Pedagogic coaching, providing personalized hints or assistance to learners as they need them, has long been identified as a promising approach for helping learners benefit from interacting with learning environments that rely on computers and networks. Although implementing coaching by reliance on intelligent tutors has proved too complex for widespread application, This work describes an approach to coaching that limits the context so that rule-based branching constructs simple enough for implementation with JavaScript, an object-based language that is built into all popular contemporary Web browsers. Learners receive immediate feedback about their work on complex, open-ended problems without direct intervention of the teacher.

A special class of multiplierless transforms for computing discrete cosine transform (DCT) is introduced. This algorithm is completely multiplierless to compute an N-point DCT using Ramanujan Number of order -1 and order-2. The algorithm requires evaluation of Cosine angles which are multiples of 2pi/N. If the transform size N is a Ramanujan Number and if 2pi/N cong 2 -a , then the cosine functions can be computed by shifts and adds employing Chebyshev type of recursion. In this paper, an analytical extension of the algorithm is made for 2-D Ramanujan DCT for image coding applications.

We have developed an expert system, called TERMINATOR, which proves the termination of computer programs written as a set of rewrite rules. In TERMINATOR, the knowledge of the proof techniques is represented by a class of partial orderings called path orderings. In particular, the system incorporates the new and powerful orderings called RPOES and KNSES, which are presented in this paper. The two orderings generalize the well-known RPO and KNS orderings with an idea of the extended status proposed in this paper, and can be successfully used to prove the termination of rewrite rules that can not be proved by the conventional knowledge.< >

This paper discusses real-time performance of a computer-controlled variable-speed constant-frequency (VSCF) power generating system that employs a dual-excited synchronous generator (DESG). Results from a proposed model of an unloaded DESG are qualitatively compared with real-time test results. Emphasis is given to the attributes of the control of the excitation of the DESG in the regulation of both the frequency and magnitude of the generated voltage when the DESG is operating at variable-speed.

With the deepening interaction between information network and physical network in power system, the reliability of modern power physical system and cyber system is inseparable. This paper based on IEC 61850 standard, it establishes a cyber-physical framework for distribution network. And the influence of cyber layer components on physical components is analyzed. This paper calculates the probability of different physical layer fault scenarios in the process of fault clearing. And it quantifies the coupling effect of cyber layer on physical layer. Taking the feeder system of distribution network as an example, and this paper calculates its reliability. The result shows that the fault of cyber layer components will expand the fault range of physical layer. And the switch communication link has the most significant influence on the distribution network.

The analysis of both performance and capacity of direct sequence CDMA in terrestrial cellular systems has been addressed in the technical literature. It has been suggested that CDMA be used as a multiple access method for satellite systems as well, in particular for multi-spot beam Low Earth Orbit Satellites (LEOS). One is tempted to argue that since CDMA works well on terrestrial links, it will nominally work as well on satellite links. However, because there are fundamental differences in the characteristics of the two channels, such as larger time delays from the mobile to the base station and smaller multipath delay spreads on the satellite channels, the performance of CDMA on satellite links cannot always be predicted accurately from its performance on terrestrial channels. In this paper, the authors analytically derive the performance of a CDMA system which operates over a low Earth orbiting satellite channel. They incorporate such effects as imperfect power control and dual order diversity to obtain the average probability of error of a single user.< >

We present a low cost wireless microsensor node architecture for distributed computation and sensing in massively distributed embedded systems. Our design focuses on the development of a versatile, low power device to facilitate experimentation and initial deployment of wireless microsensor nodes in deeply embedded systems. This paper provides the details of our architecture and introduces fine-grained node localization as an example application of distributed computation and wireless embedded sensing.

Unstructured peer-to-peer (P2P) networks have power-law topology, and the number of content requests also follows power-law distributions. These properties cause two problems: the high-load of high-degree peers and the quick deletion of rarely requested contents. We propose a new caching scheme that replaces the cache on the basis of the number of request messages per unit of time. It significantly reduces the load of high-degree peers and improves the hit rate. Moreover, we use a simulation to show the effectivity of our proposed method.

A new method for on-line voltage stability assessment based on power transmission paths is presented in the paper. A power system is decomposed into many power transmission paths. By defining the weak power draining buses incorporating the electrical distance information, the weak power transmission paths are determined. Through their two-bus equivalents, the voltage stability index of the power system is calculated. The voltage stability degree of the power system is assessed by voltage stability index incorporating reactive generation reserves. Simulation results of the New England test system demonstrate that the accuracy and speed of the proposed method satisfy the need of on-line voltage stability assessment

Electric utilities in the United States utilize various linear programming techniques to achieve optimal power flow. The authors extend one such technique of linear programming based optimization for optimal power flow. Constraints for the slack bus are introduced and all branch and link flows are taken into account. This automatically puts each bus in the same flow state, thereby optimizing the entire system. Results show that a 220 kV five-bus system convergence within one iteration was achieved with a considerable reduction in CPU time. The technique has been recommended to Florida power and Light Company's power System Control Division and has proved successful for a 15 bus system using real-time data.< >
