Parameter setting effecting on solving efficiency is problematic and challenge of heuristic algorithm in engineering optimization. To reinforce the algorithm optimization, self-adaptation strategy of optical absorption coefficient based on dynamical spatial distribution of individual information is provided for parameter adjustment of polymorphic firefly algorithm. This method is utilized to test and calculate three different scale heat exchanger network examples in public literature. More economic networks of lower total annualized cost are obtained, and the three cases are all calculated in about 1 h, which shows the higher convergence efficiency of this method.
