In-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) imbalance is one of the most important hardware impairments in communication systems. It arises in the analog parts of direct conversion radio frequency (RF) transceivers and can cause large performance losses. In this paper, the impact of I/Q imbalance on the sum rate performance of downlink massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems is analyzed and I/Q imbalance aware widely-linear precoding is considered. The proposed precoder is a widely-linear (WL) extension of the regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoder and jointly mitigates multi-user interference and I/Q imbalance by processing the real and the imaginary parts of the transmit signal separately. Results from random matrix theory are used to derive analytical expressions for the achievable sum rate of the proposed precoder. Our analytical results show that if the number of base station antennas is much larger than the number of users, the proposed I/Q imbalance aware WL-RZF precoder achieves the same sum rate as the RZF precoder in an ideal system without I/Q imbalance. We also provide an analytical expression for the sum rate loss of the I/Q imbalance unaware RZF precoder compared to the ideal case without I/Q imbalance.

In this paper, we study multi-user multi-input-multioutput (MU-MIMO) wireless system for spectrum sharing over a limited bandwidth, in which transmit covariance matrices of the coexisting users independently updated in an iterative manner for individual rate maximization. This problem was solved in the literature by an advanced decoding method, in which every user opportunistically cancels the co-channel interference from the coexisting users using multiuser detection techniques, hence termed opportunistic multiuser detection (OMD). This paper also studies the signal-to-leakage-plus-noise ratio (SLNR) based precoding for MU-MIMO channels based on OMD. SLNR improves as interference mitigates due to use of precoding in OMD. Simulation results show the achievable throughput gains of precoded OMD over the conventional single-user decoding (SUD) and plain OMD.

MIMO precoding matches the transmission to channel conditions in order to reduce or eliminate interference at the receiver. In this paper, we are interested in the case where the receiver is also equipped with a linear processor, specifically a ZF filter. We analyze the effect of the ZF receive filter on the performance of a variety of MIMO precoders. It is shown that receive-side ZF equalization can remove the error floors that sometimes appear with regularized zero-forcing precoding and matched-filter precoding.

We identify a practical vector quantizer design problem where any fixed-length quantizer (FLQ) yields non-zero distortion at any finite rate, while there is a variable-length quantizer (VLQ) that can achieve zero distortion with arbitrarily low rate. The problem arises in a t x 1 multiple-antenna fading channel where we would like to minimize the channel outage probability by employing beamforming via quantized channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). It is well-known that in such a scenario, finite-rate FLQs cannot achieve the full-CSIT (zero distortion) outage performance. We construct VLQs that can achieve the full-CSIT performance with finite rate. In particular, with P denoting the power constraint of the transmitter, we show that the necessary and sufficient VLQ rate that guarantees the full-CSIT performance is Theta(1/P). We also discuss several extensions (e g. to precoding) of this result.

Methods for object-based compression and composition of natural and synthetic video content are currently emerging in standards such as MPEG-4 and VRML. This paper describes navel techniques for compression of 2-D triangular mesh geometry and motion, enabling efficient representation and manipulation of video content. Specifically, mesh geometry is compressed by predictive coding of mesh node locations. Mesh node motion vectors are compressed by predictive techniques as well. Preliminary results show that the mesh data can be coded at a fraction of the bits used to code a typical video object.

Chunked codes are a variation of random linear network codes with low computational complexities. In chunked codes, the packets in a file are grouped into small (non-overlapped or overlapped) chunks, and random linear encoding operations are performed within each chunk. Previous studies show that when the chunk size is lower bounded by some increasing function of the file length, chunked codes asymptotically achieve the min-cut capacity. However, in most real applications, the chunk size is required to be a small constant due to the computational constraints of network devices. In this case, it remains unknown which rates can be achieved by chunked codes. In this paper, we address the analysis and design of chunked codes with fixed constant chunk sizes. We first highlight the importance of precoding for chunked codes to achieve constant rates, and then present an analysis of non-overlapped chunked (NOC) codes with precoding. We further introduce a new class of chunked codes, called EOC codes, which are based on expander graphs to form overlapped chunks. Numerical and simulation results show that EOC codes achieve significantly higher rates than NOC codes, and also outperform other state-of-the-art overlapped chunked codes.

In this paper we consider simplified greedy user scheduling algorithms for clustered network multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with successive zero-forcing (SZF) precoding. The optimal user scheduling involves an exhaustive search, which is very complex. Among various suboptimal but lower complexity algorithms, greedy algorithms with heuristic scheduling metrics have been shown to achieve performance close to the exhaustive search. In this paper, we propose two simplified algorithms: interference-aware greedy user scheduling (IA-GUS) and interference-whitening greedy user scheduling (IW-GUS). IA-GUS schedules the users based on the information on interference power of the selected users in surrounding cooperating clusters, and IW-GUS schedules the users based on the information on whitened channels of all users requesting the service in the cluster. IA-GUS has lower complexity and performs better than IW-GUS. Simplified metrics for proportionally fair (PF) scheduling are also proposed. Performance of the proposed algorithms is analyzed and compared with dirty paper coding (DPC), block diagonalization (BD) and systems without network coordination. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms for SZF achieve much higher outage capacity compared to BD with previously proposed algorithms.

This paper investigates the application of Key-based Physical Layer Security to future 5G and IoT network dimensioning, not previously considered in other works. Results indicate a Key bit Error Rate of 1% at a cell separation of 500m with a reuse of 7. A derivation for a closed form expression of the Key bit Error Rate as a function of radio network parameters is presented for a specific Precoder Matrix Index (PMI) based Physical Layer Security scheme known as MOPRO. The equation, which accounts for Rayleigh fading environments, is verified against simulated data, and shows a gain of 6dB for 1-bit codebooks over 2-bit codebooks. Also shown is a closed form statistical expression for the probability density function of the Key bit Error Rate. The expression for direct computation of Key bit Error Rate statistics points the way forward toward future physical layer security based planning in heterogeneous networks.

This paper presents a correlation reduction pre-coding scheme for joint decoding in an overloaded multiple input multiple output (MIMO)-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system. In the overloaded MIMO system, the number of receive antenna elements is less than that of transmit antenna elements. Through joint maximum likelihood (ML) decoding a frequency diversity suppresses the BER degradation owing to the spatial multiplexing of signal streams. On a Rician channel, the correlation among the coded symbols deteriorates the performance of the joint ML decoding. Thus, this paper proposes the precoding scheme that reduces the correlation on the Rician channel. Numerical results obtained through computer simulation show that the proposed scheme improves the BER by a factor of 1/10 on the Rician channel with the Rician factor of 10.

In this paper, we study the interdependency between leakage reduction and transmit power control for rate maximization in leakage based precoding (LBP) for a multi user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) scenario. We propose a LBP scheme which provides the rate optimal precoding for each MIMO link under a joint leakage and transmit power constraint and derive an iterative closed form solution for it. Depending on the constraints and the strength of the leakage power, the leakage power and/or the transmit power needs to be adjusted. Any leakage level between the egoistic case, where the leakage is not reduced at all, and the altruistic case, where the leakage is minimized, can be achieved. This allows to optimize the network performance in a MU-MIMO setup by optimally choosing the trade-off between leakage power and transmit power constraints. Using numerical simulations, we show the interdependency between the leakage power and the transmit power and demonstrate the gain we can achieve with the optimal trade-off.
