A predictive functional control (PFC) technique is applied to the temperature control of a pilot-plant batch reactor equipped with a mono-fluid heating/cooling system. A cascade control structure has been implemented according to the process sub-units reactor and heating/cooling system. Hereby differences in the sub-units dynamics are taken into consideration. PFC technique is described and its main differences with a standard model predictive control (MPC) technique are discussed. To evaluate its robustness, PFC has been applied to the temperature control of an exothermic chemical reaction. Experimental results show that PFC enables a precise tracking of the set-point temperature and that the PFC performances are mainly determined by its internal dynamic process model. Finally, results show the performance of the cascade control structure to handle different dynamics of the heating/cooling system. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper deals with an application of the predictive functional control with a state estimator-based internal model (PFC_EBIM). The PFC_EBIM has been shown to be effective in simulation. However, neither detailed experimental validation nor comparison with other controllers has been reported thus far. Here, the PFC_EBIM is implemented in a single-axis positioning system, and a few experimental tests are conducted. Tracking performance of the PFC_EBIM, standard PFC, and P-PI control for both smooth and non-smooth reference signals are compared. The experimental results prove the effectiveness of the PFC_EBIM.

The present study aims to propose a method for designing a predictive functional control (PFC) based on the particle swarm optimisation (PSO) algorithm for the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) process with time delay. Due to the cross-coupling, time delay, and other MIMO industrial process challenges, the classical controller could not overcome the system challenges. PFC is a model-based predictive controller that uses the state-space equations of the system. According to the results, the optimisation problem is resolved using the PSO for determining the optimal controller parameters. The incorporated PFC and PSO's performance as the proposed controller is evaluated using simulations on the chamber pressure coke furnace as a MIMO process with time-delay. The simulation results demonstrate that the PFC variables tuned by the PSO approach have better performance compared to the conventional PFC, especially in the presence of disturbances and uncertainty.

We propose a state estimator-based disturbance suppression technique for predictive functional control (PFC), which puts emphasis on attenuation of ramp disturbances. Augmenting the plant model with a disturbance model, we build a prediction-type estimator for the augmented model, which estimates ramp disturbances as well as the plant states. The state estimator enables us to predict the future output in the presence of ramp disturbances. We also analyse the structure of the proposed PFC system and controller poles and prove that the estimator-based PFC system actually has two integral actions. Finally, several numerical simulation tests are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

predictive functional control (PFC) as a new active quene management (AQM) method in dynamic TCP networks supporting explicit congestion notification (ECN) is proposed. The ability of the controller in handling system delay along with its simplicity and low computational load makes PFC a privileged AQM method in the high speed networks. Besides, considering the disturbance term (which represents model/process mismatches, external disturbances, and existing noise) in the control formulation adds some level of robustness into the PFC-AQM controller. This is an important and desired property in the control of dynamically-varying computer networks. In this paper, the controller is designed based on a small signal linearized fluid-flow model of the TCP/AQM networks. Then, closed-loop transfer function representation of the system is derived to analyze the robustness with respect to the nertwork and controller parameters. The analytical as well as the packet-level ns-2 simulation results show the out-performance of the developed controller for both quene regulation and resource utilization. Fast response, low quene fluctuations (and consequently low delay jitter), high link utilization, good disturbance rejection, scalability, and low packet marking probability are other features of the developed method with respect to other well-known AQM methods such as RED, PI, and REM which are also simulated for comparison. Photovoltaic systems have earned recognition as incredibly interesting renewable energy sources, due to simplicity of supply. These systems have a nonlinear characteristic which causes them a low energy conversion. However, it necessity for control systems capable of outperforming conventional controllers and overcome the existing operational instabilities. The main objective of this paper is to design a predictive functional control to the photovoltaic generators, to make it follow a desired trajectory and to generate a maximum power. A predictive functional control is defined as advanced control which exploit the future behavior of process, and its consists in using of discretized model of the photovoltaic system. The simulation results prove the highest tracking efficiency of this algorithm which are evaluated by means of efficiency, stability and robustness under different scenarios of varied metrological condition.

This paper considers a class of predictive functional control problems for nonlinear systems based on multi-LPV models. First, according to the piece-wise embedding principle, multiple Linear Parameters-Varying (LPV) models have been applied to approximate describe the nonlinear system. For each LPV model, a predictive functional controller based on a linear combination of known basis functions is designed. Then a switching law between each controller is designed, to guarantee the stability of the whole system. Compared with traditional state feedback controller, the predictive functional controller has better control effect and robustness. Therefore, the proposed algorithm has less computation and less conservation. Finally, a simulation example is given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

This paper deals with the thickness control of single cold rolling mills and with the combined thickness and tension control of tandem cold rolling mills. It is shown that PI(D) controllers can be effectively replaced by the predictive functional control (PFC), which can be easily implemented and tuned under industrial automation environments. The rolling mill was first physically modelled based on literature data. Data required for the model-based control are identified from a physical model of the processes. Simulations show the advantage of the PFC controller over the PI control.

An adaptive steady predictive functional control algorithm using the orthogonal Kautz function base has been designed in this paper. Performance of the closed-loop system is discussed, and the stability condition is given based on Lyapunov stability theory. A new improved parameter compensating algorithm depended on genetic algorithm is introduced. The simulations verified the given strategy.

predictive functional control (PFC) is a fairly straightforward model-based technique for controlling stable and monotonically convergent dynamics in a systematic fashion. However, owing to simplified design assumptions, the control performance generally degrades with oscillatory or unstable processes. This paper focuses on pre-stabilising such difficult dynamics, represented as second-order prediction models, before implementing the PFC. In this proposal, the pre-compensator is designed with a root locus method that shifts the undesirable open-loop poles to the stable break-in/breakaway position by varying compensator gain. It has been highlighted that such dynamics transformation enables PFC application in the standard manner by preserving design simplicity and intuitiveness in terms of parameter tuning and constraint handling. Two simulation examples are included to study the pros and cons of the proposal against the conventional PFC algorithm.
