The problematic addressed in this article is dealing with the improvement of retrieval in Case-Based Reasoning for system design. The retrieval activity is based on the evaluation of similarities between requirements (target) and the solutions (sources). However, similarities between features is often a subjective kind of knowledge difficult to formalize within companies. Based on an ontology of domain, the approach permits to retrieve compatible solutions rather than similar ones using a model of designer preferences. The requirements are modeled by means of constraints. When constraints are confronted to solutions in order to evaluate a compatibility measure, missing information within solutions with regard to requirements are taken into account using semantic similarities between concepts. A case study validates the proposals.

An increasing number of websites, such as Trip Advisor, reflecting the multilateral nature of their products, provide visitors with the possibility to evaluate each item on more than one criterion. The rating scale used usually is represented by a lexical or symbolic scale, such as the five-star rating system. Such scales can be regarded as interval because the symbolic or lexical semantics convey information about the strength of user preferences in addition to their order. In this paper we present I-Rec, a new multi-criteria, model-based recommender system tailored to interval scale ratings, which provides improved results over similar state of the art multi-criteria methods.

The integration of customer preferences is nowadays a challenge in new product development. In this paper, we describe a method which integrates the customer preferences for the design of geometrical forms. We illustrate the approach by the design of a car's headlight. From a product space, the method is based on the definition of a perceptual space, built by multidimensional scaling, and which lead to the definition of interpretable perceptual dimensions. Objective measures of the form, computed from the design variables of the design model, are selected to interpret the perceptual dimensions. These measures are representative of the overall form and of the curvature variations. At this level, the Fourier coefficients of a closed curve are used to represent the information on the curvature variations. Next, from the preferences of a customer, the target values of the selected measures corresponding to a preference optimum are calculated. We show in the paper the interest of this approach for the design of forms. The method is illustrated by the design of a car's headlight, modeled by Bezier curves and integrated in a front-end.

In this paper we present a general framework for the comparison of intervals when preference relations have to established. The use of intervals in order to take into account imprecision and vagueness in handling preferences is well known in the literature, but a general theory on how such models behave is lacking. In the paper we generalize the concept of interval (allowing the presence of more than two points). We then introduce the structure of the framework based on the concept of relative position and component set. We provide an exhaustive study of 2-point and 3-point intervals comparison and show the way to generalize such results to n-point intervals. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Two of the primary measures that characterize the concept of disaster resilience are the initial impact of a disaster event and the subsequent time to recovery. This paper presents a new analytic approach to representing the relationship between these two characteristics by extending a multi-dimensional approach for predicting resilience into a technique for fitting the resilience function to the preferences and priorities of a given decision maker. This allows for a more accurate representation of the perceived value of different resilience scenarios to that individual, and thus makes the concept more relevant in the context of strategic decision making. We develop comparative results for ratio-based efficiency analysis (REA) based on the decision-making units' (DMUs') relative efficiencies over sets of feasible weights that characterize preferences for input and output variables. Specifically, we determine (i) ranking intervals, which indicate the best and worst efficiency rankings that a DMU can attain relative to other DMUs;(ii) dominance relations, which show what other DMUs a given DMU dominates in pairwise efficiency comparisons;and (iii) efficiency bounds, which show how much more efficient a given DMU can be relative to some other DMU or a subset of other DMUs. Unlike conventional efficiency scores, these results are insensitive to outlier DMUs. They also show how the DMUs' efficiency ratios relate to each other for all feasible weights, rather than for those weights only for which the data envelopment analysis (DEA) efficiency score of some DMU is maximized. We illustrate the usefulness of these results by revisiting reported DEA studies and by describing a recent case study on the efficiency comparison of university departments.

Most current approaches in the evolutionary multiobjective optimization literature concentrate on adapting an evolutionary algorithm to generate an approximation of the Pareto frontier. However, finding this set does not solve the problem. The decision-maker still has to choose the best compromise solution out of that set. Here, we introduce a new characterization of the best compromise solution of a multiobjective optimization problem. By using a relational system of preferences based on a multicriteria decision aid way of thinking, and an outranked-based dominance generalization, we derive some necessary and sufficient conditions which describe satisfactory approximations to the best compromise. Such conditions define a lexicographic minimum of a bi-objective optimization problem, which is a map of the original one. The NOSGA-II method is a NSGA-II inspired efficient way of solving the resulting mapped problem. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

MACBETH 2-additive is the generalization of the Choquet integral to the MACBETH approach, a MultiCriteria Decision Aid method. In the elicitation of a 2-additive capacity step, the inconsistencies of the preferential information, given by the Decision Maker on the set of binary alternatives, is tested by using the MOPI conditions. Since a 2-additive capacity is related to all binary alternatives, this inconsistencies checking can be more complex if the set of alternatives is very large. In this paper, we show that it is possible to limited the test of MOPI conditions to the only alternatives used in the preferential information.

Many engineering and marketing tools exist to help a designer optimize quantitative attributes of a product, such as height, weight, volume, or cost. However, these methods cannot effectively take into consideration attributes for which there is a significant interaction between the product attributes with respect to the consumer's preference, such as aesthetics. This research has begun the work of developing this necessary functional relationship for product attribute interactions and has created a methodology for further research. To accomplish this, this study considered consumer preference for product colors. Colors were represented by their red, green, and blue light components, and preference information for each of these attributes was gathered by presenting individuals with a small sample of colors, applied to backpacks, in a short choice survey.
