REDUCIBILITY AND EIGENVALUE SENSITIVITY FOR IDENTIFYING CRITICAL GENERATORS IN MULTIMACHINE power-SYSTEMS

A selection procedure to identify critical generators to be equipped with power system stabilizers is proposed. The selection is based on the sensitivity of critical eigenvalues to a parameter of the state coefficient matrix. Critical generators are identified by observing the sensitivities of the eigenvalues with respect to parameters which affect the damping of the machine rotor oscillation. These parameters are the diagonal elements of the coefficient matrix. Unlike other methods, the proposed method for calculating eigenvalue sensitivity does not require any eigenvectors. There are also no derivatives involved. One of the main advantages of this method is that it shows the dependence of eigenvalue sensitivity on power system structure; this may be helpful in reducing the size of the system. The effectiveness of the method is described through the application to a multi-machine power system dynamic model.< >

Recent years have seen many process plants replace hard desk operator interfaces with modern computer based VDU interfaces. Alarm systems have similarly undergone a transformation in their user interface. This article describes some of the developments within the UK coal-fired generating industry in moving to the new technology with specific reference to alarm display philosophy.

Method for classification of PQ events based on discrete Gabor transform with FIR window and T2FK-based SVM and its experimental verification

This paper aims to develop a new method for identification of power Quality (PQ) events based on Discrete Gabor Transform (DGT) with a Finite Impulse Response Window (FIR-DGT) and Type-2 Fuzzy Kernel-based Support Vector Machine (T2FK-SVM). The FIR-DGT extracted features from the input signals and the T2FK-SVM classified them. Using proper window function for DGT is essential. Iterated sine window was used as window function to extract the events' features. The iterated sine window's function is four times faster than the default window function of DGT. Kernel design is a main part of many Kernel-based methods such as SVM, so by using T2FK, the total accuracy of classification is enhanced. In the present work, use of this hybrid approach decreased the extracted features size, so the execution time and total required memory were optimized for the classification section. The simulation results revealed accurate classification and execution in the detection and classification of nine types of PQ events. The overall accuracy of the proposed method was comparable to other methods and the accuracy evaluated under noisy conditions. Hardware platform was developed for evaluating the proposed method based on ARM LPC 1768 microcontroller to assess accuracy of the method in real conditions.

A new approach to dynamic security assessment using trajectory sensitivities

The transient stability of power systems is investigated using a new analytical tool. Instead of computing the sensitivities of energy margins, trajectory sensitivity functions of the post-fault system with respect to parameters are computed. The goal is to find how sensitive the trajectories of each state are to variations in system parameters. When the system becomes more stressed, the state trajectories become more sensitive to variations in parameters. Thus these trajectory sensitivities can be used as a measure of system security. This concept is illustrated on the IEEE single- and seventeen-machine systems, and it is shown that dynamic sensitivity functions can also be applied to systems of differential-algebraic equations where the TEF method has limitations.

Deregulation and liberalisation of energy markets are spreading rapidly over the entire globe. This process is changing the business environment in all sectors of power companies: generation, transport, distribution and sales, with dramatic impact on the way the traditional utilities do business. Competition is placing pressure on utilities to cut their costs. Only companies that are really determined to go ahead and exploit their potential to the utmost will be successful in the long run. More intensive and efficient use of information systems is the key factor to success. It is evident that IT will play a major role for success in rapidly changing and strongly competitive markets. This article discusses the impact of deregulation on the IT solutions required to achieve this goal. As practical examples some applications and current developments at Siemens are used.

Wind speed estimation based on a novel multivariate Weibull distribution

Good practice in smart grids is networked sensors topologies which give the ability to fuse sensors to obtain a new feature based on sensors' complementarity. Moreover, to get a prediction based on other sensors, possibly in other areas, in case of sensor failure. This ability may be achieved by correlating sensor data based on their historical observations. This study addresses the problem of stochastic multivariate modelling within the framework of cyber-physical systems. Weibull distribution function (WDF) was found to be the best probability distribution function to fit wind variations. The main idea of this study is to propose a generalised multivariate stochastic model to describe the joint probability between multi-stochastic variables. A novel multivariate WDF for wind modelling is proposed to estimate wind speed in one location based on wind speed data on other location(s). The suggested approach is applied to three cases to demonstrate the efficacy of the developed technique. It is pointed out that this approach could be generalised for the multivariate WDF of wind modelling situations. Finally, it is shown that there are existing structures resemblances between the wind Weibull versus normal distribution models arising from the fact WDF reflects a natural phenomenon with some restrictions.

Joint energy allocation and multiuser scheduling in SWIPT systems with energy harvesting

The utilisation and transfer of renewable energy and grid energy in the downlink of multiuser communication systems is studied. In the considered multiuser system, the base station (BS) is powered by both harvested energy and grid. When the BS transmits data to one user terminal, other terminals can replenish energy opportunistically from received radio-frequency signals, which is called simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). The objective is to maximise the average throughput by multiuser scheduling and energy allocation utilising imperfect causal channel state information while satisfying the requirement for harvested energy and the average power constraint of the grid. With channel dynamics and energy arrival modelled as Markov processes, the authors characterise the problem as a Markov decision process (MDP). The standard reinforcement learning framework is considered as an effective solution to MDP. If the transition probability of MDP is known, the policy iteration (PI) algorithm is used to solve the problem;otherwise, the R-learning algorithm is adopted. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can improve the average throughput of the system and increase the energy harvested by idle user terminals compared with existing works. Also, R-learning can achieve performance close to the PI algorithm under the condition that the channel transition probability is unknown.

Decision making on the state of transformers based on insulation condition using AHP and TOPSIS methods

The evaluation and selection of state of transformers based on their mineral oil data are quite difficult. In this study, analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solutions (TOPSISs) are used as the multi-criteria decision support methodologies to provide a simple approach to rank transformers based on their mineral oil data and to help decision makers to identify the transformer, which is in the most critical state. AHP is exercised for both priority weight calculation and ranking of transformers. The AHP method is used for weight calculation, and then transformers are ranked using TOPSIS. Here, data of 69 in-service and 12 failed transformers in Tamil Nadu state in India is collected for assessment. From the results, transformers with good insulation condition are ranked at top, while the transformers are given lower ranks if they are found to have bad health. It is proved that decisions yielded by both methods are in agreement with reality.

Islanding detection and load shedding scheme for radial distribution systems integrated with dispersed generations

This study presents a novel islanding detection and optimal load shedding scheme for radial distribution systems integrated with dispersed generation (DG). A simple and effective passive islanding detection method is developed based on the phase-space technique and using a probabilistic neural network-based classifier. After the system detects unintentional islanding state, it utilises an optimal load shedding scheme to prevent system collapse due to load-generation mismatch and voltage instability encountered in the islanded part of the system. The optimal load shedding scheme is developed based on the backtracking search algorithm. Extensive tests conducted with the DigSilent power Factory((R)) software and MATLAB((R)) software on the IEEE 33-bus system with four DG units considering several scenarios of islanding condition were utilised to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed islanding detection method and the optimal load shedding scheme. The results showed that the proposed method can effectively detect the islanding events and stabilise the islanded part of the system with minimum load curtailment.
