This work deals with hybrid beamforming for the MIMO Interfering Broadcast Channel (IBC), i.e. the Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) Multi-User (MU) Multi-Cell (MC) downlink (DL) channel. Hybrid beamforming (HBF) is a low complexity alternative for fully digital precoding in Massive MIMO systems. Hybrid architectures involve a combination of digital and analog processing that enables both beamforming and multiplexing gains. We consider BF design by maximizing the Weighted Sum Rate (WSR) for the case of Perfect Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT). We optimize the WSR using minorization and alternating optimization, the result of which is observed to converge fast. The design is proposed for both fully and partially connected analog BF architectures. Moreover, we consider the BF design under realistic scenarios with per-RF (radio frequency) chain or per-antenna power constraints, leading to novel interference leakage aware water filling procedures. Simulation results illustrate the good WSR performance of the designs and the gains over naive constraint satisfaction approaches.

Submitted paper deals with scanning of segmented gray-scale images using two-dimensional space filling curves. A new image processing approach based on image segmentation and correlation optimization of space-filling curves is presented. The concatenation of resulting individual segments 1-dimensional representation provides higher adjacent pixel similarity than the 1-dimensional representation of the original image. The final segments concatenated 1-dimensional representation can provide improved base for applying lossless or lossy compression methods, such as the entropic coding or predictive coding respectively. The paper analyses the adjacent pixel differences in the final 1-dimensional image representations gained using the traditional and the proposed scanning method from the entropy and prediction gain point of view to indicate the applicability of the described approach.

In this paper, we present a weighted cyclic prefix orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (WCP-OFDM) transceiver as a generalization of traditional cyclic prefix (CP)-OFDM. In time-variant channels, this multicarrier transmission scheme may mitigate inter-channel interference (ICI) thanks to the use of non-rectangular pulse shapes. A precoding step may be required in order to reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) at the transmitter output. For instance, a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) precoder leads to a single carrier transmission scheme with frequency domain equalization. We analyze the consequences of such a precoding, in terms of performances, in the context of a time-frequency selective channel.

In this paper, we consider a distributed transmitter (D-TX) system, in which each TX has a dissimilar power amplifier with different maximum output power, and different number of transmit antennas. To improve energy efficiency (EE) of the D-TX system, we design a multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) precoding matrix, a transmit antenna selection (AS) matrix, and a power control (PC) matrix. A conventional zero-forcing based MU-MIMO precoding is shown to be EE optimal for given AS and PC. Optimal and heuristic PC methods are proposed for given AS and MU-MIMO precoding. For the AS, we also propose heuristic algorithms. Average transmit power, outage probability, and EE performance are evaluated to compare three AS algorithms, and to observe the performance gap between the optimal and heuristic PC methods. From the numerical results, we discuss a tradeoff between AS complexity and EE performance and provide a useful guide for energy efficient D-TX system design.

Millimeter wave communication provides high data rates thanks to large arrays at the transmitter and receiver, coupled with large bandwidth channels. Exploiting the arrays is challenging due to the need to configure precoding at the transmitter based on the large frequency selective channel. In this paper we exploit the power iteration principle and propose a robust analog precoding training algorithm that can be applied in both frequency division duplex transmission (FDD) systems and time division duplex transmission (TDD) systems with or without RF calibration. We further analyze the convergence of the proposed algorithm and show how it converges to the singular value decomposition optimality exponentially. We propose null space projection on top of the power iteration to form multiple orthogonal beams at the transmitter and receiver. Strongest tap selection with proper energy pruning is used to collect as much precoding gain as possible from a frequency selective fading channel. The exponential effective SINR mapping performance is evaluated and demonstrates that the overall approach works effectively. Numerical simulation results demonstrate algorithm robustness and the algorithm works effectively not only for the simplified millimeter wave directional channels, but also for more general rich scattering channels.

In this study, an adaptive and variable-rate feedback reduction technique for partitioned vector quantization (P-VQ) in MU-MISO downlink precoding is proposed. Independent feedback reduction is performed for both channel quality indicator (CQI) and channel direction indicator (CDI) over slowly-varying Rayleigh channel. The users adaptively reduce the feedback overhead for quantized channel state information (CSI) depending on the rate and direction of change in the correlated CQIs and CDIs. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme greatly lessens the communication overhead with very small performance loss and enhances the quantization efficiency.

Constant envelope (CE) precoding is an appealing transmission technique which enables the use of highly efficient nonlinear radio frequency (RF) power amplifiers (PAs). For CE precoding in a single-user multiple-input single-output (MISO) channel, a desired constellation is feasible at the receiver if and only if it can be scaled to lie in an annulus, whose boundaries are characterized by the instantaneous channel realization. Therefore, if a fixed receiver constellation is used for CE precoding in fading channel, where the annulus is time-varying, there is a non-zero probability of encountering a channel that makes CE precoding infeasible. To tackle this problem, we study the fixed-rate adaptive receiver constellation design for CE precoding to minimize symbol error rate (SER) in a single-user MISO flat-fading channel with an arbitrary number of antennas at the transmitter. Specifically, this paper proposes an efficient algorithm to find the optimal two-ring amplitude-and-phase shift keying (APSK) constellation that is both feasible and of the maximum minimum Euclidean distance (MED), for any given constellation size and instantaneous channel realization. Numerical results show that by using the optimized adaptive receiver constellation, our proposed scheme achieves significantly improved SER performance than CE precoding with fixed receiver constellation. Furthermore, with the PA efficiency gain achieved by CE precoding, our proposed scheme requires less transmitter power consumption to achieve a desired SER level than linear precoding schemes under the less-stringent average per-antenna power constraint (PAPC).

In this paper, we propose a new edge model for edge adaptive graph-based transforms (EA-GBTs) in video compression. In particular, we consider step and ramp edge models to design graphs used for defining transforms, and compare their performance on coding intra and inter predicted residual blocks. In order to reduce the signaling overhead of block-adaptive coding, a new edge coding method is introduced for the ramp model. Our experimental results show that the proposed methods outperform classical DCT-based encoding and that ramp edge models provide better performance than step edge models for intra predicted residuals.

Conventional video coding uses motion estimation to perform adaptive linear predictive encoding. Wyner-Ziv coding does not use predictive coding but performs motion estimation at the decoder. Recent work uses a difference signal at the encoder to estimate the prediction quality at the decoder. In this paper, we recognise that this operation constitutes a step in the motion estimation process. We exploit this information by omitting suitable blocks, effectively implementing linear predictive coding with deadzone quantisation for parts of the input signal. This modified Wyner-Ziv coding results in large bitrate reductions as well as significant decoding complexity decrease. At certain bitrates, our modified Wyner-Ziv codec outperforms conventional hybrid coding in an I-B-I-B setup.

This paper proposes an open-loop correlation reduction precoding scheme for overloaded multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In overloaded MIMO-OFDM systems, frequency diversity through joint maximum likelihood (ML) decoding suppresses performance degradation owing to spatial signal multiplexing. However, on a line-of-sight (LOS) channel, a channel matrix may have a large correlation between coded symbols transmitted on separate subcarriers. The correlation reduces the frequency diversity gain and deteriorates the signal separation capability. Thus, in the proposed scheme, open-loop precoding in order to reduce the correlation between codewords transmitted on different signal streams is employed at the transmitter of an overloaded MIMO system. The proposed precoding scheme changes the amplitude as well as the phase of the coded symbols transmitted on different subcarriers. Numerical results obtained through computer simulation show that the proposed scheme improves the bit error rate performance on Rician channels.
