Quantitative analysis of dynamic gadolinium-DTPA (diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid) enhanced magnetic resonance, imaging (MRI) is emerging as a highly sensitive tool for detecting malignant breast tissue. Three-dimensional rapid imaging techniques, such as keyhole MRI, yield high temporal sampling rates to accurately track contrast enhancement and washout in lesions over the course of multiple volume acquisitions. Patient motion during the dynamic acquisitions is a limiting factor that degrades the image quality, particularly of subsequent subtraction images used to identify and quantitatively evaluate regions suggestive of malignancy. Keyhole imaging is particularly sensitive to motion since datasets acquired over an extended period are combined in k-space. In this study, motion is modeled as set of translations in each of the three orthogonal dimensions. The specific objective of the study is to develop and implement an algorithm to correct the consequent phase shifts in k-space data prior to offline keyhole reconstruction three-dimensional (3D) volume breast MR acquisitions. To enhance detection probability and to reduce false alarms, infrared imagery is pre-processed before subjecting it to detection algorithms in infrared search and track systems. Pre-processingalgorithms are used to predict the complex background and then to subtract the predicted background from the original image. The difference image is passed to the detection algorithm to further distinguish between the target and the background and/or noise more accurately. A number of pre-processingalgorithms have been reported in literature, with their relative advantages and disadvantages. This paper brings out the computational complexities and simulation results of various algorithms for assessing their relative performances. Based on these parameters, statistical algorithms in general and max-min algorithms in particular, are recommended to be used for infrared search and track systems.

In recent years, induction thermography has been proposed to detect and characterize shallow and open cracks on steel components. The specimen is inspected by an infrared camera that records the heating and cooling behavior after a short induced electrical current pulse. The presence of a crack changes the distribution of the induced eddy currents with a consequent more significant local heating around the region of interest than the related sound one. This work investigates the influence of the testing parameters with an experimental approach, considering the analysis of a ferromagnetic master specimen with imposed simulated open cracks of different depths. The influence of the relative position between the coil and simulated crack has been evaluated, considering both numerical and experimental results. Two different coils have been adopted to optimize the experimental tests in terms of inspection time and improve the signal-to-noise ratio. It has been demonstrated that the post-processing of the raw thermal data is necessary to have useful information about defect detection for a pulse duration of 10 ms with only 20 A. A linear relationship exists between the phase contrast and the nominal defect depth.
