Tailoring Recruitment and Outreach Strategies for Underrepresented Students in Public Health pipeline programs

Studies have shown that racial and ethnic minority health professionals are more likely than those in the majority to work in predominantly underserved, largely minority communities. Increasing the pool of underrepresented racial and ethnic professionals could help reduce health disparities. Summer programs giving minority students public health training and experiences can increase the number who enter the health professions. This article describes recruitment strategies for obtaining a diverse pool of applicants for such a program as part of a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funded multisite undergraduate training program intended to increase the diversity of the public health workforce. The recruitment strategies used included institutional linkages, collaborative partnerships, and interpersonal contacts. No one strategy was more effective;however, Hispanic/Latinas were more likely to be recruited through institutional linkages, but less likely to be recruited through interpersonal contacts than other female groups. Understanding successful recruitment strategies to achieve a diverse application pool for public health training programs is vital to achieve health equity.

Underrepresented Minority Students' Experiences at Baylor College of Dentistry: Perceptions of Cultural Climate and Reasons for Choosing to Attend

A study was conducted at Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry (TAMBCD) in fall 2011 to identify the reasons underrepresented minority (URM) students chose to attend TAMBCD, the factors that supported their success as enrolled students, and their perceptions of the institution's cultural climate. A survey distributed online to all URM students received a 79 percent response rate (129/164). The respondents were primarily Hispanic (62 percent Mexican American and other Hispanic) and African American (33 percent) and had attended a college pipeline program (53 percent). The top reasons these students chose TAMBCD were reputation, location, and automatic acceptance or familiarity from being in a predental program. Alumni had most influenced them to attend. Regarding support services, the largest percentage reported not using any (44 percent);personal advising and tutoring were reported to be the most commonly used. In terms of climate, discrimination was reported by 22 percent (n=29), mostly from classmates and clinical faculty. The majority (87 percent) reported their cultural competence program was "effective" and agreed that faculty (83 percent), staff (85 percent), and students (75 percent) were culturally competent. Overall, the students were "satisfied" with how they were treated (88 percent), their education (91 percent), and the services/resources (92 percent). This information is being used to continue to improve the school's cultural climate and to conduct a broader assessment of all students.

A METHOD FOR THE SYNTAX DIRECTED DESIGN OF MULTIprograms

A method of program design is reviewed which leads naturally to the expression of a program as a pipeline network of simple processes. Starting from the problem statement, the valid inputs and outputs are specified by grammars, and these can be combined to define the requisite translation. A notation for translation grammars is described informally, allowing a translation to take into account both semantic and syntatic information. Terminal symbols can be attributed to data types and can be qualified by Boolean expressions. The notation is capable of direct compilation, but it may also be used to derive a program in a conventional high-level language, such as Cobol or Pascal. Problems that are more complex are shown to be solvable by simple pipeline structures of simple translations. pipeline structure is well suited to concurrent execution on a multiprocessor, provided that nonbacktracking grammars are utilized to specify translations.

Meaningful Patient Care Experiences for Minority Graduate School Students

Background: Increasing numbers of underrepresented in medicine minority (URMM) physicians has garnered increased attention. pipeline programs aid this effort and are designed to expose learners to the healthcare experience and strengthen academic preparedness. This paper describes the clinical experiences of students who participated in a bridge to medical school Master's Degree pipeline program at a community based medical school. Methods: Using qualitative methodology, the authors sought to explore the clinical experiences of three cohorts of graduate school pipeline students on a path to medical school. Thirty six masters level students responded to an evaluation of opened-ended questions at the conclusion of their clinical preceptorship. The responses to three open-ended questions were analyzed via the constant comparison analysis method. Results: The total number of clinical encounters during the clinical preceptorship over the three-year period was 633, a total of 144 h. The most common diagnoses seen were related to cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Three primary themes were identified regarding students' experiences in the pipeline program: connecting academic and clinical skills, learning the needs of and how to advocate for underserved patients and the need to increase exposure to underserved patient populations across specialties in medicine. Conclusions: The clinical preceptorship linked academic knowledge with clinical skills and provided an avenue for learning about health disparities and patient advocacy for underserved patients. It also identified a need for increased exposure to underserved patient populations across medical specialties.

Recruitment of the Next Generation of Diverse Hand Surgeons

Hand surgery encompasses a diaspora of pathology and patients, but the surgeons treating this population are not commensurately diverse. A physician population that reflects the population it treats consistently leads to improved patient outcomes. Despite increasing diversity amongst surgeons entering into pipeline specialties such as General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Orthopaedic Surgery, the overall makeup of practicing hand surgeons remains largely homogenous. This article outlines organizations, such as the Perry Initiative, which have increased recruitment of women and underrepresented minorities into pipeline programs. Techniques of minimizing bias and increasing opportunities for underrepresented groups are also discussed.

The Careers in Health and Medical Professions Program (CHAMPS): An Impact Study of a University-Based STEM plus H Outreach Program

The present study investigated the impact of a Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Health (STEM+H) university-based pipeline program, the Careers in Health and Medical Professions Program, over the course of two summers among predominantly African-American high school students recruited from urban school districts (N = 155). Based on a mixed methods approach, results indicated that youth made significant gains in both academic and career knowledge. Furthermore, youth generally rated the program's sessions favorably, but also rated sessions with varying levels of satisfaction. The limitations and implications for program delivery and evaluation methods among pipeline programs are discussed.

pipeline program recruits and retains women and underrepresented minorities in procedure based specialties: A brief report

As the US population continues to grow in racial and ethnic diversity, we also continue to see healthcare disparities across racial lines. Considerable attention has been given to creating a physician workforce that better reflects the population served by healthcare professionals. To address the low numbers of women and underrepresented minorities in procedural based specialties, Nth Dimensions has sought to address and eliminate healthcare disparities through strategic pipeline initiatives. This is a retrospective observational cohort study of 118 medical students from 29 accredited US medical schools, who were awarded a position in the Nth Dimensions Summer Internship program between 2005 and 2012. Overall, 84 NDSI scholars applied and 81 matched into procedure-based specialties;therefore the overall retention rate was 75% and the overall match rate across the eight cohorts was 72.3%. Through intervention-based change, the authors hypothesize that greater numbers in the residency training cohorts can lead to a greater number of physicians with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Ultimately, this will enhance quality of care for all patients and improve decision making process that influence healthcare systems. Summary: Strategic pipeline programs increase successful recruit women and underrepresented minorities to apply and matriculate into procedure based residency programs. MEASURING THE SUCCESS OF A pipeline PROGRAM TO INCREASE NURSING WORKFORCE DIVERSITY

The purpose of this study was to understand changes in knowledge and opinions of underserved American Indian and Hispanic high school students after attending a 2-week summer pipeline program using and testing a pre/postsurvey. The research aims were to (a) psychometrically analyze the survey to determine if scale items could be summed to create a total scale score or subscale scores;(b) assess change in scores pre/postprogram;and (c) examine the survey to make suggestions for modifications and further testing to develop a valid tool to measure changes in student perceptions about going to college and nursing as a result of pipeline programs. Psychometric analysis indicated poor model fit for a I-factor model for the total scale and majority of subscales. Nonparametric tests indicated statistically significant increases in 13 items and decreases in 2 items. Therefore, while total scores or subscale scores cannot be used to assess changes in perceptions from pre- to postprogram, the survey can be used to examine changes over time in each item. Student did not have an accurate view of nursing and college and underestimated support needed to attend college. However students realized that nursing was a profession with autonomy, respect, and honor. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

ENGINEERED STRUGGLE AND "EARNED" SUCCESS Preparing Black and Latino Students to Attend Elite Boarding Schools

This paper examines how a nonprofit organization prepares low-income Black and Latino/a students to attend elite boarding high schools. Using ethnographic data, I investigate how the program engineers the experience of academic and emotional struggle for students, how students experience these struggles, and what students learn from this process. I find that the program's academically-induced emotional rollercoaster serves to strengthen students' confidence in their academic skills and their ability to persist in the face of academic challenges-a valuable emotional asset for the students as they enter elite boarding schools. However, I argue, the feeling students emerge with of having earned their successes (and failures) may ultimately serve to reproduce the individualistic, meritocratic discourses that support the patterns of social inequality the program helps its students sidestep.

The challenge of creating a more diverse economics: lessons from the UCR minority pipeline project

This paper reflects on the experience of the 1999-2002 minority pipeline program (MPP) at the University of California, Riverside. With support from the American Economic Association, the MPP identified students of color interested in economics, let them explore economic issues affecting minority communities, and encouraged them to consider postgraduate work in economics. The MPP's successes and failures can be traced to the shifting balance in California's racialized political economy, especially a state ballot initiative forbidding the use of applicant race or ethnicity in University of California admission decisions, and to the transformation of economics itself, especially at the level of doctoral training. The MPP experience may be of relevance for other efforts to increase racial/ethnic diversity in social science disciplines.
