applied with the FD operating nodes, reducing the transmission time to a single time slot, hence doubling the spectral efficiency when compared to classical PNC systems. In our system, binary phase shift keying modulated signals are transmitted over Rayleigh fading channels. We derive the theoretical error rates at the relay and end nodes according to the maximum likelihood detection rule, in case of non-ideal self-interference cancellation. Theoretical results are also verified via simulations.

An Efficient Time Synchronization Scheme for Broadband Two-Way Relaying networks Based on physical-layer network coding

We present an efficient time synchronization scheme for broadband two-way relaying networks based on two-phase physical layer network coding. Especially, a preamble structure is proposed in this letter for the synchronization. The synchronization approach exploits the preamble in frequency domain and time domain to effectively separate the mixed signals, and jointly estimate timing-offsets and channel parameters, respectively. Numerical results confirm that the suggested method is superior to the conventional scheme, and is very suitable for the synchronization in broadband two-way relaying networks based on two-phase physical layer network coding.

In this paper, the design of multi-hop physical layer network coding (PNC) is investigated. In the existing multi-hop PNC designs, the effects of error propagation and mutualinterference are not well addressed. Error propagation refers to that the estimation error at any node may propagate to the neighboring nodes, which may result in serious end-to-end bit errors. The impact of the mutual-interference from other transmitting nodes to a receiver determines the upper bound SINR of two neighboring nodes given end-to-end SNR. By carefully addressing these issues, we propose two multi-hop PNC designs, the direct multi-hop PNC (D-MPNC) and the stored multi-hop PNC (S-MPNC), where both designs achieve the throughput upper bound of one symbol per symbol duration, which is the same as that of the traditional PNC with a single relay. There is a tradeoff between the applications of D-MPNC and S-MPNC, which targets for simple-implementation and optimal end-to-end bit error rate (BER), respectively. We provide the detailed designs of D-MPNC and S-MPNC and obtain the end-to-end BER bounds theoretically. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the performance gain of the proposed multi-hop PNC compared with the traditional PNC in terms of end-to-end BER and end-to-end throughout.

physical layer network coding (PNC) has been proposed for the two-way-relay scenario. The existing PNC solutions typically use the same modulation for the source nodes' signals which may not be desirable for practical situations when the amount of data exchanged between the two source nodes are un-equal and their links to the relay node are heterogeneous. In this paper, physical layer network coding with heterogeneous modulations (HePNC) has been proposed to further improve the spectrum and energy efficiency considering the above mentioned heterogeneity. Similar to the existing PNC, HePNC also includes two stages: the multiple access (MA) stage for two source nodes to transmit data to the relay and the broadcast (BC) stage for the relay to broadcast data to both source nodes. The main difference is that at the MA stage, HePNC can select heterogeneous modulation methods according to the channel conditions and the ratio of data to be exchanged. We present two sample designs of HePNC, including QPSK-BPSK and 8PSK-BPSK, and obtain the mapping rules for the relay's de-noising and forwarding based on the neighbor clustering algorithm. In addition, we discuss the end-to-end bit-error-rate, energy efficiency and optimal relay location selection when HePNC is used. Extensive simulations demonstrated that the proposed HePNC can substantially enhance the end-to-end throughput and the energy efficiency compared to the homogeneous PNC, and thus it is a promising technology for future green communication systems.
