Downlink MU-MIMO With QoS Aware Transmission: precoder design and Performance Analysis

In this paper, a downlink wireless communication channel is considered. The base station (BS) has common data for all users, unicast data for a set of intended users, and transmits the superposition of these messages. This setting neither falls into the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) nor into the multi-group multicasting literatures. In NOMA systems, the BS has unicast data for all users, and multiple users share the same resources. In multi-group multicasting, there are non-overlapping groups, each demanding a different multicast message. This paper studies precoder design to achieve maximum weighted sum rate (WSR). It is first shown that the precoders designed for WSR maximization and weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) minimization are equivalent. Second, an iterative low complexity algorithm (named WMMSE), based on WMMSE transmit precoders and receivers, is proposed. Another low-complexity precoder, the phase aligned zero forcing (PAZF) precoder, is also introduced. The results show that both algorithms converge fast. The WMMSE algorithm outperforms both PAZF and the zero-forcing (ZF) precoder for all signal-to-noise ratio ranges. It offers better interference management and high coherent combining gains for common data while PAZF finds the optimal phase rotation on the ZF precoder, and increases coherent combining gains.

Multiobjective precoder design for Coexisting Wireless Energy Transfer and Information Transmission Systems

This paper studies the precoder design for coexisting wireless energy transfer (WET) and wireless information transmission (WIT) systems, where WET and WIT share the same spectrum band, and the cochannel interference generated by one system is regarded as useful rather than harmful resource for the other system. Specifically, we address the transmit covariance design from the multiple-objective optimization perspective in order to simultaneously maximize the total harvested energy of energy receivers in WET and the secrecy rate of information receiver in WIT. To deal with the challenging multiple-objective optimization problem (MOOP), we first find the Utopia point of the MOOP. Then, we transform the original MOOP into two different single-objective optimization problems (SOOPs) via the weighted sum and the weighted Tchebycheff approaches, respectively. The two SOOPs are, however, nonconvex and nonsmooth. We further develop two iterative algorithms to tackle them, respectively. For comparison, a distributed transmit covariance design based on the Nash equilibrium is also proposed. Simulation results are finally presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed designs and illustrate the tradeoff between the total harvested energy and the secrecy rate.

Joint User Scheduling, precoder design, and Transmit Direction Selection in MIMO TDD Small Cell Networks

New short-length single-direction frame structures are proposed for 5G time division duplex (TDD) systems, where the transmit direction [i. e., either downlink (DL) or uplink (UL)] can be independently chosen at each cell in every frame. Accordingly, high flexibility is provided to match the per-cell DL/UL traffic asymmetries and full exploitation of dynamic TDD is allowed. As a downside, interference management becomes crucial. In this regard, this paper proposes a procedure for dynamic TDD in dense multiple-input multiple-output small cell networks, where the transmit direction selected per small cell (SC) is dynamically optimized together with the user scheduling and transmit precoding. We focus on the maximization of a general utility function that takes into account the DL/UL traffic asymmetries of each user and the interference conditions in the network. Although the problem is non-convex, it is decomposed thanks to the interference-cost concept and then efficiently solved in parallel. Simulation results show gains in DL and UL average rates for different traffic asymmetries and SC/user densities as compared to existing dynamic TDD schemes thanks to the proposed joint optimization. The gains become more significant when there is high interference and limited number of antennas.

Iterative Source and Relay precoder design for Non-Regenerative MIMO Cognitive Relay Systems

The problem of joint precoder design for the source and relay nodes of a cooperative cognitive radio (CR) system is investigated. We consider a non-regenerative relaying secondary CR system with underlay spectrum sharing methodology with the primary users. Based on an expression for the achievable throughput of secondary system, we develop an optimization problem to maximize the throughput subject to power constraints at the secondary source and relay, and an interference power constraint at the primary due to secondary source and relay transmission. First, we derive the structure of each of the relay and source precoding matrices separately assuming the other is known. Then, we propose an iterative technique to jointly design the source and relay precoding matrices. The results are also extended to the case where the direct source-destination link is available. Through simulation, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach in improving the achievable throughput, and compare its performance with that of numerical optimization, source only precoding, relay only precoding, and a naive amplify-and-forward method.

In this paper, we investigate broad coverage precoder design for 3D massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems, where the base station (BS) is equipped with a uniform rectangular array (URA). We focus on the synchronization performance in the cell coverage. The flat fading channel model is formulated. The synchronization performance can be characterized by the missed detection (MD) probability. By considering the MD probability fairness in the cell, we formulate a criterion for the precoder design. Moreover, we consider the equal transmit power constraint on each antenna to efficiently utilize the power amplifier (PA) capacity of the BS. By using the manifold optimization framework, we design the precoder under the aforementioned criterion and constraint. Simulation results show that the fairness among all the users in this cell can be ensured. Compared with the precoders designed by half power beam-width (HPBW), the proposed scheme causes much less inter-cell interference and has a better synchronization performance.

Joint Source and Relay precoder design in Amplify-and-Forward MIMO Relay Systems with Direct Link

This paper investigates the precoder design problem in a two-hop amplify-and-forward multiple-input-multiple-output relay system. Many previous works on this problem are based on the minimum mean-square error criterion and the presence of a direct link between the source and the destination is ignored. In this paper, we propose a new method for joint source and relay precoder design based on maximizing the mutual information between the source and the destination, taking both the relay link and the direct link into account. In contrast to previous works, which consider the transmit power constraints of the source and the relay independently, we assume a total power constraint on the sum transmit power of the source and the relay instead to study also the optimal power distribution over the two nodes. A constrained optimization problem with respect to the unknown source precoder matrix and relay precoder matrix is then formulated, which is nonconvex and very difficult to solve directly. We propose a structural constraint on the precoders by analyzing the structure of the problem and referring to related works. With the proposed precoders' structure and by applying the Hadamard's inequality, the original problem is simplified from a matrix-valued problem to a scalar-valued one. However, the new scalar-valued problem is still nonconvex and we manage to convert it into two subproblems and solve it in an iterative fashion. By using the Karash-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions, we give out the closed-form solutions to the subprobelms. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed design method converges rapidly and significantly outperforms the existing methods.

This paper proposes a pair of new linear precoder designs to reduce the high computation complexity in the context of multi-input multi-output communications with finite-alphabet inputs. We initially develop a high-performance mutual information maximization scheme using closed cut-off rate expression, formulating a standard convex optimization problem for iterative precoder optimization. To address the computational challenges associated with a large number of the possible transmit symbol vectors, we leverage the convexity of the exponential function to simplify the objective function. This approach results in an efficient bound that depends only on the maximum and minimum terms. Consequently, the corresponding optimization problem requires only two auxiliary variables to optimize the precoder, significantly reducing the computational complexity. Finally, numerical simulation verifies the efficiency of our proposed mutual information maximization schemes in terms of performance-versus-computation tradeoff.

Linear precoder design for SWIPT in MIMO Broadcasting Systems With Discrete Input Signals: Manifold Optimization Approach

In this paper, we investigate the design of linear precoders for simultaneously wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) in a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) broadcasting system with discrete input signals. The considered system model consists of one base station (BS), one information receiver (IR), and one energy receiver (ER). The design objective is to maximize the input-output mutual information of the IR subject to the power constraint and the harvested energy requirement for the ER. We derive the structure of the optimal linear precoder by using manifold optimization, and propose an algorithm to find the optimal precoder. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve better performance than the time sharing scheme and the Gaussian optimal precoder when Gaussian inputs are replaced by discrete input signals.

Rate Splitting for Multi-Antenna Downlink: precoder design and Practical Implementation

Rate splitting (RS) is a potentially powerful and flexible technique for multi-antenna downlink transmission. In this paper, we address several technical challenges towards its practical implementation for beyond 5G systems. To this end, we focus on a single-cell system with a multi-antenna base station (BS) and K single-antenna receivers. We consider RS in its most general form with 2(K) - 1 streams, and joint decoding to fully exploit the potential of RS. First, we investigate the achievable rates under joint decoding and formulate the precoder design problems to maximize a general utility function, or to minimize the transmit power under pre-defined rate targets. Building upon the concave-convex procedure (CCCP), we propose precoder design algorithms for an arbitrary number of users. Our proposed algorithms approximate the intractable non-convex problems with a number of successively refined convex problems, and provably converge to stationary points of the original problems. Then, to reduce the decoding complexity, we consider the optimization of the precoder and the decoding order under successive decoding. Further, we propose a stream selection algorithm to reduce the number of precoded signals. With a reduced number of streams and successive decoding at the receivers, our proposed algorithm can even be implemented when the number of users is relatively large, whereas the complexity was previously considered as prohibitively high in the same setting. Finally, we propose a simple adaptation of our algorithms to account for the imperfection of the channel state information at the transmitter. Numerical results demonstrate that the general RS scheme provides a substantial performance gain as compared to state-of-the-art linear precoding schemes, especially with a moderately large number of users.

This paper presents a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme with group detection for uplink multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, for which an effective precoder design is developed. In the scheme, users are divided into groups in accordance with their locations for detection at the base station. The inter- and intra-group interferences are mitigated by successive interference cancellation (SIC) and transceivers, respectively. Based on a derived approximate signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) for using zero-forcing detection, an iterative power and beamforming update procedure is developed for obtaining the user precoders. The precoder design effectively mitigates the intra-group-inter-user correlation making the adopted approximate SINR represent the original SINR accurately. The proposed multi-group MIMO-NOMA scheme can work under more practical transmit-receive antenna configurations and is shown to outperform upon existing cluster-based MIMO-NOMA schemes in terms of total transmit power for various system configurations. The impact of SIC residuals on the multi-group MIMO-NOMA scheme is investigated. Feasibility conditions for the design under imperfect SIC based on the fractional cancellation error model are developed.
