In multimedia stream matching applications, user experience is becoming more and more important. In this paper, we study the problem of predictive stream matching, where a large number of queries are evaluated before the actual stream data arrive. This is equivalent to developing predictive algorithms for the filters registered on data streams. To this end, We propose to efficiently order the pipeline filters in multimedia streams under the Markov assumption. Our experimental evaluations validate that our predictive data stream filtering framework is able to provide an efficient solution for evaluating large number of queries on streams. © 2011 IEEE.

Clinical Decision Trees for Predicting Conversion from Cognitive Impairment No Dementia (CIND) to Dementia in a Longitudinal Population-Based Study

The lack of gold standard diagnostic criteria for cognitive impairment in the absence of dementia has resulted in variable nomenclature, case definitions, outcomes, risk factors, and prognostic utilities. Our objective was to elucidate the clinical correlates of conversion to dementia in a longitudinal population-based sample. Using data from the Canadian Study of Health and Aging, a machine learning algorithm was used to identify symptoms that best differentiated converting from nonconverting cognitively impaired not demented participants. Poor retrieval was the sole predictor of conversion to dementia over 5 years. This finding suggests that patients with impaired retrieval are at greater risk for progression to dementia at follow-up. Employing significant predictors as markers for ongoing monitoring and assessment, rather than as clinical markers of conversion, is recommended given the less than optimal specificity of the predictive algorithms.

Several operations of Web-based applications are optimized with respect to the set of resources that will receive the majority of requests in the near future, namely the hot set. Unfortunately, the existing algorithms for the hot set identification do not work well for the emerging social network applications, that are characterized by quite novel features with respect to the traditional Web: highly interactive user accesses, upload and download operations, short lifespan of the resources, social interactions among the members of the online communities. We propose and evaluate innovative combinations of predictive models and social-aware solutions for the identification of the hot set. Experimental results demonstrate that some of the considered algorithms improve the accuracy of the hot set identification up to 30% if compared to existing models, and they guarantee stable and robust results even in the context of social network applications characterized by high variability.

In Silico Technology for Identification of Potentially Toxic Compounds in Drug Discovery

This review gives the background to analysis of toxicity data, development of predictive algorithms, and applications of these algorithms in lead selection and optimization. The considered algorithms predict acute toxicity (Mouse and Rat LD50), genotoxicity (Ames Test), carcinogenicity, and organ-specific health effects (based on diverse animal and human studies). These tools can aid drug design in several ways. Often lead selection is based on the use of simple molecular properties (logP, MW, H-bonding) to define either a 'druglike' or 'leadlike' chemical space. These definitions need to be supplemented with substructure-specific considerations that account for variable chemical reactivity, ionization, and fuzzy-specific interactions with various biological constituents. The available toxicity predictions can fill these gaps to a certain extent, by supplementing or replacing various pre-defined filters of "alert substructures" that ignore the dependence of chemical reactivity and toxicity on substituent effects and whole-molecule ADME effects. In drug discovery these tools can help to prioritize in vitro measurements and estimate animal toxicity, although multiple data gaps in their training sets restrict their usefulness. A partial solution to this problem is calculation of 95% confidence intervals (or continuous probabilities) that indicate toxicological similarity of a given compound to the training set. If a compound is not too dissimilar, "hazard substructures" can be automatically generated, thus suggesting possible mechanistic explanations and structural modifications of the lead compound. The best solution however is to develop new predictive algorithms based on company-specific data, and there are available analytical and development software tools that can help to do this. Mobile computers require Mobile IP to preserve connectivity and properly route information while roaming over foreign networks. Registration, forwarding delay, and tunnel initialization diminishes the performance of mobility protocols during handoff. We propose a proactive rather than reactive solution to improve the performance of Mobile IP. We extend the current protocol with two new entities: ghost Mobile Host and ghost Foreign Agent. Our target is mobility scenarios in which mobile hosts are moving at a very high-speed. Our protocol extension uses the Kalman filter to determine the trajectory and speed of the mobile host and to proactively allocate resources for Mobile IP. Preliminary experiments conducted using the RAMON emulator show that the proposed predictive methods offer a promising range of 20-50% of performance improvement.

This paper investigates encoding of vehicular position information using predictive algorithms in Inter-Vehicle Communications (IVC) from source and channel coding viewpoint. Assuming the 15-mode as a vehicular driving model, three types of schemes are compared;an ordinary PCM scheme that transmits position information every sampling period, predictive coding schemes, and the novel scheme using predicted information. This paper estimates the decoded errors caused by transmission errors, when position information gotten from a positioning system is transmitted. Simulation results show that the novel scheme is effective as a coding scheme in IVC.

Effective cancer therapy or prevention has been the dream of physicians and scientists for many years. Although we are still very far from our ultimate goal of cancer prevention, significant milestones have been realized in terms of our knowledge base and understanding of the pathogenesis of cancerous cells and the involvement of the immune system against both self- and virus-associated tumor antigens. Immunotherapeutic strategies are now accepted to being superior in terms of the exquisite specificity that they offer in targeting only tumor cells as opposed to the existent chemotherapy or radiation therapy that is more general and invasive with many associated side effects. There are several immunotherapeutic strategies that are currently under investigation. This review primarily focuses on the significant advances made in the use of synthetic peptides in the development of subunit cancer vaccines. We have attempted to highlight some of the fundamental issues regarding antigen processing and presentation, Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) restriction, T-cell help, structural determinants in antibody recognition, and the use of these concepts in the rational design and delivery of peptide vaccines to elicit protective humoral and cell mediated immune responses. The recent use of costimulatory molecules and cytokines to augment immune responses also has been discussed along with the contributions of our laboratory to the field of synthetic peptide vaccine development. On encoding of position information in inter-vehicle communications

This paper discusses encoding of vehicular position information using predictive algorithms in inter-vehicle communications (IVC) from the viewpoints of source coding and noisy channels. Two vehicular driving models are assumed;one is the 15-mode as a suburban rapid transit driving pattern, the other is called calming mode as a street-driving pattern. Three types of schemes are compared;a pulse code modulation (PCM) scheme, a predictive coding (PC) scheme, and the variable interval prediction (VIP) scheme that is proposed here. This paper assumes that precise position information is got from a positioning system, and that all the transmitters and receivers have common predictors. Performance comparisons of the three types of schemes are carried out both of noiseless and noisy channels. Results show that the VIP scheme is superior to any other scheme.

Antigen processing by proteasomes: Insights into the molecular basis of crypticity

Eight to eleven amino acid residues are the sizes of predominant peptides found to be associated with MHC class I molecules. Proteasomes have been implicated in antigen processing and generation of such peptides. Advanced methodologies in peptide elution together with sequence determination have led to the characterisation of MHC class I binding motifs. More recently, screening of random peptide phage display libraries and synthetic combinatorial peptide libraries have also been successfully used. This has led to the development and use of predictive algorithms to screen antigens for potential CTL epitopes. Not all predicted epitopes will be generated in vivo and the emerging picture suggests differential presentation of predicted CTL epitopes ranging from cryptic to immunodominant. The scope of this review is to discuss antigen processing by proteasomes, and to put forward a hypothesis that the molecular basis of immunogenicity can be a function of proteasomal processing. This may explain how pathogens and tumours are able to escape immunosurveillance by altering sequences required by proteasomes for epitope generation.

B-cell epitope mapping within the MA16 antigenic sequence found in Eimeria acervulina merozoites and sporozoites

Overlapping heptapeptides derived from the MA16 Eimeria acervulina antigenic sequence (Castle et al., 1991) were synthesised on polypropylene pins ('pepskan' technique, Cambridge Research Biochemicals, UK), Binding of antibodies from chickens and rabbits infected and immunised respectively with various species of Eimeria oocysts (E. acervulina, E. tenella, E praecox, E. necatrix and E. maxima), was examined using the coated pins as the solid phase of an enzyme immunoassay (EIA). Antigenicity of the overlapping synthetic heptapeptides was then analysed using a number of algorithms based on the amino acid sequence to predict secondary protein structure, hydrophilicity, acrophilicity and chain flexibility profiles, The antigenicity of this sequence appears to be quite different from that found for the E. tenella GX3264 antigenic sequence (Bhogal et al., 1992) whose profile was similarly examined (Talebi and Mulcahy, 1994) using the same rabbit and chicken anti-Eimeria oocyst sera.
