The present study aims to fill the research gap by evaluating published empirical studies and answering the specific research question: Can individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) predict upcoming linguistic information during real-time language comprehension? Following the PRISMA framework, an initial search via PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, and Google Scholar yielded a total of 697 records. After screening the abstract and full text, 10 studies, covering 350 children and adolescents with ASD ranging from 2 to 15 years old, were included for analysis. We found that individuals with ASD may predict the upcoming linguistic information by using verb semantics but not pragmatic prosody during language comprehension. Nonetheless, 9 out of 10 studies used short spoken sentences as stimuli, which may not encompass the complexity of language comprehension. Moreover, eye-tracking in the lab setting was the primary data collection technique, which may further limit the generalizability of the research findings. Using a narrative approach to synthesize and evaluate the research findings, we found that individuals with ASD may have the ability to predict the upcoming linguistic information. However, this field of research still calls for more studies that will expand the scope of research topics, utilize more complex linguistic stimuli, and employ more diverse data collection techniques.

How do the two main types of neural dynamics, aperiodic transients and oscillations, contribute to the interactions between feedforward (FF) and feedback (FB) pathways in sensory inference and predictive processing? We discuss three theoretical perspectives. First, we critically evaluate the theory that gamma and alpha/beta rhythms play a role in classic hierarchical predictive coding (HPC) by mediating FF and FB communication, respectively. Second, we outline an alternative functional model in which rapid sensory inference is mediated by aperiodic transients, whereas oscillations contribute to the stabilization of neural representations over time and plasticity processes. Third, we propose that the strong dependence of oscillations on predictability can be explained based on a biologically plausible alternative to classic HPC, namely dendritic HPC.

An Integrative Model of Psychotherapeutic Interventions Based on a predictive processing Framework

There are numerous approaches to psychotherapy with distinct underlying theories. Yet, it is unlikely that any of these is conclusive because they broadly yield similar therapeutic effects. A different approach attempts to derive the common factors from the specific treatments and proposes that these common factors primarily promote therapeutic effects. But although generally promising, these common factors have not been integrated into a more fundamental explanatory framework that also considers the effectiveness of specific factors. Therefore, an integrative model of psychotherapeutic interventions is still missing. The aim of this paper is to help fill that gap by applying the theory of predictive processing to interventions from various psychotherapeutic approaches, including cognitive behavioural therapy, client-centred therapy, and psychoanalysis. The analysis results in the predictive processing model of psychotherapeutic interventions (3PI model for short). The new model reveals that psychotherapy comprises two main functions: to provide a safe and positive environment to which the patient can adapt, and to facilitate the process of updating a dysfunctional generative model. Further, it shows that common factors primarily promote the first function, while specific factors mainly support the second function, offering a new perspective to the debate on common and the specific factors.

Belief and Prediction: Wittgenstein's Philosophy of Religion in Dialogue with predictive processing

The present article aims to offer a new perspective on later Wittgenstein's notion of belief by comparing the ideas in two well-known works of his, namely, On Certainty (OC) and Philosophical Investigations (PI), with ideas from a widely recognized theory of brain function within the field of neuroscience known as predictive processing (PP). The purpose of this comparison is to demonstrate how Wittgenstein's notion of belief transcends the conventional cognitive/non-cognitive dichotomy when examined alongside the PP framework-a model that, by integrating action with perception, already obscures the sharp boundary between these two categories. Employing a comparative philosophical approach, this study brings together insights from PP theory and Wittgenstein's ideas on belief, exploring how PP could support and, in certain respects, shed light on Wittgenstein's ideas about religion. One central point of the present analysis is to challenge the claim that Wittgenstein's philosophy of religion isolates religious discourse as uniquely evidence-resistant and/or evidence-repellent. By reading Wittgenstein's ideas on world image and form of life through the lens of PP-with a special focus on the notion of self-evidencing-it is shown that the notion of belief, whether religious or not, in both Wittgenstein's later philosophy and PP, is as much about being as it is about believing.

Cross-linguistic effects in grammatical gender assignment and predictive processing in L1 Greek, L1 Russian, and L1 Turkish speakers of Norwegian as a second language

The present study examines grammatical gender knowledge in offline production (gender marking on indefinite articles) and online gender processing (visual world paradigm) in adult second language (L2) learners of Norwegian with three different first languages (L1s): Greek, Russian, and Turkish. In particular, it investigates the role of the following factors: (1) presence vs. absence of grammatical gender in L1 (Norwegian, Greek and Russian have gender, whereas Turkish does not), (2) lexical gender congruency, (3) structural similarity between L1 and L2 in the realization of gender, and (4) proficiency in L2. In offline production, no difference was found between the three L2 groups: they all overused the default gender (masculine). However, L1 effects were observed in the eye-tracking task, where the high-proficiency L1 Greek and L1 Russian speakers showed earlier and more prominent signs of predictive gender processing compared to the high-proficiency L1 Turkish speakers. There were no effects of lexical gender congruency or structural similarity. This suggests that, when it comes to predictive gender processing, what matters is proficiency and the presence vs. absence of grammatical gender in the L1. We interpret the findings in the context of current approaches to predictive processing emphasizing the role of cue reliability and utility.

To overcome methodological deficiencies in previous eye-tracking and event-related potentials (ERP) studies, the fixation-related potential (FRP) approach was used to investigate how aging affects predictive processing in silent Chinese free-view reading. Forty older and 42 young adults participated in the experiment. All of them reported good reading abilities and none suffered from physical, mental, or cognitive diseases. The older participants were over 60 years of age (62.670 +/- 3.018), and they did not differ from the younger group in the schooling years (11.43 vs. 12.10, t = 1.520), and in normal or corrected-to-normal vision (4.917 vs. 4.958, t = 1.787). All participants were native Chinese speakers. The results revealed weaker contextual predictability effects on earlier eye tracking measures, with smaller contextual predictability effects on gaze duration, refixation probability, and regression path duration being observed in older adults than young adults. The FRP data mimicked the eye-tracking data, with smaller contextual predictability effects on parafoveal processing and early negative deflections for older adults than the young adultswere observed. But equal contextual predictability N400 effects for older adults to their young adults counterparts were observed. Overall, we observed smaller contextual predictability effects for older adults than young adults on the measures of early word processing, suggesting an age-related decline in predictive processing in reading.

Pathological forgetting from a predictive processing perspective

Recent research suggests that natural forgetting is beneficial, allowing the brain to prioritize relevant information and disregard the irrelevant, thus aiding decision-making and mental health. Conversely, pathological conditions may arise from disruptions in these memory control processes. Without adequate memory control capacities, individuals can suffer from conditions like PTSD or addiction (where unwanted or addiction-related memories persist) on one end of the scale, to conditions such as dementia, Parkinson's disease or traumatic brain injury, which are characterised by heightened rates of forgetting on the other side. This review will explore the concept of predictive processing as a potential mechanism underlying pathological forgetting. It will summarise the neurobiological basis of predictive processing and how it influences what we remember or forget. As evident in the emerging literature, this has distinct implications for understanding pathological forgetting in psychological disorders. Finally, this review will highlight therapeutic interventions that have recently targeted predictive processes and consequently improved symptoms related to forgetting, suggesting translational applications for treatment approaches in these conditions. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

Clark has recently suggested that predictive processing advances a theory of neural function with the resources to put an ecumenical end to the "representation wars" of recent cognitive science. In this paper I defend and develop this suggestion. First, I broaden the representation wars to include three foundational challenges to representational cognitive science. Second, I articulate three features of predictive processing's account of internal representation that distinguish it from more orthodox representationalist frameworks. Specifically, I argue that it posits a resemblance-based representational architecture with organism-relative contents that functions in the service of pragmatic success, not veridical representation. Finally, I argue that internal representation so understood is either impervious to the three anti-representationalist challenges I outline or can actively embrace them.

On a traditional view of cognition, we see the agent acquiring stimuli, interpreting these in some way, and producing behavior in response. An increasingly popular alternative is the predictive processing framework. This sees the agent as continually generating predictions about the world, and responding productively to any errors made. Partly because of its heritage in the Bayesian brain theory, predictive processing has generally been seen as an inherently Bayesian process. The 'hierarchical prediction machine' which mediates it is envisaged to be a specifically Bayesian device. But as this paper shows, a specification for this machine can also be derived directly from information theory, using the metric of predictive payoff as an organizing concept. Hierarchical prediction machines can be built along purely information-theoretic lines, without referencing Bayesian theory in any way;this simplifies the account to some degree. The present paper describes what is involved and presents a series of working models. An experiment involving the conversion of a Braitenberg vehicle to use a controller of this type is also described.(C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The notion of predictive sound processing suggests that the auditory system prepares for upcoming sounds once it has detected regular features within a sequence. Here we investigated whether predictive processes are operating at birth in the human auditory system. Event-related potentials (ERP) were recorded from healthy newborns to occasional ascending pitch steps occurring in the 2nd or the 5th position within trains of tones with otherwise monotonously descending pitch. If the trains were processed in a predictive manner only deviant pitch steps occurring in the later train position would elicit the discriminative mismatch response (MMR). Deviants delivered in the 5th but not in the 2nd position of the tone trains elicited a significant MMR response. These results suggest that newborns represent pitch trends within sound sequences and they process them in a predictive manner.
