Evaluation of dyslipidemia based on ATP III guideline in adults in Southwest Iran: a population-based study

Dyslipidemia is a primary risk factor for cardiovascular disease. This study aims to investigate the prevalence of dyslipidemia and its associated risk factors in the southwest region of Iran. This population-based cross-sectional study was conducted with 9846 participants aged 35 to 70 in southwest Iran. Data was collected on socioeconomic factors, demographic characteristics, comorbidities, laboratory tests, anthropometric measurements, and lifestyle variables. The criteria for dyslipidemia were based on the ATP III classification. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to control for potential confounders. Results showed that the overall prevalence of dyslipidemia was 43.5%, with abnormal levels of HDL, LDL, TC, and TG at 17.9, 21.8, 36.2, and 44%, respectively. The multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that males (OR 1.92, 95% CI 1.74-2.14), individuals with abnormal waist circumference (OR 1.88, 95% CI 1.67-2.12), those with low physical activity (OR 1.30, 95% CI 1.15-1.46), smokers (OR 1.17, 95% CI 1.05-1.31), rich people (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.04-1.36), and patients with hypertension (OR 1.16, 95% CI 1.05-1.27) had higher odds of dyslipidemia. Our findings suggest that dyslipidemia is a complex condition that is influenced by various biological and lifestyle factors. Different prevention and treatment strategies may be necessary for various population subgroups.

Association between polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons exposure and current asthma: a population-based study

Background Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmental contaminants that can cause a variety of health problems. This study sought to determine whether there was a relationship between PAHs and current asthma in adults. Methods This cross-sectional study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2016 and employed multifactor logistic regression, subgroup analyses, and smoothed curve fitting to examine the linear and nonlinear associations between PAHs and current asthma. Results A total of 8729 adult participants were included in the study. We found a linear positive association between current asthma and the six PAHs. In the fully adjusted model, log 3-Hydroxyfluorene, log 2-Hydroxyfluorene, and log 1-Hydroxypyrene remained significantly associated with current asthma. Subgroup analyses stratified by smoking status, gender, age, and body mass index (BMI) showed consistent associations between PAHs and current asthma, with some subgroups displaying stronger positive correlations. Specifically, positive correlations between log 1-Hydroxynaphthalene, log 3-Hydroxyfluorene, and log 2-Hydroxyfluorene with current asthma were independently significant in smokers. Among women, log 3-Hydroxyfluorene and log 2-Hydroxyfluorene were also significantly associated with current asthma. In participants with a BMI >= 30 kg/m(2), log 1-Hydroxynaphthalene, log 2-Hydroxynaphthalene, and log 1-Hydroxypyrene were significantly correlated with current asthma. For individuals aged 20-40 years, log 3-Hydroxyfluorene and log 1-Hydroxypyrene showed independent associations with current asthma, with age modifying the relationship between log 1-Hydroxypyrene and current asthma (p for interaction < 0.05), while p for interaction values in other subgroups were not statistically significant. Association between triglyceride glucose index and asthma exacerbation: A population-based study

Background: Metabolic dysfunction is associated with respiratory diseases, and the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index is an important indicator of metabolic dysfunction. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore the possible relationship between TyG and asthma exacerbation, while also investigating potential subgroup differences in this relationship. Methods: Data from the 2009-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included. Multifactorial logistic regression, subgroup analysis, smoothed curve fitting, and threshold effect analysis models were used to explore the relationship between TyG and asthma exacerbations. Results: A total of 964 participants were included in the analysis (34.13 % male, 65.87 % female, 45.4 % NonHispanic White, 25.3 % Non-Hispanic Black), with a mean age of 50.57 +/- 17.32 years. We found a nonlinear positive relationship between TyG and asthma exacerbation, which was maintained in all three models. In the fully adjusted model, the risk of asthma exacerbation increased by 25 % with each unit increase in the patient's TyG level (OR:1.25, 95 %CI: 1.21-1.30). Subgroup analysis showed significant associations between TyG and asthma exacerbations among females, as well as in individuals aged 20-59, body mass index (BMI) <25 or BMI >= 30. Furthermore, a U-shaped relationship between TyG and asthma exacerbation was identified in males using smoothed curve fitting, with an inflection point at the TyG level of 9.15. Conclusions: We found a nonlinear positive association between TyG and asthma exacerbation. Our study highlights the potential clinical value of TyG in managing asthma exacerbations, particularly emphasizing the need for gender-specific risk management strategies.

Surgically treated ankle fractures in Sweden: a 15-year population-based study of 96 015 surgeries

Background Ankle fractures are the third most common fractures, often requiring surgical intervention to restore function and mobility. Understanding trends in ankle fracture surgeries is essential for optimizing treatment strategies and improving patient outcomes. The aim of this study is to provide a comprehensive analysis of ankle fracture surgeries in Sweden in order to highlight changes in demography and trends in surgical procedures. Methods Utilizing data from the National Patient Register, we conducted an observational population-based study of ankle fracture surgeries performed in Sweden between 2008 and 2022. Patients aged 15 years and above who underwent ankle fracture surgery were included in the analysis. Surgical procedures were identified using NOMESCO codes specific to ankle fractures. Demographic trends, surgical procedures and incidence rates were analyzed using descriptive statistics, incidence calculations and regression analyses. Results Women accounted for 55% of surgeries (p = 0.022), with a significant proportion (47%) occurring in individuals aged 65 and above. Although the overall incidence of ankle surgeries decreased by 6% (p = 0.008), notable age-specific trends emerged, including a decrease in surgeries among younger adults and an increase among the elderly. Plate and screw fixation remained the most commonly employed surgical technique, with a 21% increase in usage (p < 0.001), while the use of external fixation and intramedullary nailing increased significantly by 123% and 69%, respectively (both p < 0.001). Conversely, the use of cerclage and/or pin fixation decreased by 74% (p < 0.001) over the study period. Conclusions Our study of open source data shows current trends in surgically treated ankle fractures in Sweden, highlighting a decreased incidence overall, notable shifts between age groups and several trends in surgical procedures. Background The choroid plexus (ChP) plays an important role in producing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and physical dysfunction has been associated with alterations in CSF circulation. However, no population-based studies have thus far examined the association of ChP with physical function in older people. Methods This population-based cross-sectional study included 1217 participants (age >= 60 years;57.35% women) in the MRI substudy of the Multimodal Interventions to delay Dementia and disability in rural China. ChP volume was automatically segmented using three-dimensional T1-weighted sequences. Physical function was assessed using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Data were analyzed using general linear regression and mediation models. ResultsControlling for demographic characteristics, cardiovascular risk factors, stroke, disproportionately enlarged subarachnoid-space hydrocephalus (DESH), and total intracranial volume, per 1-ml increase in ChP volume was associated with beta-coefficient of -0.24 (95% confidence interval: -0.37 to -0.11) for SPPB summary score, with the association being stronger in females (-0.40;-0.60 to -0.20) than in males (-0.17;-0.33 to -0.01) (p for ChP volumexsex interaction = 0.028). The associations were similar across three domains of balance, chair stand, and walking speed. In addition, enlarged ChP volume was associated with increased ventricular volume and white matter hyperintensity (WMH) volume. Mediation analysis suggested that lateral ventricular volume and periventricular WMH volume significantly mediated the association of ChP volume with the SPPB summary score, with the proportion of mediation being 54.22% and 14.48%, respectively. Conclusion Larger ChP volume is associated with poorer physical function in older adults, especially in women. The association is largely mediated by lateral ventricular and periventricular WMH volumes.

Association Between Systemic Immune-Inflammation Index and Stress Urinary Incontinence in Adult Women: A population-based study

Background: Systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) is a novel inflammatory marker, and inflammation may contribute significantly to the aetiology of stress urinary incontinence (SUI), in addition to recognized factors. This study aims to explore the association between SII and SUI in women. Methods: Adult participants from the 2007-2018 NHANES were included. Weighted multivariate logistic regression and subgroup analysis were conducted to determine the relationship between SII and SUI. The non-linear relationship between SII and SUI risk was evaluated using restricted cubic splines (RCS), and the inflection point was determined by two-piecewise logistic regression. Results: A total of 10,776 women were included, of whom 4407 (40.9%) had SUI. After adjusting for all confounders, a significant positive association between SII and SUI risk was observed (OR: 1.09;95% CI: 1.01-1.19, P = 0.021);Moreover, when compared with the women in the lowest SII tertile, those in the highest SII tertile had a 15% increased risk of SUI (OR: 1.15;95% CI: 1.00-1.31, P = 0.049). Subgroup analysis showed that there were consistent relationships between SII and SUI across most subgroups. A nonlinear relationship between log2SII and SUI was observed by RCS analysis. Furthermore, the two-piecewise logistic regression demonstrated that the odds of being SUI increased with the SII level, and this rising trend gradually slowed down after passing the inflection point of 8.64. Conclusion: Our findings suggest an association between elevated SII levels and an increased likelihood of SUI in women. Further well-designed prospective studies are needed to substantiate our results.

Background Management and outcomes in women with placenta accreta spectrum grade 3 are rarely reported from population-based studies. The objective of this study is to describe profiles, management, and outcomes, of women with placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) grade 3 from three multiperiod studies. Methods This analysis used data from three multiperiod population-based cohort studies from the United Kingdom (UK) (May 2010-April 2011), France (November 2013-October 2015), and Italy (September 2014-August 2016) to compare the management and outcomes of women with grade 3 PAS. The main outcome measures were postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) >= 3000 mL, blood transfusion >= 4 units, and other severe maternal complications (death, damage to bowel or urinary tract). Results This study included 39 women with PAS grade 3 in the UK, 51 in France, and 34 in Italy, a total of 124 women. PAS was suspected before birth in 59% of the UK cases, 88% in France, and 82% in Italy (P < .01). Conservative management was attempted only in the UK (38%) and in France (61%). PPH >= 3000 mL occurred in 54% of the UK women, 25% in France, and 12% in Italy (P < .01);67% in the UK, 47% in France, and 41% in Italy received blood transfusion >= 4 units (P = .06). The final (immediate and secondary) hysterectomy rate differed significantly between the three countries: 69% in the UK, 57% in France, 100% in Italy (P < .01). Conclusion Maternal outcomes in women with grade 3 PAS varied between the three periods and countries, alongside the evolution in prenatal screening and peri-operative management. Longitudinal Outcomes Among Patients With Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: A Canadian Retrospective population-based study

AimsThere are few long-term studies evaluating clinical outcomes and mortality among individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD);particularly using longitudinal health administrative claims data, reflecting populations managed in typical clinical practice. This study aimed to characterize DMD outcomes via a population-based *** with DMD, diagnosed between 01/1979 and 03/2020 at <= 10 years of age, were identified using the Manitoba population Research Data Repository housed at the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy. De-identified longitudinal administrative data from 1998 to 2020 were used to retrospectively assess frequencies and age at first observation of key DMD outcomes including scoliosis, cardiovascular-related complications, severe respiratory-related morbidities, and mortality. Survival analyses using Kaplan-Meier curves were used to describe attrition and estimate probability of patients remaining observation-free by *** study included 198 patients with median (IQR) follow-up of 9.6 (6.6-15.5) years. Corticosteroid use was observed in 26%, with a mean (SD) percentage of days covered of 31% (39%) from initiation to end of follow-up. Scoliosis observations were captured in 18% (median[IQR] age 12 [11-15] years at first observation), severe respiratory-related morbidities in 20% (14[6.5-18] years), and cardiovascular-related complications in 32% of the cohort (12.5[2-20.5] years). Mortality was observed in 14% of the cohort. Kaplan-Meier curves estimated 15% mortality by age 20 years and 20% by 25 *** a population-based data set with decades of follow-up, these data provide longitudinal observations of the substantial burden of DMD, and insight into contemporary estimates of mortality and treatment patterns in Canada.

Association of lipid accumulation products, or cardiometabolic index with asymptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis: A population-based study in Shandong, China

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the association of novel obesity indicators (lipid accumulation product [LAP] and cardiometabolic index [CMI]) with asymptomatic intracranial arterial stenosis (aICAS), particularly in different obesity statuses. Materials and methods: The study included 1994 participants (aged >= 40 years) from the Rose Asymptomatic Intracranial Artery Stenosis (RICAS) study, free of stroke or transient ischemic attack. Participants with aICAS were screened using transcranial Doppler ultrasound and diagnosed via magnetic resonance angiography. Multivariate logistic regression and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to explore the association of LAP or CMI with aICAS. Results: A total of 146 participants were diagnosed with aICAS. Higher levels of LAP and CMI were associated with aICAS, particularly with moderate-to-severe aICAS. Notably, LAP was significantly associated with aICAS (OR 1.58;95 % CI, 1.00-2.49;P = 0.048), and was showed the highest area under the curve (AUC, 0.654) among the three indicators (LAP, CMI, and BMI) in underweight and normal weight participants (Body mass index [BMI] <= 23.9 kg/m2). In the obesity population (BMI >= 28.0 kg/m2), CMI was significantly associated with aICAS (OR 1.40;95 % CI, 1.11-1.77;P = 0.005), and was showed the highest AUC (0.610). Conclusions: This study found a positive association between elevated levels of LAP or CMI and aICAS. Furthermore, LAP was significantly correlated with aICAS in underweight and normal weight individuals, while CMI was associated with aICAS in obesity individuals. Our findings may provide additional risk stratification information for aICAS.

Background Previous studies have yielded conflicting findings regarding the relationship between the use of sleep-related drugs (SRDU) and suicidal behaviors. This population-based study aimed to analyze the associations between SRDU and suicidal behaviors. Additionally, we examined the associations between SRDU and specific conditional suicidal behaviors, providing insights into the impact of SRDU on the progression of suicidal behaviors. Methods The study was conducted among community residents aged 18 and older using a cross-sectional design, analyzing 21,376 participants. Data on SRDU, suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts were collected. Participants were categorized into general individuals without suicidal behaviors (GNS), suicidal ideators without a plan or attempt (SINPA), suicidal ideators with a plan but no attempt (SIP), and individuals who attempted suicide (SA). Insomnia, sleep apnea, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder (RBD), and narcolepsy were assessed using the Athens Insomnia Scale, Berlin Questionnaire, Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder Questionnaire, and Ullanlinna Narcolepsy Scale, respectively. Results After adjusting for sociodemographic variables, insomnia, sleep apnea, RBD, and narcolepsy, SRDU showed a positive association with suicidal ideation (OR = 3.02), plans (OR = 4.78), and attempts (OR = 6.40;all p < 0.001). Compared to GNS, and after controlling for the same variables, SRDU was associated with SINPA (OR = 2.46), SIP (OR = 5.11), and SA (OR = 6.93;all p < 0.001) respectively. However, no significant differences in SRDU were found between SINPA, SIP, and SA (all p > 0.05). Conclusions This population-based study confirms that SRDU is positively associated with suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts, even after accounting for the risk factors of insomnia, sleep apnea, RBD, and narcolepsy. Nonetheless, SRDU does not appear to influence the progression from suicidal ideation to attempt.
