Near-infrared switch effect of polarization modulation induced by guided-mode resonance in dielectric grating

Light intensity modulation is crucial for the development of optical imaging, optical sensing, and optical switch. Light intensity modulation methods, such as changing structural parameters, external temperature, or external voltage, make the control process time consuming and complex. The plasmonic polarization modulation is an effective strategy to modulate the light intensity, but this method is limited by the excitation of surface plasmons with transverse magnetic (TM) polarized light. Herein, we report another polarization modulation method for light intensity based on guided mode resonance in a dielectric grating excited by transverse electric (TE) polarized light. The nanosystem comprises a Si grating and a TiN substrate. By adjusting the polarization states of the incident light from TE to TM, the proposed nanosystem exhibits an outstanding light intensity modulation performance with a relative modulation depth of 25833%. The presented method provides another way for modulating the light intensity, which has potential applications in optical switching, optical imaging, and optical anti-counterfeiting.

Research on polarization modulation of Electro-Optical Crystals for 3D Imaging Reconstruction

A method for enhancing the resolution of 3D imaging reconstruction by employing the polarization modulation of electro-optical crystals is proposed. This technique utilizes two polarizers oriented perpendicular to each other along with an electro-optical modulation crystal to achieve high repetition frequency and narrow pulse width gating. By varying the modulation time series of the electro-optical crystal, three-dimensional gray images of the laser at different distances are acquired, and the three-dimensional information of the target is reconstructed using the range energy recovery algorithm. This 3D imaging system can be implemented with large area detectors, independent of the an Intensified Charge-Coupled Device (ICCD) manufacturing process, resulting in improved lateral resolution. Experimental results demonstrate that when imaging a target at the distance of 20 m, the lateral resolution within the region of interest is 2560 x 2160, with a root mean square error of 3.2 cm.

In this treatise, we introduce a novel polarization modulation (PM) scheme, where we capitalize on the reconfigurable polarization antenna design for exploring the polarization domain degrees of freedom, thus boosting the system throughput. More specifically, we invoke the inherent properties of a dual polarized (DP) antenna for transmitting additional information carried by the axial ratio (AR) and tilt angle of elliptic polarization, in addition to the information streams transmitted over its vertical (V) and horizontal (H) components. Furthermore, we propose a special algorithm for generating an improved PM constellation tailored especially for wireless PM modulation. We also provide an analytical framework to compute the average bit error rate (ABER) of the PM system. Furthermore, we characterize both the discrete-input continuous-output memoryless channel (DCMC) capacity and the continuous-input continuous-output memoryless channel (CCMC) capacity as well as the upper and lower bounds of the CCMC capacity. The results show the superiority of our proposed PM system over conventional modulation schemes in terms of both higher throughput and lower BER. In particular, our simulation results indicate that the gain achieved by the proposed Q-dimensional PM scheme spans between 10dB and 20dB compared to the conventional modulation. It is also demonstrated that the PM system attains between 54% and 87.5% improvements in terms of ergodic capacity. Furthermore, we show that this technique can be applied to MIMO systems in a synergistic manner in order to achieve the target data rate target for 5G wireless systems with much less system resources (in terms of bandwidth and the number of antennas) compared to existing MIMO techniques.

Stable and Highly Efficient Free-Space Optical Wireless Communication System Based on polarization modulation and In-Fiber Diffraction

The performance of free-space optical data transmission is severely deteriorated by the fluctuation of optical signal intensity, which is resulted from the bias drift of electro-optical modulation devices. In order to improve the performance of free-space optical communication systems, a bias-drift avoiding, beam steered free-space optical wireless communication system is presented based on polarization modulation for the first time to the best of our knowledge. An in-fiber diffraction device based on a 45 degrees tilted fiber grating (TFG) serves simultaneously as an in-fiber polarizer, free-space light emitter, and beam steerer in the proposed communication system, which endows the proposed system with the merits of highly efficient, compact, stable and bias-drift free. The usage of 45 degrees TFG has three benefits: 1), it realizes polarization modulation preventing bias-drift due to its polarization sensitive feature;2), it enables stable and highly efficient in-fiber compact free-space light emitter;and 3) it accomplishes free-space beam steering due to its wavelength-depending diffraction characteristic. A 2.1 m free-space optical wireless data transmission has been demonstrated with a data rate of 4.8 Gbps per beam using 1.2 GHz bandwidth OFDM signals. This proposal prevents the bias drift issue and maintains high stability. Hence, it can be applied in some harsh situations and confidential data transmission fields.

A passively polarized holographic lithography system is proposed for fabricating highly uniform 2D crossed-array structures with periodic tunability and high throughput. The dielectric-film-based polarization modulation scheme is applied to an orthogonal two-axis Lloyd's mirror interferometer to guide the polarization modulation at the interfaces of the mirrors and simplify the exposure-system configuration for large-area fabrication. The proposed polarization-modulation system can fabricate stable large-area (30 mm x 30 mm) array structures with a wide period range from 742 to 1500 nm. Moreover, the established polarization-modulation model could be expanded with multiple dielectric films for attaining higher periodic tunability.

Multi-point optical fiber hydrogen detection system based on light polarization modulation

A hydrogen sensing system including 8 sensors based on light polarization modulation is developed and demonstrated for simultaneous multi-point hydrogen sensing with high sensitivity. Each sensor is composed of a polarizer, a polarization control, and a short segment of polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) coated with Pt-loaded WO3. Due to the exothermic reaction between hydrogen and WO3 with the help of catalyst Pt, the local temperature of PMF increases and the reflective spectrum of the sensor shift accordingly. The self-developed control system software achieves the sequential scanning and recording of the reflection spectra of each sensor by programable controlling a light switch, and then gives the measured hydrogen concentration of each channel in real-time according to the spectrum shift by using an automatic dip finding algorithm with Gaussian fitting. The experimental results show that the proposed type of sensor has ultra-high hydrogen sensitivity, with a maximum value of-20.22 nm/% (vol %);packaging with foam substrate helps to reduce the response time of the device;the hydrogen sensor is almost unaffected by environmental relative humidity. Moreover, the hydrogen sensing system is experimentally proved having good stability and repeatability.

polarization manipulation and beam splitting are pivotal for advancing integrated photonic systems, yet conventional devices face challenges in miniaturization and dynamic control. This study introduces a spin-sensitive H-symmetry reflective metasurface that synergizes geometric and propagation phase modulation through subwavelength meta-atom engineering, enabling full polarization decoupling, arbitrary beam deflection and independent intensity control across multiple deflection channels. By combining multi-beam systems and Jones matrix theory, we can achieve efficient conversion from incident circularly polarized (CP) waves to orthogonally oriented states. Numerical simulations validate the metasurface's capability to generate orthogonally polarized states under CP illumination, with dual-channel polarization conversion efficiencies exceeding 90% and triple-channel operation demonstrating programmable intensity ratios. This approach enables multifunctional metasurfaces platforms for reconfigurable radar and polarization-optimized imaging toward next-generation miniaturized photonic systems with enhanced integration.

In this paper,we propose a new fluorescence emission difference microscopy(FED)technique based on polarization *** electro-optical modulator(EOM)is used to switch the excitation beam between the horizontal and vertical polarization states at a high frequency,which leads to solid-and donut-shaped beams after spatial light *** on the fluorescent nanoparticles demonstrates that the proposed method can achieve~λ=4 spatial *** the proposed system,the dynamic imaging of subcellular structures in living cells over time is achieved.

In this paper, we simulate the polarization modulation of vector bisolitons at 1-mu m wavelength region in a polarization resolved optical fiber system. For the case of polarization-locked vector bisoliton, the change of projection angle and phase difference can result the change of time delay and peak intensity ratio of output vector bisolitons, respectively. While for the case of groupvelocity-locked vector bisoliton, vector bisolitons with multiple peaks/dips can be generated through changing projection angle, time delay and phase difference. Besides, the third pulse will appear when time delay reaches a specific value for both cases, which means pseudo-high- order vector solitons are generated. This work can provide beneficial conduct for relevant experiments about out-cavity polarization modulation of vector bisolitons.

Electro optic Tm:YAP/KLTN laser using polarization modulation

Electro-optic active Q switched Tm:YAP laser (1940 nm), utilizing a novel switching scheme is presented. The switching is done by a KLTN crystal operated slightly above the ferroelectric phase transition, cut in a trapezoidal shape for reducing acousto-optic oscillations. The novel switching scheme, exploits the emission cross section difference between the main axes in the Tm:YAP, and overcomes the residual oscillations effects even at high repetition rates. The laser exhibited stable operation yielding pulses of 0.95 mJ, and pulse duration of 24 ns at 5 kHz, and pulses of 1.76 mJ and pulse duration of 20 ns at 1 kHz. Increasing the pump diameter from 330 mu m to 420 mu m has increased the pulse energy at 1 kHz to 2.76 mJ.
