SPIDER: A Social Computing Inspired predictive routing Scheme for Softwarized Vehicular Networks

Software-defined vehicular network (SDVN) is a promising networking paradigm that can provide intelligent information exchanges by separating network management and data transmission. Although the transmission quality of vehicles can he greatly improved by deploying softwarized networking schemes, critical networking issues such as the timeliness of data packets remain due to the dynamic nature of vehicular networks. It is vital to design efficient networking schemes by deeply considering the characteristics of the network, transportation system, and users, to improve overall network performance. To this end, this paper proposes a social computing inspired predictive routing scheme (SPIDER) for SDVNs that has a comprehensive consideration to enable low-latency reliable data exchange under dynamic vehicular networks. As for the link lifetime grounded on the vehicular historical data, we introduce the context feature mining and one-shot prediction method to predict vehicle movements with considering the energy saving. We also involve social computing techniques to find the relay nodes with good data spreading abilities. The extensive experiments prove our proposed scheme outperforms four existing schemes.

In this paper, we introduce a neural network based predictive routing algorithm for on-chip networks which uses anticipated global network state and congestion information to efficiently route network traffic. The core of the algorithms is a multi-layer neural network machine learning approach where the inputs are level of occupancy of virtual channels, average latency for a particular router to be selected for route computation, the probability of virtual channel allocation, and the probability of winning switch arbitration at the crossbar. The algorithm lends itself to both node routing and source routing. To evaluate the PreNoc routing algorithm, we simulate both synthetic traffic and real application traces using a cycle-accurate simulator. In most test cases, the proposed approach outperforms current deterministic and adaptive routing techniques in terms of latency and throughput. The hardware overhead for supporting the new routing algorithm is minimal.

In this paper we introduce a cross-layer mechanism to enhance the effectiveness of link-state routing protocols by providing a localized estimate of the validity of a given route. Accurate predictions of route staleness result in less packet loss by selecting alternative paths before primary path failures. We present a proof of concept implementation that utilizes shared location and velocity information provided from each node through a common cross-layer substrate. Simulations using random-walk mobility models are presented for the OLSR protocol. The results show that predictive route adaptation can significantly reduce the average packet loss, average delay and jitter.

Aerial networks, composed of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) acting as Wi-Fi access points or cellular base stations, are emerging as an interesting solution to provide on-demand wireless connectivity to users, when there is no network infrastructure available, or to enhance the network capacity. This article proposes a traffic aware topology control solution for aerial networks that holistically combines the placement of UAVs with a predictive and centralized routing protocol. The synergy created by the combination of the UAV placement and routing solutions allows the aerial network to seamlessly update its topology according to the users' traffic demand, whilst minimizing the disruption caused by the movement of the UAVs. As a result, the Quality of Service (QoS) provided to the users is improved. The components of the proposed solution are described and evaluated in this article by means of simulation and an experimental testbed. The results show that the QoS provided to the users is significantly improved when compared to the corresponding baseline solutions.

Current parallel applications in parallel computing systems require an interconnection network to provide low and bounded communication delays. Communication characteristics such as traffic pattern and communication load change over time and, eventually, they may exceed available network capacity causing congestion and performance degradation. Congestion control based on adaptive routing should be applied in order to adapt quickly to changing traffic conditions. Studies on a vast range of parallel applications show repetitive behavior and can be characterized by a set of representative phases. This work presents a predictive and Distributed routing Balancing technique (PR-DRB) to control network congestion based on adaptive traffic distribution. PR-DRB uses speculative routing based on application repetitiveness. PR-DRB monitors messages latencies on routers and logs solutions to congestion, to quickly respond in future similar situations. Experimental results show that the predictive approach could be used to improve performance.

The interconnection design in computing clusters and data centers is expected to change significantly in the near future to sustain the increasing communication demand at controlled capitalization and operational cost. In particular, a shift from typ- ical and expensive full-bisection bandwidth interconnects (which safely cover the worst communication cases) to application oriented designs (which may provide cost-efficient data movement at larger system scales) is devised in academic research and industry initiatives. Having information of communication dynamics of applications (e.g. repetitiveness, computing and communication phases, traffic pattern and bandwidth, etc.) allows for efficiently managing and provisioning of network re- sources at reduced cost. This paper presents an Application-Aware predictive and Distributed routing Balancing technique (PR-DRB), a new method that controls network inefficiencies based on communication patterns of applications and speculative routing, PR-DRB monitors increments in the communication latency and, then, dynamically re-distributes the network traffic over multiple paths (path expansion) to deal with load unbalances. Additionally, PR-DRB stores the number of paths used to balance the traffic (solution) and links it to the application's pattern that caused the unbalance (problem). This information allows PR-DRB to respond to similar situations in repetitive patterns, quickly converging to a stable solution. Evaluation results show latency and completion time reductions of up to 37% for experiments conducted on 64 nodes executing the NAS benchmarks and the Lammps application.

V2X routing in a VANET Based on the Hidden Markov Model

It is very difficult to establish and maintain end-to-end connections in a vehicle ad hoc network (VANET) as a result of high vehicle speed, long inter-vehicle distance, and varying vehicle density. Instead, a store-and-forward strategy has been considered for vehicle communications. The success of this strategy, however, depends heavily on the cooperation among nodes. Different from exiting store-and-forward solutions, we propose predictive routing based on the hidden Markov model (PRHMM) for VANETS, which exploits the regularity of vehicle moving behaviors to increase the transmission performance. As vehicle movements often exhibit a high degree of repetition, including regular visits to certain places and regular contacts during daily activities, we can predict a vehicle's future locations based on the knowledge of past traces and the hidden Markov model. Consequently, the short-term route of a vehicle and its packet delivery probability for a specific mobile destination can be predicted. Moreover, PRHMM enables seamless handoff between vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications so that the transmission performance will not be constrained by the vehicle density and moving speed. Simulation evaluation demonstrates that PRHMM performs much better in terms of delivery ratio, end-to-end delay, traffic overhead, and buffer occupancy.

In this paper, we address the problem of efficient routing in delay tolerant networks. We propose a new routing protocol dubbed as ORION. In ORION, only a single copy of a data packet is kept in the network and transmitted, contact by contact, towards the destination. The aim of the ORION routing protocol is twofold: on one hand, it enhances the delivery ratio in networks where an end-to-end path does not necessarily exist, and on the other hand, it minimizes the routing delay and the network overhead to achieve better performances. With ORION, nodes are aware of their neighborhood by the mean of actual and statistical estimation of new contacts. ORION makes use of autoregressive moving average (ARMA) stochastic processes for best contact prediction and geographical coordinates for optimal greedy data packet forwarding. Simulation results have demonstrated that ORION outperforms other existing DTN routing protocols such as PRoPHET in terms of end-to-end delay, packet delivery ratio, hop count, first packet arrival and queues occupancy.

The efficient movement of ambulances is crucial for timely response and effective emergency management in urban areas. However, congested road networks often impede their progress, leading to potentially life-threatening delays. It presents an innovative solution: an automated traffic system for emergency vehicles utilizing RF (Radio Frequency) modules. By harnessing RF technology, this system enables seamless communication and coordination betweenambulances and the road infrastructure. Real-time vehicle identification, intelligent traffic management algorithms, and enhanced safety measures are key features of this system. By dynamically managing traffic flow, optimizing signal timings, and granting priority access to ambulances, the system minimizes response times while minimizing disruption to regular traffic. Moreover, the integration of RF modules paves the way for future advancements, including predictive routing and adaptive traffic management. The implementation of this automated traffic system holds immense potential to revolutionize emergency response, enhance road safety, and save lives in our increasingly complex urban environments. © 2024 IEEE.
