Enhanced AoA Estimation and Localization Through Transmitter precoder design

We propose a novel algorithm to improve the accuracy in estimating the angle-of-arrival (AoA) when the MUSIC (MUltiple SIgnal Classification) algorithm is used. An optimal precoder, with the objective to minimize the estimation errors of the AoAs, is first derived. However, to compute the optimal precoder requires the channel side information at the transmitter (CSIT) exclusive of the receiver array, which cannot be separately estimated practically. A more practical precoder design approach, which leverages on the feedback CSIT estimated at the receiver, is next proposed. We demonstrate that the practical precoder performs closely to the optimal precoder through simulation, and both precoders exhibit considerable performance improvement compared with the AoA estimation without precoder. Furthermore, the precoder technique is applied to a known AoA-based localization method, and the improvement on the accuracy of the location estimate is studied.

We consider the problem of ESPRIT-oriented pre-coder design for beamspace angle-of-departure (AoD) estimation in downlink mmWave multiple-input single-output communications. Standard precoders (i.e., directional/sum beams) yield poor performance in AoD estimation, while Cramer-Rao bound-optimized precoders undermine the so-called shift invariance property (SIP) of ESPRIT. To tackle this issue, the problem of designing ESPRIT-oriented precoders is formulated to jointly optimize over the precoding matrix and the SIP-restoring matrix of ESPRIT. We develop an alternating optimization approach that updates these two matrices under unit-modulus constraints for analog beamforming architectures. Simulation results demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach while providing valuable insights on the beampatterns of the ESPRIT-oriented precoders.

A novel precoding scheme is proposed for MIMO multicasting systems, using the criterion of maximizing the minimal signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) among multiple data streams, while considering the minimum mean-squarederror decision feedback equalizer (MMSE-DFE) at each user side. We decompose the precoding matrix into a transformation matrix multiplied by a unitary matrix, and perform the design process within two steps. In the first step, the transformation matrix is obtained by solving a convex optimization and using Gaussian randomization. In the second one, the unitary matrix is iteratively optimized by decomposing the original multiple-stream problem into several simplified dual-stream sub-problems. At each iteration, the dual-stream sub-problem is converted into a real-valued optimization problem equivalently, which can be solved by an iterative approach based on the Lozano's algorithm. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme achieves better performance in terms of both achievable rate and symbol error rate than the other existing schemes.

Relays are used in the current standards to enhance the cell throughput and coverage. Often, the relays are evaluated without considering the overhead involved in providing the relay with the data prior to the transmission. In this paper, we evaluate the system performance by considering the duplexing loss with over-the-air transmission (OTA) for relay with decode and forward as the relaying protocol. We demonstrate that the benefit of relays can be even detrimental if the in-band signaling needs are not properly accounted for. We assume a single-cell system extended with a single multi-antenna relay station serving single-antenna terminals. The system design objective is to allocate the users between the networks nodes and design their precoders such that the total transmit power is minimized while satisfying given user rate constraints.

Affine precoding superimposes training signals on linearly precoded data. It enhances symbol recovery and effectively identifies the frequency-selective fading channel. Previous works have shown its advantage over the standard timemultiplexed training. This paper considers orthogonal affine precoding for joint channel estimation and symbol detection in wireless MIMO-OFDM systems. Analytical and numerical results confirm its ability to efficiently identify the unknown wireless channel as well as effectively recover the data symbols, while conserving the transmission bandwidth.

A new precoding scheme based on mutual information maximization for amplify-and-forward MIMO relay systems with considering the direct link is proposed. We study the mutual information of the system and set a total power constraint on the sum power of the source and the relay. The problem we formulate is too difficult to solve directly. By using properly designed precoder structure and the Hardamard inequality, we finally change the original problem into scalar form. We solve it in an iterative fashion and by employing the Karash-KuhnTucker conditions, we give out closed-form solutions to each iteration step. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed design method converges rapidly and significantly outperforms the existing methods.

A multi-static sensing-centric integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) network can take advantage of the cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output infrastructure to achieve remarkable diversity gains and reduced power consumption. While the conciliation of sensing and communication requirements is still a challenge, the privacy of the sensing information is a growing concern that should be seriously taken on the design of these systems to prevent other attacks. This paper tackles this issue by assessing the probability of an internal adversary to infer the target location information from the received signal by considering the design of transmit precoders that jointly optimizes the sensing and communication requirements in a multi-static-based cell-free ISAC network. Our results show that the multi-static setting facilitates a more precise estimation of the location of the target than the mono-static implementation. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we investigate the precoder design for MIMO multicasting, where two data streams are sent from the transmitter and the minimum mean-squared-error decision feedback equalizer is performed at all users. To improve the receiving quality of data streams, we focus on maximizing the minimal signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for all streams via precoding. Considering that the precoder is composed of a transformation matrix and a rotation matrix, we separate the precoder design into two stages. Firstly we calculate the transformation matrix under the criterion of maximizing the throughput of the multicast channel. Then, by deriving the relationship between the rotation matrix and the SINR, we transform the original problem into a real-valued optimization problem, and moreover, a Lozano's algorithm is proposed to compute the rotation matrix. In particular, for the special case of two users, a constructive method can be applied to directly calculate the rotation matrix. The simulation results show that the proposed design outperforms the existing ones in both the achievable rate and symbol error rate.

The spectrum sharing has recently passed into a mainstream Cognitive Radio (CR) strategy. We investigate the core issue in this strategy: interference mitigation at Primary Receiver (PR).We propose a linear precoder design which aims at alleviating the interference caused by Secondary User (SU) from the source for Orthogonal Space-Time Block Coding (OSTBC) based CR. We resort to Minimum Variance (MV) approach to contrive the precoding matrix at Secondary Transmitter (ST) in order to maximize the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) at Secondary Receiver (SR) on the premise that the orthogonality of OSTBC is kept, the interference introduced to Primary Link (PL) by Secondary Link (SL) is maintained under a tolerable level and the total transmitted power constraint at ST is satisfied. Moreover, the selection of polarization mode for SL is incorporated in the precoder design. In order to provide an analytic solution with low computational cost, we put forward an original precoder design algorithm which exploits an auxiliary variable to treat the optimization problem with a mixture of linear and quadratic constraints. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed precoder design enable SR to have an agreeable SNR on the prerequisite that the interference at PR is maintained below the threshold.

Lattice reduction (LR) has been used widely in conventional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems to enhance the performance. However, LR is hard to be applied to the relay systems which are important but more complicated in the wireless communication theory. This paper introduces a new viewpoint for utilizing LR in multiuser MIMO relay systems. The vector precoding (VP) is designed along with zero force (ZF) criterion and minimum mean square error (MMSE) criterion and enhanced by LR algorithm. This implementable precoder design combines nonlinear processing at the base station (BS) and linear processing at the relay. This precoder is capable of avoiding multiuser interference (MUI) at the mobile stations (MSs) and achieving excellent performance. Moreover, it is shown that the amount of feedback information is much less than that of the singular value decomposition (SVD) design. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme using the complex version of the Lenstra-Lenstra-Lovasz (LLL) algorithm significantly improves system performance.
