In this paper, we consider K-user multiple-input single-output interference channels with a cognitive relay. Assuming that data of all transmitters and channel state information are known at the cognitive relay, we design a linear precoder for the cognitive relay with the aim of maximizing the sum-rate without changing the transmitter operations at all transmitters. We first define the receiver set as a set which contains a part of receivers, and then present a performance metric called "partial signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio" (PSINR) based on the receiver set. Then, we can obtain a precoder at the cognitive relay by solving the PSINR maximization problem. The optimal receiver set which yields the maximum sum-rate can be identified by checking all possible receiver sets. Since this exhaustive search has prohibitive complexity, we introduce a greedy set search method and finally propose a precoder design scheme by combining the PSINR maximization problem and the greedy set search method. Numerical simulation results confirm that the proposed scheme shows performance close to the projected gradient method with reduced complexity.

In this paper, a novel differential precoding scheme which employs a differential codebook to update the precoding matrices, is proposed for LTE systems. Due to the temporal correlation of the adjacent channel matrices, the consecutive precoding matrices are likely to be similar. This approach quantizes only the differential information of the channel instead of the whole channel subspace, which virtually increases the codebook size to realize more accurate quantization of the channel. Moreover, the proposed precoding utilizes only 8-PSK constellations for codebook design so that it is perfectly compatible with LTE codebooks. The capacity of the proposed codebook performs almost 1.5 dB better than those of any other non-differential codebooks with the same amount of feedback information.

Cooperative precoding techniques in MIMO interference channels (ICs) such as interference alignment (IA) overcome interference, create noise-limited ICs, and achieve a linear rate scaling at high signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Alternatively, interference is overcome with the simple deployment of large transmit arrays, as interference becomes negligible by the law of large numbers. In such a case, "selfish" precoding techniques such as maximum ratio transmission (MRT) constitute a good solution. We investigate how many transmit antennas are needed for MRT to emulate the performance of a noiselimited system, i.e., to perform similarly to a system where transmitters have a fixed number of antennas and employ the IA strategy. Assuming a time-division-duplex mode, we calculate the training overheads associated with channel state information acquisition for each precoding type, and include these in the spectral efficiency calculations. We use existing analytical rate expressions for IA and MRT. The rate and overhead analysis allows finding the required number of antennas in closed-form, which varies significantly according to the SNR and coherence interval length. Results for different scenarios and practical SNRs show that transmitters with few dozens of antennas at most using MRT perform similarly to transmitters with four antennas using IA. The main findings of this paper are that the simple MRT strategy does not require massive configurations to emulate the performance of noise-limited systems.

In this paper, we investigate the secrecy performance of matched-filter (MF) and zero-forcing (ZF) precoding in a multiuser massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with a multi-antenna passive eavesdropper. For the two precoding schemes, we find that the equivalent wiretap channels are similar and thus the eavesdropper achieves the approximate same sum-rate. Closed-form expressions of ergodic secrecy sum-rate (ESSR) are derived for the both schemes in the low and high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes. We show that a positive ESSR of MF scheme may be not achieved when the BS simultaneously serves more than two users with high transmit power, while the ESSR of ZF scheme always grows with the number of the served users. On the contrast, MF scheme is better than ZF scheme in the low SNR regime. Simulation results corroborate the analytic results.

Interference Alignment (IA) is technique that, in a large sense, makes use of the increasing signal dimensions available in the system through MIMO and OFDM technologies in order to globally reduce the interference suffered by users in a network. In this paper, we address the problem of downlink cellular networks, the so-called interfering broadcast channels, where mobile users at cell edges may suffer from high interference and thus, poor performance. Starting from the downlink IA scheme proposed by Suh et al., a new approach is proposed where each user feeds back multiple selected received signal directions with high signal-to-interference gain. A exhaustive search based scheduler selects a subset of users to be served simultaneously, balancing between sum-rate performance and fairness, but becomes untractable in dense network scenarios where many users send simultaneous requests. Therefore, we develop a sub-optimal scheduler that greatly decreases the complexity while preserving a near-optimal data rate gain. More interestingly, our simulations show that the IA scheme becomes valuable only in correlated channels, whereas the matched filtering based scheme performs the best in the uncorrelated scenarios.

We considered a precoder used in wireless information transfer (WIT) and wireless power transfer (WPT) systems for multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) systems. We compare two representative linear precoders which are minimum mean square error (MMSE) and signal-to-leakage-and-noise ratio (SLNR) based precoders for data users and energy beamformer for energy users. The simulation results show that the rate-energy region of the considered precoder is weighed towards one side which is data rate side or harvested energy side according to power allocation between data users and energy users. Besides, when there are many energy users, controlling the direction of the data signal is important in the aspect of energy harvesting.

Multibeam satellites allow for significant boost in capacity by reusing the available spectrum and regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding promises to be one efficient technique to manage the inter-beam interference in the forward link. In this paper, the RZF precoding problem is first cast within an equivalent Bayesian inference framework. Then, we propose two kinds of message passing based precoding approaches, namely variational message passing based RZF (VMP-RZF) and approximate message passing based RZF (AMP-RZF). Compared with evaluating RZF directly, our proposed methods circumvent the matrix inversion operation and thus enjoy a much lower complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that the normalized mean square errors of both VMP-RZF and AMP-RZF with respect to the true RZF are negligible while AMP-RZF converges faster than VMP-RZF.

This paper considers coordinated linear precoding in downlink multicell multiuser orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) network. A less-complex, fast and provably convergent algorithm that maximizes the weighted sum-rate with per base station (BS) transmit power constraint is formulated. We approximate the nonconvex weighted sum-rate maximization (WSRM) problem with a solvable convex form by means of sequential parametric convex approximation (SPCA) approach. The second order cone program (SOCP) formulations of the objective function and constraints of the optimization problem are derived through proper change of variables, first order linear approximation and hyperbolic constraints transformation, etc. The algorithm converges to the suboptimal solution taking fewer number of iterations in comparison to other known iterative WSRM algorithms. Finally, numerical results are presented to justify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm.

We investigate the performance of a combined Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) and a Volterra nonlinear equalization (VNLE) in a nonlinear fiber-optic communication system aiming at a data rate of 100 Gbits/sec. THP-VNLE is compared with a feed-forward VNLE and a combined VNLE decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) by means of performance and computational complexity. Two different transmission scenarios, both using a 25 GBaud 16QAM signal, are introduced, and the performance of the different equalizers is assessed qualitively, and via Monte-Carlo simulations for the measurement of the BER.

In this paper, we solve the sum mean-squared error (MSE)-optimal 1-bit quantized precoding problem exactly for small-to-moderate sized multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems via branch and bound. To this end, we reformulate the original NP-hard precoding problem as a tree search and deploy a number of strategies that improve the pruning efficiency without sacrificing optimality. We evaluate the error-rate performance and the complexity of the resulting 1-bit branch-and-bound (BB-1) precoder, and compare its efficacy to that of existing, suboptimal algorithms for 1-bit precoding in MU-MIMO systems.
