This paper attempts to formalize the semantics of causal block diagrams, a language that is extensively used in the design of technical systems. The formalization is based on lambda calculus, and implemented in the declarative functional language Haskell. Specifically, the combination of discrete-time and continuous-time computations, hybrid dynamic systems, is concentrated on. It shows how in many cases this combination causes multi-rate computations and so transition semantics between the two types of computations are strictly necessary. A loose interpretation is shown to result in an implementation that is amenable to error.

In this work, a comparison of three estimators of the Hurst parameter is presented: the classical variance-based method and two new estimators based on an orthogonal decomposition (that can be achieved by aggregated series or by using Haar filters) and that use, respectively, a weighted and a non-weighted linear regression. These three estimators were applied to a set of synthetic fGN traces. The analyses showed that the variance method and the estimator that uses non-weighted linear regression underestimate the theoretical value of H, while the third estimator, decomposition-based, that uses a weighted linear regression, shows an excellent behavior. This estimator presented a bias nearer to zero and the lowest standard error when applied to fGN traces for lengths from 1024 to 1048576 samples. The presented decomposition can be extended to study the frequency information of the time series, by obtaining what we call Hurst spectrum, and to generate time series that comply the definitions of self-similar time series.

With the emergence of Grid technologies, the problem of scheduling tasks in heterogeneous systems has been arousing attention. Task scheduling is a NP-complete problem and it is more complicated under the Grid environment. To better use tremendous capabilities of Grid system, effective and efficient scheduling algorithms are needed. In this paper, we are presenting a new heuristic scheduling strategy for Independent tasks. The strategy is based on two traditional scheduling heuristics Min-Min and Max-Min. The strategy also considers the overall performance of machines to decide the scheduling sequence of tasks. We have evaluated our scheduling strategy within a grid simulator known as GridSim. We compared the results given by our strategy with the existing scheduling heuristics Min-Min and Max-Min and the results shows that our strategy outperforms in many cases than the existing ones.

power consumption is becoming a pressing issue in microprocessor design. Caches usually consume large part of the total power consumption of the chip. This paper introduces a novel low power cache architecture which is based on separating the in-coming cache data. Data is separated in two different banks: bank1 that mostly contains 1s data and bank0 that mostly contains 0s data. This separation in part reduces transistor switching activity inside the on-chip cache and hence dynamic power consumption. This papers shows up to 35% reduction for small sized cache of 1K and 9% for typical sized caches of 32K

One of the characteristics of the increasingly widespread use of object-oriented libraries and the resulting intensive use of inheritance is the proliferation of dependencies on abstract classes. Such classes defer the implementation of some features, and are typically used as a specification or design tool. However, since their features are not fully implemented, abstract classes cannot be instantiated, and thus pose challenges for execution-based testing strategies. This paper presents a structured approach that supports the testing of features in abstract classes. Core to the approach is a series of static analysis steps that build a comprehensive view of the inter-class dependencies in the system under test. We then leveraged this information to define a test order for the methods in an abstract class that minimizes the number of stubs required during testing, and clearly identifies the required functionality of these stubs. Our approach is based on a comprehensive taxonomy of object-oriented classes that provides a framework for our analysis. First we describe the algorithms to calculate the inter-class dependencies and the test-order that minimizes stub creation. Then we give an overview of our tool, AbstractTestJ that implements our approach by generating a test order for the methods in an abstract Java class. Finally, we harness this tool to provide an analysis of 12 substantial Java applications that demonstrates both the feasibility of our approach and the importance of this technique.

Bag-of-words representation has shown to be a powerful technique for image classification. In this paper, we propose a new approach to discover the discriminability of each visual word (image feature) in the codebook for each image category. A general linear model (GLM) is employed to construct new histograms of the images which are the basis for image classification. We also discuss the relations between our approach and boosting approaches and non-negative matrix factorization (NMF).

The exact probability density function (PDF) for mobile distance from its own base station is derived for computing the forward-link performance of a Rayleigh-faded direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS-CDMA) cellular system with power control. Comparison with the commonly used 'circular-cell approximation' shows that the approximation gives more than 42% of error in the calculation of the variance of the mobile distance for a typical power control exponent of 4. Results also show that the previous approximation could under-estimate the forward-link capacity by more than 30%. Additionally, this newly derived PDF can also be used for arbitrary regular cell shapes by substituting their respective parameters.
