Peptide-based vaccines, in which small peptides derived from target proteins (epitopes) are used to provoke an immune reaction, have attracted considerable attention recently as a potential means both of treating infectious diseases and promoting the destruction of cancerous cells by a patient's own immune system. With the availability of large sequence databases and computers fast enough for rapid processing of large numbers of peptides, computer aided design of peptide-based vaccines has emerged as a promising approach to screening among billions of possible immune-active peptides to find those likely to provoke an immune response to a particular cell type. In this paper, we describe the development of three novel classes of methods for the prediction of class I epitopes. Each one of the three classes of methods gives a specific set of insights into the epitope prediction problem. We present a quadratic programming approach that can be trained on quantitative as well as qualitative data. The second method uses linear programming to counteract the fact that our training data contains mostly positive examples. The third class of methods uses sequence profiles obtained by clustering known epitopes to score candidate peptides. By integrating these methods, using a simple voting heuristic, we achieve improved accuracy over the state of the art.

In industrial data analytics, one of the fundamental problems is to utilize the temporal correlation of the industrial data to make timely predictions in the production process, such as fault prediction and yield prediction. However, the traditional prediction models are fixed while the conditions of the machines have changed over time, thus making the errors of predictions increase with the lapse of time. In this paper, we propose a general data renewal model to deal with it. Combined with the similarity function and the loss function, the data renewal model estimates the time of updating the existing prediction model, and then updates it according to the evaluation function iteratively and adaptively. We have applied the data renewal model to two prediction algorithms. The experiments demonstrate that the data renewal model can effectively identify the changes of data, update and optimize the prediction model so as to improve the accuracy of prediction.

Indoor localization has recently attended an increase in interest due to the potential for a wide range of services. In this paper, indoor high-precision positioning and motion prediction algorithms are proposed by using light fidelity (LI-FI) system with angular diversity receiver (ADR). The positioning algorithm uses to estimate the location of an object in the room. Furthermore, the prediction algorithm applies to predict the motion of that object. The simulation results show that the average root mean squares error of the positioning algorithm is about 0.6 cm, and the standard deviation from 1.188 ×10 -8 to 0 cm. Meanwhile, the accuracy of the motion prediction reaches 89.5%.

The task of tracking an object becomes tedious when the object moves through a dynamic background and the camera also has a random motion. This type of problem has three main aspects - object detection, prediction of object motion and compensation of the camera motion. In this paper, we have developed three algorithms using three different object detection algorithms, namely background subtraction, template matching and Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF). Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) algorithm has been devised for the motion prediction of the moving object as well as to compensate for the camera movement. The proposed algorithms have been validated through extensive simulations performed on several video datasets and an analytical study has also been presented. Through the simulation results, performance of the proposed algorithms are compared.

Traditionally, performance has been the most important metrics when evaluating a system. However, in the last decades industry and academia have been paying increasing attention to another metric to evaluate servers: availability. A web server may serve many users when running, but if it is out of service too much time, it becomes useless and expensive. The industry has adopted several techniques to improve system availability, yet crashes still happen. In this paper, we propose a new framework to predict time-to-failure when the system is suffering transient failures that consume resources randomly. We study which machine learning algorithms build a more accurate model of the behavior of the anomaly system, and focus on Linear Regression and Decision Tree algorithms. Our preliminary results show that M5P (a Decision Tree algorithm) is the best option to model the behavior of the system under the random injection of memory leaks.

We adapt the classic sequential model used to predict the performance of communications on parallel computers to a local area network using PVM. We have discovered that the linear model using the values of the parameters (latency, transfer rate) given by the "ping-pong" algorithm does not predict correctly the times invested in several communication patterns. This work concentrates in one of these patterns: One to All communications. We propose an alternative experiment that takes into account the overlapping between computations and communications that arises for this pattern. We illustrate the problem and its solution using a parallel matrix multiplication algorithm based on the master-slave paradigm. The detection of this phenomenon and the determination of the new values far the parameters simplify the design of parallel algorithms and can be used to predict the appropriate number of processors to achieve maximum efficiency.

This work evaluates cache algorithms for block devices in terms of hit rate for different replacement and prediction algorithms, and also focuses on choosing suitable replacement and prediction strategies to be implemented in a storage array caching solution employing solid-state drives. As case study, a real workload was continuously collected from web proxy server network. Such replacement and prediction algorithms were evaluated in detail and compared between them considering traced SCSI commands collected from Linux kernel. Comparison results for replacement algorithms LRU, CLOCK, LRFU and LRU-WAR applied to real workload indicates that LRU obtained good results in the majority of the cases. GHB and ReadAhead prefetching algorithms also were integrated and improvements of about 5.5% were achieved when ReadAhead was used.

In this work, we consider the problem of Model Predictive Control (MPC). This approach to controlling dynamical systems requires the solution of a finite horizon dynamic program. Especially when the horizon is large, a limitation of this approach is its computational burden since the solutions need to be computed in real-time between control actions. This restricts the applicability of MPC to systems that have large time constants and/or high computational power. To overcome these limitations, we propose a prediction-correction approach that exhibits quadratic convergence thus allowing to compute an approximate solution of the MPC problem efficiently. Numerical examples where we consider a highly nonlinear system support the theoretical conclusions.

In many specialties related to computer vision, such as video processing for object inspection, microscopy or video surveillance, a performance requirement arises, the choice of hardware architecture that sized well is crucial for experts in image processing. However, these experts are not always expert in hardware architecture and are not always able to estimate a priori the performance of their algorithms on a given architecture. Here, we propose the first elements of a tool that will be able to predict the performance, in term of time, of a given vision algorithm. Convolution is studied as an unavoidable algorithm in computer vision. We designed some benchmarks where different parameters related to the convolution where studied: size of the filter, size of the image, parallelism. Our results showed that it is possible with a correct accuracy to obtain a prediction of the timing of the convolution with three different architectures with a limited number of parameters. In future work, other algorithmic building blocks will be tested to validate our approach on a complex algorithm that will be a combination of identified building blocks. We want to propose an algorithmic language for image processing that applies to hardware performance.
