An inertia-type hybrid mount combining a rubber mount and a piezostack actuator for naval shipboard equipment

This paper has been focused on developing a new hybrid mount for shipboard equipment used in naval surface ships and submarines. While the hybrid mount studied in our previous research was 100 kg-class series-type mount, the new hybrid mount has been designed as an inertia-type mount capable of supporting a static of 500 kg. The proposed mount consists of a commercial rubber resilient mount, a piezostack actuator and an inertial mass. The piezostack actuator connected with the inertial mass generates actively the control force. The performances of the proposed mount with a newly designed specific controller have been evaluated in accordance with US military specifications and compared with the passive mount. An isolation system consisting of four proposed mounts and auxiliary devices has been also tested Through a series of experimental tests, it has been confirmed that the proposed mount provides better performance than the US Navy's standard passive mounts.

A direct-drive valve (DDV) system is a kind of electrohydraulic servo valve system, in which the actuator directly drives the spool of the valve. In conventional DDV systems, the spool is generally driven by an electromagnetic actuator. Performance characteristics such as frequency bandwidth of DDV systems driven by the electromagnetic actuator are limited due to the actuator response property. In order to improve the performance characteristics of conventional DDV systems, in this work a new configuration for a direct-drive valve system actuated by a piezostack actuator with a flexible beam mechanism is proposed (in short, a piezo-driven DDV system). Its benefits are demonstrated through both simulation and experiment. After describing the geometric configuration and operational principle of the proposed valve system, a governing equation of the whole system is obtained by combining the dynamic equations of the fluid part and the structural parts: the piezostack, the flexible beam, and the spool. In the structural parts of the piezostack and flexible beam, a lumped parameter modeling method is used, while the conventional rule of the fluid momentum is used for the fluid part. In order to evaluate valve performances of the proposed system, an experimental apparatus consisting of a hydraulic circuit and the piezo-driven DDV system is established. The performance characteristics are evaluated in terms of maximum spool displacement, flow rate, frequency characteristics, and step response. In addition, in order to advocate the feasibility of the proposed dynamic model, a comparison between simulation and experiment is undertaken.

This paper proposes a new type of jetting dispenser driven by a piezostack actuator. After describing structural components of the dispensing mechanism and operating principle, a dynamic model of the dispenser is analytically formulated by considering dynamic behaviors of the piezostack-piston head and the ball-needle. The inelastic impact between the ball-needle and the ball-seat during dispensing process is also considered in the modeling. An analytical fluid-solid interaction model is then derived by integrating the dynamic behavior of the dispensing fluid. Dispensing performances such as dot size and flow rate are evaluated under various frequencies and amplitudes of the sinusoidal driving voltage applied to the piezostack actuator.

To make up for the insufficiency and instability of contact dispensers that are used for fluid dispensing in microelectronic packaging, a noncontact jetting dispenser driven by a piezostack actuator is introduced in this paper. After describing the structural components and operating principle of the dispensing mechanism, a fluid model is presented to discuss the dynamic properties of the fluid and analyze the key parameters of the proposed dispenser. The ANSYS simulation software is used to design the displacement amplifier, which is an important component of the dispenser. The maximum displacement output of 323 mu m is obtained by optimizing. Subsequently, the dynamic behavior of the displacement amplifier is measured by an optical displacement sensor. The displacement change with the driving voltage amplitude and frequency is also investigated;the maximum displacement is 320 mu m, and the error between the simulation and the measurement result is just 0.75%. In order to verify the practicality of dispenser, experiments are conducted to examine the effects of the driving voltage, backpressure, working temperature, and distance between the nozzle and the collector on the jetting performance and droplet diameter. The dispenser can dispense droplets uniformly and steadily. Its maximum jetting frequency is 65 Hz, and droplets of 1.07-mm diameter are produced by a stainless steel nozzle of 0.25-mm diameter in the experimental study, with the variation of the droplet diameter being within +/- 2%.

Dynamic characteristics and control capability of a piezostack actuator at high temperatures: experimental investigation

In this study, experiments are conducted to evaluate dynamic characteristics and position tracking control performance of a piezoelectric actuator at various temperature conditions including up to 180 degrees C. An experimental apparatus consisting of a heat chamber, piezostack actuator, a laser sensor, a gap sensor, a temperature sensor, a data acquisition board, a function generator and a computer is established. To obtain the dynamic characteristics of a commercial piezostack actuator, desired input signals, which are sinusoidal waveforms with several different frequencies, are generated by the function generator, and actual controlled output signals are detected by the laser sensor. In this experiment, the heat chamber regulates temperature conditions of the piezostack actuator for a sufficient time before starting next test. After discussing the temperature dependent dynamic properties such as blocking force, another experimental setup is established to evaluate control performance of the piezostack actuator at high temperatures. A proportional-integral-derivative feedback controller which does not require an exact dynamic model of the system is designed and experimentally realized using a microprocessor for the position tracking control. Control performances such as position tracking error are measured at various temperatures and presented in time domain.

Micro-position Control of a piezostack actuator Using Rate-Dependent Hysteretic Compensator

This paper presents a new model for hysteresis compensation of a piezostack in order to improve position control accuracy. After establishing the hysteretic relationship between output displacement of the piezostack actuator and input voltage by adopting Preisach model, a rate-dependent hysteretic compensator proposed in this work is formulated. The proposed compensator consists of two components: a rate-independent hysteresis cascaded with a dynamic component. From the first component, a compensator is designed based on the inverse Preisach model. And then, the dynamic component is eliminated using a nonlinear lag controller. In order to tune this controller, a root least square (RLS) inverse identification method is used. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hysteretic compensator, micro-position control performances are experimentally evaluated in time domain. Control performances are evaluated upon three different input voltage conditions: constant frequency, chirp and random waveforms. In addition, a comparative work between the proposed compensator and conventional rate-independent compensator is undertaken.

In this paper, vibration control performance of piezostack active engine mount system for unmanned aero vehicle (UAV) is evaluated via computer simulation. As a first step, the dynamic model of engine mount system which is supported at three points is derived. In the configuration of engine mount system, the inertia type of piezostack based active mount is installed for active vibration control. Then, the vibration level of UAV engine is measured. To attenuate the vibration which is transmitted from engine, a sliding mode controller which is robust to uncertain parameters is designed. Vibration control performances of active engine mount system are evaluated at each mount and center of gravity. Effective Control results are presented in both time and frequency domains.

Electrohydraulic servo valves have been widely used in various automatic systems which need high precision of flow rate or pressure control to provide excellent static and dynamic control performance. The servo valves are generally classified into single-stage valve and two-stage valve. Direct drive servo valve (DDV) is a kind of single-stage valve in which the actuator is directly connected to the spool of the valve. In the conventional DDVs, the spool is generally actuated by electromagnetic actuator. Therefore, performance characteristics such as the accuracy and bandwidth of the DDVs are limited due to the inherent characteristics of the actuator. In this paper, a new type of the DDV operated by piezostack actuator is proposed and the goal of the proposed DDV is to achieve an accurate control of the flow rate at high frequency. The proposed DDV consists of a piezostack actuator, a lever mechanism to amplify displacement from the piezostack actuator and a spool part. A dynamic model of piezostack driven DDV system is derived by considering the flow force. After formulating the governing equation of the piezostack driven DDV system, a sliding mode control algorithm is designed to enforce the spool position to the desired position trajectories by activating the piezostack actuator. For the computer simulation, the specific geometric dimensions of the spool are chosen in order to achieve operation requirements: spool motion amplitude: over than 0.5mm;flow rate: over than 12liter/min;operating frequency: over than 200Hz. After confirming the maximum displacement of the spool and the flow rate of the valve at 200Hz, control performances are evaluated in time domain.

This paper proposes a new type of a direct-drive valve (DDV) suspension system for vehicle controlled by the piezostack actuator associated with displacement amplifier. In order to achieve this goal, a new type of controllable piezostack DDV damper is designed and its performance evaluation of damping force is undertaken. Next, a full vehicle suspension system consisting of sprung mass, spring, tire and the piezostack DDV damper is constructed. After deriving the governing equations of the motion for the proposed the piezostack DDV suspension system, the skyhook controller is implemented for the realization of the full vehicle. Analytical model of the whole suspension system is then derived and performance characteristics are analyzed through numerical simulation. Finally, vibration control responses of the vehicle suspension system such as vertical acceleration are evaluated under both bump and sine road conditions.

This article presents performance results of a novel jetting dispenser system actuated dual piezostack actuators. The proposed piezo jetting dispenser system consists of a couple of piezostack actuators, lever mechanism, and needle part. The proposed dispenser can provide a very small dispensing dot size of high viscous adhesive, 10,000cp at 100 degrees C, at a high dispensing flow rate in semi-conductor packaging processes. After describing the mechanism and operating principle of the proposed dispenser, a mathematical model of the system is obtained by considering behaviors of the piezostack, the return spring, the dispensing needle, and the adhesive fluid dynamics. For the computer simulation, the specific geometric dimensions of the proposed jetting dispenser are chosen in order to achieve operation requirements: needle motion amplitude: up to 0.15 mm;operating frequency: up to 500 Hz. With the high viscosity conditions, the dispensed amount of the adhesive and the maximum displacement of the piezo and the needle at 500Hz are evaluated in time domain.
