With the broadening of the concept of Cultural Heritage - which now, in addition to great monuments, also includes urban cores, landscapes and intangible manifestations - the possibilities for heritage conservation actions have also expanded. Nowadays, in a globalised world immersed in technologies that are evolving with astonishing rapidity, precisely technological innovation can be an important ally for the enhancement of historic public spaces. On the occasion of the bicentenary of the placement of the existing obelisk in the "Largo da Memoria" public space (in the centre of Sao Paulo), a three-dimensional survey pilot project was carried out in cooperation with local municipality. One of the objectives of this project was to develop an example of "good practices" for the conservation of urban space and a possible benchmark for the use of digital data by local technicians avoiding expansive software and hardware solutions. Thus, the three-dimensional survey of the area helped to evaluate the effectiveness of the optimisation of the integrated procedure, taking into consideration the importance of the public space of the Largo, at the intersection of Xavier de Toledo and Quirino de Andrade streets. Technology transfer actions played an important role within the whole process, enabling further evaluations for the conservation of the place by local authorities.

The scale models of fortified towns belonging to the Plans-Reliefs collection are exceptional witnesses of the formation of the French territory. The aim of the URBANIA project is the valorisation and the diffusion of this heritage through the creation of virtual models. The town scale model of Strasbourg at 1: 600 currently exhibited in the Historical Museum of Strasbourg was selected as a case study. We develop and experiment an automatic procedure to identify and reconstruct military architecture works from pointcloud digitisation of this fragile and bulky heritage. A priori knowledge formalized in a domain ontology informs the identification of the works - via geometrical feature comparison and consistency evaluation within the fortification system morphology - and their parametric 3D reconstruction refined by direct fit to the initial pointcloud.

During the last decade, 3D integrated surveys and BIM modelling procedures have greatly improved the overall knowledge on some Brazilian Modernist buildings. In this framework, the Casa de Vidro 3D survey carried out by DIAPReM centre at Ferrara University, beside the important outputs, analysis and researches achieved from the pointcloud database processing, was also useful to test several awareness increasing activities in cooperation with local stakeholders. The first digital documentation test of the Casa de Vidro allowed verifying the feasibility of a full survey on the building towards the restoration and possible placement of new architectures into the garden as an archive-museum of the Lina Bo and P.M. Bardi Foundation. Later, full 3D integrated survey and diagnostic analysis were carried out to achieve the total digital documentation of the house sponsored by the Keeping it Modern initiative of Getty Foundation (Los Angeles). Following its characteristics, the survey had to take into consideration the different architectural features, up to the relationship of architecture and nature. These 3D documentation activities and the pointcloudprocessing allowed several analysis in a multidisciplinary framework.
