Efficiency assessment of switchgrass cultivation areas using sustainable indicators under epistemic uncertainty

This paper proposes a unified fuzzy data envelopment analysis model to address the optimization of switchgrass cultivation locations based on sustainable development indicators under epistemic uncertainty. In this study, each potential switchgrass cultivation location is considered as a decision making unit and a range-adjusted measure is utilized as a data envelopment analysis model for calculating the unified efficiency of each potential location for switchgrass cultivation and determining the most appropriate ones. By reason of the epistemic uncertainty associated with sustainable indicators, fuzzy set theory is incorporated in the proposed model. Inasmuch as the values of a number of indicators used in the model are in the form of possibility distributions, a new possibilistic programming approach is used for transforming the unified fuzzy data envelopment analysis model into an equivalent crisp one. The proposed model is verified and validated by comparing its results with those of the equivalent crisp one through performing a real case study in Iran at different levels of uncertainty. The computational results demonstrate the applicability of the proposed model in determining the appropriate locations for switchgrass cultivation based on sustainable development and under uncertainty.

An input relaxation measure of efficiency in fuzzy data envelopment analysis (FDEA)

While data envelopment analysis (DEA) models are very sensitive to possible data errors, in many real applications, the data of production processes cannot be precisely measured. Fuzzy DEA is a successful method that allows to deal with imprecise data in DEA. In this paper, we develop fuzzy version of the input relaxation model introduced in Jahahshahloo and Khodabakhshi [15] by using some ranking methods based on the comparison of alpha-cuts. The resulting auxiliary crisp problems can be solved by the usual DEA software. It is shown that, using a numerical example, how the proposed model become specially useful for detecting sensitive decision-making units.

Developing a novel quantitative framework for business continuity planning

Today's competitive and turbulent environment persuades every organisation to implement a business continuity management system (BCMS) for dealing with disruptive incidents such as earthquake, flood, and terrorist attacks. Within a BCMS, effective and efficient business continuity plans (BCPs) must be provided to ensure the continuity of organisation's key products. This study develops a novel approach to select the most appropriate BCPs which can meet the business continuity key measures. First, a risk assessment process is conducted to define the disruptive incidents for which the organisation should have suitable BCPs. Then, two different possibilistic programming models including hard and soft BCP selection models are developed to determine appropriate BCPs under epistemic uncertainty of input data. These models aim to maximise the resilience level of the organisation while minimising the establishment cost of selected BCPs.& Finally, a real case study is provided whose results demonstrate the applicability and usefulness of the proposed approach.

Designing and optimizing a sustainable supply chain network for a blood platelet bank under uncertainty

This paper develops a possibilistic optimization model for a multi-period and multi-objective sustainable blood supply chain with uncertain data due to an uncertain condition during a disaster and after it. The components considered in this study are donor groups, blood collection facilities, distribution centers, and hospitals as the demand points. The minimization of the total cost, environmental effects, in addition to the maximization of social effects are considered as the objectives to increase the efficiency of the network. Then epsilon-constraint method is utilized to transfer the multi-objective mathematical model to a mono objective one. In order to validate the proposed model, some test problems are investigated. For large-sized problems, a meta-heuristic algorithm, namely simulated annealing (SA) is provided for solving the model. Some numerical examples are solved and evaluated and the performance of the SA algorithm is compared with harmony search (HS) algorithm. Finally, the obtained results are discussed, and the conclusions are provided.

A possibilistic approach for designing hybrid cellular manufacturing systems

In this paper, a hybrid cellular manufacturing (HCM) system is presented in which the main sources of uncertainty, e.g. the demands of parts and unit costs are treated as fuzzy numbers in the form of possibilistic distributions. The basic concept of HCM is that high variation in demand might disturb cell efficiency, so forming cells with only those parts that have stable demand, will profit. Thus, to design stable and robust manufacturing cells, a two-phase method is proposed in which a fuzzy adaptive ranking method is first applied to identify those parts with low and non-repetitive demands (i.e. the special parts) which will then be assigned to a functional cell. Afterwards, an interactive possibilistic programming model is applied to cell formation of remaining regular parts while considering both part sequences and multiple routes. To show the capability and usefulness of the proposed method, an illustrative example is also provided. Finally, concluding remarks are reported.

Natural gas is one of the most important sources of energy for many of the industrial and residential users in the world. It has a complex and huge supply chain which is in need of heavy investments in all the stages of exploration, extraction, production, transportation, storage and distribution. The aim of this study is evaluation and optimization of natural gas supply chain using a multi-objective multi-period fuzzy linear programming model considering economic and environmental objectives. In the proposed model, to deal with uncertainty, the parameters of problem including demand, capacity and cost are considered as fuzzy parameters. To solve the problem, a combination of possibilistic programming approach based on previous approach is used to verify and validate the model. A small-sized problem was solved using GAMS 23.2 software and sensitivity analysis is conducted on its parameters. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that presents a multi-objective fuzzy linear programming model for optimization of natural gas supply chain through a greenhouse gas reduction approach. A case-oriented approach to a lead/acid battery closed-loop supply chain network design under risk and uncertainty

Anew scenario based stochastic and possibilistic mixed integer programming model for a multi-objective closed-loop supply chain network design problem by considering financial and collection risks is proposed. Uncertainties in the form of randomness and fuzziness are handled together for a better reflection of the problem. Different risk measures such as "variability index", "downside risk" and "conditional value at risk" are integrated within the proposed model. Particularly, for the downside risk measure, target/threshold values are considered as fuzzy and described by their own possibility distribution. The proposed hybrid model is applied to an illustrative example inspired by the lead/acid industry in Turkey. Computational results of applying the different risk measures suggest that using downside risk model with fuzzy targets is found to be an appropriate choice for the stated closed-loop supply chain network design problem in terms of "computational efficiency", "handling uncertainty" and "solution quality" (C) 2014 The Society of Manufacturing Engineers. possibilistic Stochastic Water Management Model for Agricultural Nonpoint Source Pollution

Agricultural activities are the main contributors of nonpoint source water pollution within agricultural systems. In this study, a possibilistic stochastic water management (PSWM) model is developed and applied to a case study of water quality management within an agricultural system in China. This study is a first application of hybrid possibilistic chance-constrained programming approach to nonpoint source water quality management problems within an agricultural system. Hybrid uncertainties with the synergy of fuzzy and stochastic implications are effectively characterized by the PSWM model with the following advantages: (1) it improves upon the existing possibilistic and chance-constrained programming methods through direct incorporation of fuzziness and randomness within a general optimization framework;(2) it will not lead to more complicated intermediate models and thus have lower computational requirements;(3) its solutions offer flexibility in interpreting the results and reflect the interactional effects of uncertain parameters on system conditions variations;and (4) it can help examine the risk of violating system constraints and the associated consequences. The results of the case study show useful information for feasible decision schemes of agricultural activities, including the trade-offs between economic and environmental considerations. Moreover, a strong desire to acquire high agricultural income will run into the risk of potentially violating the related water quality standards, while willingness to accept low agricultural income will increase the risk of potential system failure (violating system constraints). The results suggest that the developed approach is also applicable to many practical problems where hybrid uncertainties exist.

Designing the agile green sustainable multi-channel closed-loop supply chain with dependent demand to price and greenness under epistemic uncertainty

The increasing pressure and intensity of world competition in business environments, which is ever-changing, has doubled the necessity of proper reactions by industrial manufacturing organisations and companies. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel design of a closed-loop supply chain with multiple forms of product distribution and collection that aim to maximise profit and social responsibility while minimising delays in delivery and environmental pollution. The proposed model uses two indices, local employment and the number of jobs created, to show the performance of the function of social responsibility. Further, by mentioning pricing and greenness levels for the products in the paper, we formulate customer demands dependent on the price and greenness of the products. Also, RFID technology is considered for every vehicle to reduce time lags during transportation. Besides, the modelling is performed according to a possibilistic mean-absolute deviation approach due to the uncertain nature of some parameters. Eventually, the augmented epsilon-constraint method is utilised to solve and its validation. The results revealed that the proposed model could provide efficient decisions that can be a suitable tool for managers and experts, and it can have extensive application, particularly from a strategic perspective.

This paper deals with a portfolio selection problem with independently estimated possibilistic return rates. Under such a circumstance, a distributive investment has been regarded as a good solution in the traditional portfolio theory. However, the conventional possibilistic approach yields a concentrated investment solution.
