To improve the robustness of the polarization modulation (PM) technique applied in dual-polarized satellite systems, a zero-forcing aided demodulation (ZFAD) method is proposed to eliminate the impairment to the PM from the depolarization effect (DE). The DE elimination is traditionally dependent on the pre-compensation method, which is based on the channel state information (CSI). While the distance between communication partners in satellite systems is so long that the CSI can not be always updated in time at the transmitter side. Therefore, the pre-compensation methods may not perform well. In the ZFAD method, the CSI is estimated at the receiver side and the zero forcing matrix is constructed to process the received signal before demodulating the PM signal. In this way, the DE is eliminated. In addition, we derive the received signal-to-noise ratio expression of the PC and ZFAD methods with the statistical channel model for a better comparison. Theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate the ZFAD method can eliminate the DE effect effectively and achieve a better symbol error rate performance than the pre-compensation method.

We propose a polarization modulator (PolM) -based optical vector network analyzer (OVNA) with extended measurement bandwidth. The combined use of the PolM, a polarization controller (PC) and a polarizer performs phase-and-intensity hybrid modulation of optical signal with double-sideband (DSB) modulation. The ratio between phase and intensity modulations is controlled by the PC, leading to different modulation formats. The frequency response of a device-under-test (DUT) can be obtained by processing the results of two measurements under two arbitrarily different modulation formats. The significance of this work lies in that the measurement of a DUT with bandpass response can be simply achieved, which is a huge challenge for the conventional single-sideband (SSB)-based OVNAs. In addition, the measurement bandwidth is doubled compared with the conventional SSB-based OVNA. Moreover, the PolM-based OVNA can avoid the bias drifting problem using conventional Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM)-based scheme. The proposed method is theoretically and experimentally demonstrated. A proof-of-concept experiment is carried out and a DUT with bandpass response is successfully measured using the proposed scheme.

4 x 100-Gb/s PAM-4 FSO Transmission Based on polarization modulation and Direct Detection

For the first time, we experimentally demonstrate a 400-Gb/s ][4x100-Gb/s wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM)] pulse-amplitude-modulation-4 (PAM-4) transmission based on free space optics (FSO) utilizing the polarization modulation (PolM) and direct detection (DD) scheme. Each WDM channel comprises a polarization modulator, a polarizing beam splitter (PBS), and two photodetectors (PDs). Four wavelengths each carrying a 100-Gb/s PAM-4 signal (aggregate 400 Gb/s) are transmitted over the free space. At the receiver side, the PBS separates the two orthogonal polarizations, and then, the two polarized signals are detected by two PDs. Then, the two detected signals are combined by a subtractor, followed by digital signal processing (DSP). The PolM-DD system can achieve higher data rate while maintaining the required forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold compared with intensity modulation and direct detection (IM-DD) scheme. Moreover, owing to the stable polarization state in the free space and the mitigation of the common mode noise by the subtraction, the PolM-DD system provides enhanced tolerance to the amplitude fluctuations attributable to weather turbulence, which makes it more reliable than the conventional IM-DD FSO system. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of a 400-Gb/s FSO system using the PolM-DD scheme with the transmission distance of 1.2 m.

A series of Sn gratings in terahertz band is additive fabricated by femtosecond laser with a repetition rate of 50 MHz and central wavelength of 1040 nm. Different manufacturing parameters were applied to explore the relationship between linewidth and processing condition during the sintering of Sn power with 50 nm granularity. Furthermore, polarization modulation effect caused by Sn gratings are measured and evaluated by transmission experiment in a THZ-TDS system.

This investigation centers on the impact of antenna design on directional polarization modulation (PM) systems for increased wireless network security. Often, new PM methods are proposed without accounting for antenna effects, which unfortunately compromises the accuracy of their evaluation. polarization state is directly linked to the inherent physical structure of the antenna and its feed, so we propose benchmarks for comparing several aspects of the radiated polarization state from typical dual-polarized antennas. Applications wishing to relay information via polarization states should take these factors into account in order to achieve the true performance capabilities of the modulation technique.

A polarization MDCSK modulation Without PDL Over Multipath Rayleigh Fading Channels

Traditional polarization modulations suffer frompolarization dependent loss (PDL) which affects the the bit error rate (BER) performance. To solve this problem, a polarizationM-ary differential chaos shift keying (P-MDCSK) modulation is proposed rather than the conventional MDCSK in this paper. In the proposed scheme, the reference signals are transmitted with polarization states first, and then the information bearing signals are modulated by selecting both phase and polarization states. The union bound of BER expression of the proposed scheme is derived and verified by simulations over both additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and multipath Rayleigh fading channels. Results show that the BER performance of the proposed scheme is better than that of other corresponding traditional schemes with a low computational complexity.

Probing Spatiotemporal Stability of Optical Matter by polarization modulation

Light-driven self-organization of plasmonic nanoparticles via optical binding interactions offers a unique route to assemble mesoscale photonic clusters and chains. However, stability becomes an issue when more nanoparticles are added into the clusters and chains, since the theoretical optical binding strength is inhomogeneous and anisotropic in optical matter systems. Here we study the spatiotemporal stability of optical matter chains self organized by two to eight ultrauniform gold nanospheres in a linearly polarized optical line trap. Perturbations are introduced into the nanosphere chains by periodically switching the polarization to be either parallel or perpendicular to the orientation of the chains, where the spatial and temporal variation of optical binding strength has been revealed. In addition, we found that the average oscillation amplitude and stability of the particles can be tuned by the frequency of polarization modulation. These results demonstrate a new way to study and improve the stability of optical matter and provide a promising strategy in engineering optical forces at the mesoscale.

The utility of polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) in surface and in situ studies: new data processing and presentation approach

Infrared spectroscopy is a powerful non-destructive technique for the identification and quantification of organic molecules widely used in scientific studies. For many years, efforts have been made to adopt this technique for the in situ monitoring of reactions. From these efforts, polarization modulation infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) was developed three decades ago. Unfortunately, because of the complexity of data processing and interpretation, PM-IRRAS had been avoided in lieu of the single potential alteration infrared spectroscopy (SPAIRS) and subtractively normalized interfacial Fourier transform infrared (SNIFTIR). In this work, we present a new approach for PM-IRRAS data processing and presentation, which provides more insight into in situ and surface studies besides dramatically improving the S/N. In this new approach, we recommend three complementary methods of data treatment (eqn (7), (9) and (10)) as the new protocols for presenting PM-IRRAS data. These equations are robust in visualising the surface processes at the solid-liquid and solid-gas interphases. Eqn (7) contrasts the surface adsorbed species with respect to the isotropic background with or without the influence of the applied potential. Eqn (9) highlights the surface potential-driven changes between the sample and the reference spectra. Eqn (10) focuses on the bulkphase (solution/gas and surface species) potential-driven changes between the sample and the reference spectra, and hence it can be used to track the production of species, which desorb from the surface upon their formation. Examples of ethanol electro-oxidation reaction are provided as a test system for in situ studies and PVP deposited on glassy carbon for thin-film studies to illustrate the utility of the new PM-IRRAS data handling protocol, which is poised to improve the understanding of the chemistry and physics of surface processes.

The return flux from a sodium laser guide star suffers, at large angles between the geomagnetic field and the laser beam, from the reduction in optical pumping due to spin-precession of sodium atoms. This detrimental effect can be mitigated by modulating the circular polarization of a continuous-wave laser beam in resonance with the Larmor frequency of sodium atoms in the mesosphere. We present an investigation based on numerical modeling to evaluate the brightness enhancement of a laser guide star with polarization modulation of a continuous-wave laser beam at different observatories.

An optical fiber biosensor is demonstrated exploiting the detection of microfiber light polarization modulation. Microfiber is immersed in the magnetic fluid (MF) which contains carboxylated magnetic nanoparticles (CMNPs), without needing the modification of the microfiber surface. While, only an external magnetic field is utilized. Self-assembly of CMNPs is induced after adding bovine serum albumin (BSA) into the MF. The microfiber light polarization modulation relaxation time is prolonged, when external magnetic field is applied or removed for a given period of time. The concentration of BSA solution can be detected by detecting the maximum light polarization degree, or detecting the difference between the maximum and minimum polarization degree. The signal processing system of the biosensor is not only simple but also cost effective. Moreover, biomasses, such as virus, biotin, DNA, and phosphate compounds can also be detected using our scheme.
