Throughput optimisation for energy harvesting transmitter with partial instantaneous channel state information and finite-alphabet inputs

Wireless communication systems with energy harvester are attracting much attention due to their ability to improve the system operation time. Extensive research has been carried out on how to maximise the sum of mutual information over multiple time slots (i.e. the throughput). However, most research focuses on the energy harvesting transmitter with Gaussian inputs and single antenna. This study considers the throughput maximisation problem for an energy harvesting transmitter with causal energy constraint over multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels. Different from existing works, the authors consider the MIMO system with finite-alphabet inputs and partial instantaneous channel state information (CSI). Specifically, the transmitter knows the statistical CSI of the entire channel frame as well as the instantaneous CSI of current time slot. The precoder design in this scenario is an intractable optimisation problem with respect to multiple precoding matrices. The authors' analysis shows that this difficult precoding problem can be equivalently transformed into a set of scalar optimisation subproblems with respect to the transmit power. To solve these subproblems, an efficient algorithm based on the dynamic programming is proposed. The authors analyse the performance of the proposed algorithm, and simulation results validate its effectiveness.

Distributed cache-aware CoMP transmission scheme in dense small cell networks with limited backhaul

In the dense small cell networks, CoMP is an efficient way to improve transmission rate. Unfortunately, CoMP would increase the backhaul resource consumption, which is not trivial for the small cell networks with limited wireless backhaul. On the other hand, the small cell base stations can cache locally some files in advance to alleviate the payload on backhaul. In this paper, we study the effect of distributed caching and the limited backhaul resources on the design of CoMP, and propose a CoMP precoding design method, which can be performed in a distributed way. Our simulation results show that considering both backhaul and caching is important for designing the appropriate CoMP precoding, and our proposed method produces higher throughput than the existing CoMP precoding design scheme.

Adaptive DSL crosstalk precancellation design using low-rate feedback from end users

The performance of extensions of digital subscriber line to higher data rates (VDSL) is limited by the effects of crosstalk among the wires in a bundle. For the downstream, a precoder can compensate for this. Without knowledge of the crosstalk channel matrix, the problem is to compute a suitable precoder based on limited feedback from the receivers. In this letter, an adaptive precoder design algorithm is derived. The algorithm works on a per-tone basis and assumes that each receiver sends back the sign of the symbol error to the transmitter. The algorithm computes the precoder iteratively using this information, without the need to estimate the crosstalk channel as an intermediate step. The asymptotic and acquisition performance is verified by simulations.

Precoding and Selection for Coordinated Multipoint Transmission in Fronthaul-Constrained Cloud-RAN

A joint transmission point selection and precoding scheme is proposed herein to mitigate interference in a C-RAN system with distributed fronthaul-constrained transmission points. Two methods are proposed to deal with the original NP-hard problem. First, reformulation into convex form is done using an upper bound method, where tightness of the bound and its implication on system scenario are easy to establish. The second one uses successive convex approximation to approximate the nonconvex constraint and is shown to maximize spectral efficiency at the expense of higher computational complexity compared to the first approach. Numerical results will show the efficacy of the proposed approaches.

Outage Probability Oriented Secrecy Rate Optimization for Finite-Alphabet Inputs

This letter aims at investigating the secrecy outage probability (SOP) performance and formulating an associated precoder optimization problem to maximize the achievable secrecy rate (SR) for finite-alphabet inputs. As a passive eavesdropper is taken into account, we derive that: 1) the phase of the optimal precoder is orthogonal to that of the channel spanning from the transmitter to the intended receiver;2) the modulus of the optimal precoder vector also has a linear correlation to that of the mentioned channel. Benefited from these findings, the original optimization problem is simplified to one only related to a pair of scalars, which thus dramatically reduces the computational complexity. Our simulation results finally verify the effectiveness of the proposed precoder design scheme.

This paper presents a precoder design for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) uplink communications with a multi-group non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme. In this scheme, QR-decomposition-based detection is used to decode user signals of each group under imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). In the uplink, transmitted signals are encoded with the constellation of a symmetric quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), and SIC residual errors are generated from symbol demodulation. The statistics of the SIC errors are derived, with which expressions of approximate SIC-residual-power coefficient and signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) are developed. Consequently, the effect of the SIC errors can be explicitly addressed in the precoder design for minimizing the total transmit power subject to users' symbol error probability (SEP) constraints. A suboptimal design algorithm with efficient "logarithmic" golden-section search is developed. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the design criterion and algorithm, and validate the detection error analysis. Unlike the conventional fractional-SIC-error model that suffers from underestimation/overestimation of SIC errors and infeasibility, our SIC error model can provide accurate effect of the SIC errors in the SINR analysis and enable the proposed method to give design solutions to satisfy the SEP constraints.

Traffic Aware Resource Allocation Schemes for Multi-Cell MIMO-OFDM Systems

We consider a downlink multi-cell multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) interference broadcast channel (IBC) using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with multiple users contending for space-frequency resources in a given scheduling instant. The problem is to design precoders efficiently to minimize the number of backlogged packets queuing in the coordinating base stations (BSs). Conventionally, the queue weighted sum rate maximization (Q-WSRM) formulation with the number of backlogged packets as the corresponding weights is used to design the precoders. In contrast, we propose joint space-frequency resource allocation (JSFRA) formulation, in which the precoders are designed jointly across the space-frequency resources for all users by minimizing the total number of backlogged packets in each transmission instant, thereby performing user scheduling implicitly. Since the problem is nonconvex, we use the combination of successive convex approximation (SCA) and alternating optimization (AO) to handle nonconvex constraints in the JSFRA formulation. In the first method, we approximate the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) by convex relaxations, while in the second approach, the equivalence between the SINR and the mean squared error (MSE) is exploited. We then discuss the distributed approaches for the centralized algorithms using primal decomposition and alternating directions method of multipliers. Finally, we propose a more practical iterative precoder design by solving the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker expressions for the MSE reformulation that requires minimal information exchange for each update. Numerical results are used to compare the proposed algorithms to the existing solutions.

Linear Precoding for Relay Networks: A Perspective on Finite-Alphabet Inputs

This paper considers the precoder design for dualhop amplify-and-forward relay networks and formulates the design from the standpoint of finite-alphabet inputs. In particular, the mutual information is employed as the utility function, which, however, results in a nonlinear and nonconcave problem. This paper exploits the structure of the optimal precoder that maximizes the mutual information and develops a two-step algorithm based on convex optimization and optimization on the Stiefel manifold. By doing so, the proposed algorithm is insensitive to initial point selection and able to achieve a near global optimal precoder solution. Besides, it converges fast and offers high mutual information gain. These advantages are verified by numerical examples, which also show the large performance gain in mutual information also represents the large gain in the coded bit-error rate.

Transceiver design using linear precoding in a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output system with limited feedback

The authors investigate quantisation and feedback of channel state information in a multiuser (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system. Each user may receive multiple data streams. The authors design minimises the sum mean squared error (SMSE) while accounting for the imperfections in channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. This study makes three contributions: first, the authors provide an end-to-end SMSE transceiver design that incorporates receiver combining, feedback policy and transmit precoder design with channel uncertainty. This enables the proposed transceiver to outperform the previously derived limited feedback MU linear transceivers. Second, the authors remove dimensionality constraints on the MIMO system, for the scenario with multiple data streams per user, using a combination of maximum expected signal combining and minimum MSE receiver. This makes each user's feedback independent of the others and the resulting feedback overhead scales linearly with the number of data streams instead of the number of receiving antennas. Finally, the authors analyse the SMSE of the proposed algorithm at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and large number of transmit antennas. As an aside, the authors show analytically why the bit error rate, in the high SNR regime, increases if quantisation error is ignored.

A Dual-Functional Massive MIMO OFDM Communication and Radar Transmitter Architecture

In this study, a dual-functional radar and communication (RadCom) system architecture is proposed for application at base-stations (BSs), or access points (APs), for simultaneously communicating with multiple user equipments (UEs) and sensing the environment. Specifically, massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) communication and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM)-based MIMO radar are considered with the objective to jointly utilize channel diversity and interference. The BS consists of a mMIMO antenna array, and radar transmit and receive antennas. Employing OFDM waveforms for the radar allows the BS to perform channel state information (CSI) estimation for the mMIMO and radar antennas simultaneously. The acquired CSI is then exploited to predict the radar signals received by the UEs. While the radar transmits an OFDM waveform for detecting possible targets in range, the communication system beamforms to the UEs by taking into account the predicted radar interference. To further enhance the capacity of the communication system, an optimum radar waveform is designed. Moreover, the network capacity is mathematically analyzed and verified by simulations. The results show that the proposed RadCom can achieve higher capacity than conventional mMIMO systems by utilizing the radar interference while simultaneously detecting targets.
