This paper focuses on multimedia positive computing, which is positive computing using multimedia data. Presenting a piece of multimedia data induces a person to have a mood corresponding to its impression. According to the impression transition of multimedia data, a person's mood is looking forward to being transitted. A transition method for the impression of multimedia data in the impression space has been proposed. This method decides intermediate impression points between the impression points corresponding to the initial and the destination moods for a gradual mood change. This paper revises the transition method. The revised method selects different impression points as many as possible. This enables a smoother transition in the impression space. The values of impression points and curvey transitions in the affective and impression spaces are also examined. © 2024 IEEE.

This research investigates the application of positive computing principles to Virtual Reality (VR) training scenarios where the Virtual Environment (VE) has not a direct influence on operator learning. We propose to place the 3D models of the only objects needed for the task in a VE consisting of 360 degrees panoramas of natural environments. We made a preliminary evaluation of the user experience which showed that the hedonic quality is significantly higher with this VE than a 3D modeled empty room. However, we also observed a reduction of the pragmatic quality, due to potential distractions. Thus, further research is needed to demonstrate the efficacy of our positive computing approach in training against a traditional one based on the faithful 3D reproduction of the real environment.

The use of mobile, wearable, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies fosters unique opportunities for designing novel intelligent positive computing services that address various health and well-being issues such as stress and depression. As positive computing research is often cross-disciplinary, it is difficult to acquire holistic perspectives on the design, implementation, and evaluation of intelligent positive computing systems with mobile, wearable, and IoT technologies. To bridge this gap, we propose a conceptual framework and review the key components to provide guidelines for intelligent positive computing systems research. We also present several practical service scenarios and provide useful insights on opportunities and challenges. By critically reflecting on the literature and scenarios, we suggest several research directions on the core topics in intelligent positive computing systems research. In addition, we discuss concerns and challenges such as technology dependence, abandonment, side effects, privacy, and ethical issues. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We review some existing multimodal systems for Public Speaking. We then present two versions of a multimodal system for Public Speaking based on positive computing. The system uses the Microsoft Kinect to detect voice, body pose, facial expressions and gestures. The system is a real-time system, which gives users feedback on their performance while they are rehearsing a speech. We discuss a study comparing two versions of the system. One version displays a live video-stream of the user. The other displays a computer-generated avatar, which represents the user's body movements and facial expressions. We discuss user reactions to both versions of the system and make recommendations for future multimodal systems for public speaking.

A multimodal positive computing system with real-time feedback for public speaking has been developed. The system uses the Microsoft Kinect to detect voice, body pose, facial expressions and gestures. The system is a real-time system, which gives users feedback on their performance while they are rehearsing a speech. In this study, we wished to compare this system with a traditional method for practising speaking, namely using a mirror. Ten participants practised a speech for sixty seconds using the system and using the mirror. They completed surveys on their experience after each practice session. Data about their performance was recorded while they were speaking. We found that participants found the system less stressful to use than using the mirror. Participants also reported that they were more motivated to use the system in future. We also found that the system made speakers more aware of their body pose, gaze direction and voice.

The system uses the Microsoft Kinect to detect voice, body pose, facial expressions and gestures. The system is a real-time system, which gives users feedback on their performance while they are rehearsing a speech. We wish to compare two versions of the system. One version displays a live video-stream of the user. The other displays a computer-generated avatar, which represents the user's body movements and facial expressions. Visual feedback is displayed on both versions in proximity to the speaking modality it relates to. In all other aspects, the two versions are identical. We found that users rated the video version of the system more distracting as they focussed on their physical appearance rather than their speaking performance when using it.

"Happiness Inventors": Informing positive computing Technologies Through Participatory Design With Children

Background: positive psychological interventions for children have typically focused on direct adaptations of interventions developed for adults. As the community moves toward designing positive computing technologies to support child well-being, it is important to use a more participatory process that directly engages children's voices. Objective: Our objectives were, through a participatory design study, to understand children's interpretations of positive psychology concepts, as well as their perspectives on technologies that are best suited to enhance their engagement with practice of well-being skills. Methods: We addressed these questions through a content analysis of 434 design ideas, 51 sketches, and 8 prototype and videos, which emerged from a 14-session cooperative inquiry study with 12 child "happiness inventors." The study was part of a summer learning camp held at the children's middle school, which focused on teaching the invention process, teaching well-being skills drawn from positive psychology and related areas (gratitude, mindfulness, and problem solving), and iterating design ideas for technologies to support these skills. Results: The children's ideas and prototypes revealed specific facets of how they interpreted gratitude (as thanking, being positive, and doing good things), mindfulness (as externally representing thought and emotions, controlling those thoughts and emotions, getting through unpleasant things, and avoiding forgetting something), and problem solving (as preventing bad decisions, seeking alternative solutions, and not dwelling on unproductive thoughts). This process also revealed that children emphasized particular technologies in their solutions. While desktop or laptop solutions were notably lacking, other ideas were roughly evenly distributed between mobile apps and embodied computing technologies (toys, wearables, etc). positive computing literature does not consider the complex implications stemming from the evidence of computing technologies' harmful effects. Moreover, present approaches to integrating well-being science into the design of interactive systems are built on deficit-oriented models. In response, a transversal, social constructionist paradigm of positive computing sensitive to the social complex and views technology as a part of civilization as a living, human construction is explored as a means of advancing the positive computing domain. The work argues the well-being of civilization needs to be routinely re-secured through the development of a metacognitive, affirmative competency that recognizes social systems as capable of creating their own realities. To effectuate the change, adoption of an integral awareness of the socio- technical complex and a new, positively oriented model of design for interactive computing technologies are proposed.

A multimodal system for public speaking with real time feedback has been developed using the Microsoft Kinect. The system has been developed within the paradigm of positive computing which focuses on designing for user wellbeing. The system detects body pose, facial expressions and voice. Visual feedback is displayed to users on their speaking performance in real time. Users can view statistics on their utilisation of speaking modalities. The system also has a mentor avatar which appears alongside the user avatar to facilitate user training. Autocue mode allows a user to practice with set text from a chosen speech.
