Millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication has emerged as one of the most promising technologies to deal with the increasing demand in data transmissions over wireless networks. However, due to the propagation characteristic at the mmWave band, much higher pathloss is observed compared to the commonly-used microwave band. Thus, antenna arrays become a necessary ingredient in mmWave systems because of their needed beamforming gains. Beamforming for multiple users, also known as multiuser precoding, can be utilized to further improve the spectral efficiency of mmWave systems. Unfortunately, fully digital precoding with large antenna arrays is difficult to implement due to the hardware cost and power constraint in mmWave systems. Recent works in literature have advocated the structure of hybrid analog/digital precoding for mmWave systems, in which only minor performance degradation is observed. In this work, we study hybrid precoding for multiuser mmWave systems. After reviewing recent works in literature on hybrid precoding designs, we then develop a new hybrid minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) precoder. The proposed precoder can be easily obtained by an orthogonal matching pursuit-based algorithm. Simulation results show significant performance advantages of the proposed precoder over known designs in various system settings.

Predictive coding eliminates redundancy due to correlations between the current and past signal samples, so that only the innovation, or prediction residual, needs to be encoded. However, the decoder may, in principle, also exploit correlations with future samples. Prior decoder enhancement work mainly applied a non-causal filter to smooth the regular decoder reconstruction. In this work we broaden the scope to pose the problem: Given an allowed decoding delay, what is the optimal decoding algorithm for predictively encoded sources? To exploit all information available to the decoder, the proposed algorithm recursively estimates conditional probability densities, given both past and available future information, and computes the optimal reconstruction via conditional expectation. We further derive a near-optimal low complexity approximation to the optimal decoder, which employs a time-invariant lookup table or codebook approach. Simulations indicate that the latter method closely approximates the optimal delayed decoder, and that both considerably outperform the competition.

In this paper we study the channel estimation problem for a CP-OFDM based hybrid analog-digital massive MIMO system. In contrast to a conventional MIMO system, two additional constraints need to be fulfilled. First, the analog precoding is achieved using only a phase shift network, which imposes constant modulus constraints on the elements of the RF precoding and decoding matrices. Second, there is just one common equivalent RF precoding or decoding matrix for all subcarriers. These constraints lead to a challenging channel estimation task that includes the training design. To estimate the channel at the receiver, a least squares (LS) method and a compressed sensing (CS) method with a single-stage or a two-stage design are introduced. Compared to the single-stage designs, the two-stage designs have a lower computational complexity. Sufficient conditions for a unique channel estimation are derived for both methods. Simulation results show that the CS method provides more accurate channel estimates than the LS method under mild conditions.

We address in this paper the problem of transmitting data to multiple mobile stations (MS) using a decode-and-forward strategy. The links between the base station and relays are considered ideal and we study the downlink between relays and mobile stations. We propose a method to optimize the precoding vector in relays to cancel out multiple access interference and to maximize the signal to noise ratio at the mobile stations. Simulation results show that the maximum diversity advantage can be obtained, which is the product of the number of antennas at each relay by the number of relays minus the total number of system constraints. Furthermore, using Lagrange multipliers to optimize precoding vectors, we obtain a flexibility that enables us to consider different cases for signal to noise ratio at mobile stations.

In the context of cognitive radio, this paper proposes a simple spectral precoding for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) to suppress its out-of-band radiation for a better adjacent-channel coexistence. Additionally, the proposed scheme is also aimed to improve the in-band subcarrier notching to efficiently utilize the fragmented spectrum. Through the proper system modeling and optimal selection for the precoder's weights, it is demonstrated to achieve a much better spectral compactness than the conventional OFDM, meanwhile possess only a trivial cost for computational complexity. Compared with other OFDM variant schemes, it is thereby concluded that the proposed scheme can be one of the promising candidates for the physical layer of future's cognitive radio devices.

In this contribution we propose two new designs of transmit and receive processing for multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) downlink systems that employ filter bank based multicarrier with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM). Our goal is to overcome the limits on the channel frequency selectivity and/or the allowed number of receive antennas per user terminal that are imposed on the state-of-the-art solutions. In the first method the design of precoders and equalizers is iterative and minimum mean square error (MMSE) based. The second is a closed-form design based on the signal-to-leakage ratio (SLR). Via numerical simulations we evaluate the performance of both methods and demonstrate their superiority over two other approaches in the literature.

Because of the great data of the hyperspectral image,it is not good for storage and transmission. To work out a high efficiency compression method for hyperspectral image is essential. prediction encoding is easy to realize and has been studied widely in the hyperspectral image compression field. High compression ratio, resolution independence and fast decoding speed are the main advantages of fractal coding which makes full use of the local self-similarity existing in images and is considered as a promising compression method. However, the application of fractal coding in the hyperspectral image compression field is not widespread. In this paper, we propose a new fractal hyperspectral image compression algorithm. Considering the noises which exist in the hyperspectral image and the integrity of decompression, Firstly, intra-band prediction is implemented to the first band. Checking the noise whether the current encoding band is greater than the threshold value. If it is greater, the current encoding band will be considered to be a noise band and perform intra-band prediction. The first non-noise band which precisely followed the noise band performs the intraband prediction encoding. The rest of the bands will be encoded by modified fractal coding algorithm. The proposed algorithm can effectively exploit the temporal-spatial correlation in hyperspectral image, since each range block is approximated by the domain block which is of the same size as the range block in the adjacent band. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm provides very promising performance at low bitrate.

The usual performance comparisons of wireless systems are based on a constrained sum-power at the transmitter. However, many wireless systems are actually constrained in their equivalent isotropic radiated power (EIRP). So far, research effort in the area of beamforming under constrained EIRP seems to be done solely for single-user systems. As an original contribution, this contribution develops a theoretical description of an EIRP-limited multi-user system with joint consideration of the EIRP and the capacity. Accordingly, the EIRP is interpreted as a function of the precoding matrix instead of a static measure of the antenna. The theoretical formulations is applicable to arbitrary antenna designs, including multi-mode antennas. Down-scaling of any coventional linear precoding solution is proposed as a simple strategy to comply with the EIRP limit. Numerical results are provided in the context of massive MIMO with simple linear precoding techniques.

MIMO precoding matches the transmission to channel conditions in order to reduce or eliminate interference at the receiver. In this paper, we are interested in the case where the receiver is also equipped with a linear processor, specifically a ZF filter. We analyze the effect of the ZF receive filter on the performance of a variety of MIMO precoders. It is shown that receive-side ZF equalization can remove the error floors that sometimes appear with regularized zero-forcing precoding and matched-filter precoding.

This paper considers robust constant envelope (CE) precoding with antenna-subset selection (AS) in a large-scale MISO downlink scenario where only imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) is available. CE precoding is a recently proposed transmission scheme that enables the use of cheap but highly power-efficient power amplifiers, while AS is a well-known approach for reducing the number of power amplifiers. The combination of these two techniques can significantly cut down costs in hardware implementations. We formulate a power minimization problem for AS CE precoding where the worst-case symbol error rate is constrained to be less than a given threshold. The formulation utilizes our recent results on signal characterization of CE precoding. The formulated power minimization optimization problem turns out to be a zero-one linear program. We show that this problem is NP-hard in general. Then, we propose an efficient approximation by Lagrangian dual relaxation and greedy knapsack approximation. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve near-optimal performance, and the average number of active antennas accounts for only 19 - 53% of the total transmit antennas.
