Most of the matched filtering techniques that have been used for pattern recognition have manipulated amplitude and phase information. Light, however, has another principal type of information that has not yet been used for pattern recognition. mie propose a matched filtering technique which manipulates the polarization of light and shows the merits of using polarization information. The amplitude transmittance of input images is coded into the two-dimensional orientation distribution of linearly polarized light. A polarization spatial filter, which can change the light polarization two-dimensionally, is designed by considering the polarization distribution of the Fourier transform of an image to be detected which is polarization-coded. The proposed technique shows a better capacity to discriminate gray-scale images than do the conventional matched altering techniques.

The method is reported better capability to discriminate gray-level images. It has been formerly reported that we have implemented the polarization coding and polarization spatial filter using liquid crystal spatial light modulators with phase modulation and optical rotatory power. In recent years the use of bacteriorhodopsin (BR) as a holographic recording material has been studied intensively. BR films are sensitive to polarization because the BR is the photoinduced anisotropic material. In this paper, we propose the possibility of bacteriorhodopsin films for polarization spatial filter and investigate simplification of pattern detection system with polarization information.

The associative memory of the two-dimensional (2-D) Hopfield model described in terms of inner product is realized by using a multiimaging hybrid system and an incoherent correlation hybrid system, respectively. A new method, in which polarization coding and half wave plate are employed, is proposed to encode the bipolar data in memory masks. Four 8 x 8 images are used in our experiment, and the experimental results agree well with the numerical simulations. On the basis of this, we also present the inner-product expression of the modified Hopfield model for the heteroassociative memory which can be implemented in the same system described for autoassociation, as long as the first memory mask is changed and the thresholds in the feedback are adjusted accordingly.

An optoelectronic architecture is suggested to perform local cellular logic. A polarization coding technique along with the electronic substraction and thresholding techniques are developed to complete the operations with both positive and negative interconnections. Experimental results of the Laplacian operator for edge enhancement and their numerical simulations are given.
