preference-based reinforement learning solves decision making based on human preferences. By deriving a reward function from human preferences, the agent's behavior aligns with human expectations, avoiding complex reward tasks. However, in preference-based reinforcement learning, a human teacher can only select one segment of trajectories from a pair, limiting reward function learning. Providing diverse trajectory segments can assist human teachers in better making a selection between two segments. To address this issue, a method is proposed to encourage the exploration of the reward model and thus promote generating more diverse trajectories. This encourages the exploration of the agent to provide a more diverse set of trajectories for the human teacher's selection. Numerical studies demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method over other preference-based reinforcement learning methods.

Bounds on the average and minimum attendance in preference-based activity scheduling

In this paper we study the preference-based activity scheduling problem, where based on preference sets of participants, activities need to be scheduled in parallel, such that participants can attend as many of their preferred activities as possible. The Activity Scheduling Problem (ASP) takes as input the activities, time slots, participants and their set of preferences, and is supposed to output an optimal schedule. Attendance is the number of preferred activities a participant can attend. We present two lower bounds on the average attendance over all participants, based on linearity of expectation. The first is a bound that involves the different parameters of ASP;we prove that this bound is tight. The second bound is such that no matter how many activities, participants, and time slots are included in the event, there is always a schedule that guarantees an average attendance of (1 - 1/e) of the preferred activities for the participants. A further result, based on applying the Lovasz local lemma to hypergraph coloring, presents a lower bound on the minimum attendance over all participants. We show that for various values of the problem's parameters this bound is better than a simple bound, although the simple bound may be tight for instances with a very large number of participants. Estimating Cost-Effectiveness Using Alternative preference-based Scores and Within-Trial Methods: Exploring the Dynamics of the Quality-Adjusted Life-Year Using the EQ-5D 5-Level Version and Recovering Quality of Life Utility Index

Objectives: This study aimed to explore quality-adjusted life-year (QALY) and subsequent cost-effectiveness estimates based on the more physical health-focused EQ-5D 5-level version (EQ-5D-5L) value set for England or cross-walked EQ-5D 3-level version UK value set scores or more mental health recovery-focused Recovering Quality of Life Utility Index (ReQoL-UI), when using alternative within-trial statistical methods. We describe possible reasons for the different QALY estimates based on the interaction between item scores, health state profiles, preference-based scores, and mathematical and statistical methods chosen. Methods: QALYs are calculated over 8 weeks from a case study 2:1 (intervention:control) randomized controlled trial in patients with anxiety or depression. Complete case and with missing cases imputed using multiple-imputation analyses are conducted, using unadjusted and regression baseline-adjusted QALYs. Cost-effectiveness is judged using incremental cost-effectiveness ratios and acceptability curves. We use previously established psychometric results to reflect on estimated QALYs. Results: A total of 361 people (241:120) were randomized. EQ-5D-5L crosswalk produced higher incremental QALYs than the value set for England or ReQoL-UI, which produced similar unadjusted QALYs, but contrasting baseline-adjusted QALYs. Probability of cost-effectiveness, <30 pound 000 per QALY ranged from 6% (complete case ReQoL-UI baseline-adjusted QALYs) to 64.3% (multiple-imputation EQ-5D-5L crosswalk unadjusted QALYs). The control arm improved more on average than the intervention arm on the ReQoL-UI, a result not mirrored on the EQ-5D-5L nor condition-specific (Patient-Health Questionnaire-9, depression;Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, anxiety) measures. Conclusions: ReQoL-UI produced contradictory cost-effectiveness results relative to the EQ-5D-5L. Objective: The aim of this study was to refine the items of a preference-based amyotrophic lateral sclerosis health-related quality of life scale (PB-ALS HRQL scale) based on domains generated in a previous study. Methods: Survey methodology was used to assess item importance rating (IR) and independence. Median importance was calculated for each item and a rating of "very important" was required for the item to remain. Correlations were used to examine item independence. Highly correlated items (r(s) > 0.7) were considered for removal. Cognitive debriefing (CD) interviews, conducted by Zoom, telephone, or email based on participant preference and communication needs, were used to identify potential issues. Participants provided feedback about wording, clarity, response options, and recall period on randomly selected items. Items were considered finalized when three sequential CD participants approved the item with no revisions. Results: Thirty-four people with ALS (PALS, n = 16 females;age range 44-78 years;ALS Functional Rating Scale-Revised [ALSFRS-R] range 0-48) in Canada completed the survey;a subset of 18 PALS completed CD interviews (n = 8 female;age range 44-71 years;ALSFRS-R range 0-48). Four items were highly correlated with one or more items, were not rated as very important, or were not approved via CD and were removed. Conclusions: The final four-response option PB-ALS Scale includes eight items: recreation and leisure, mobility, interpersonal interactions and relationships, eating and swallowing, handling objects, communicating, routine activities, and mood. The next step is to translate the PB-ALS Scale into French and develop a scoring algorithm based on PALS' preferences.

Individualized extreme dominance (IndED): A new preference-based method for multi-objective recommender systems

Recommender Systems (RSs) make personalized suggestions of relevant items to users. However, the concept of relevance may involve different quality aspects (objectives), such as accuracy, novelty, and diversity. In addition, users may have their own expectations regarding what characterizes a good recommendation. More specifically, individual users may wish to prioritize the multiple objectives in different proportions based on their preferences. Previous studies on Multi-Objective (MO) recommendation do not prioritize objectives according to the individual users' preferences systematically or are biased towards a single objective as in re-ranking strategies. Moreover, traditional preference based multi-objective solutions do not address the specificities of RSs. In this work, we propose IndED (Individualized Extreme Dominance), a new preference-based method for MORSs. IndED explores the concepts of Extreme Dominance and Statistical Significance Tests in order to define a new Pareto-based dominance relation that guides the optimization search considering users' preferences. We also consider a new decision making process that minimizes the distance to the individual user's preferences. Experiments show that IndED outperformed competitive baselines, obtaining results closer to the users' preferences and better balancing the objectives trade-offs. IndED is also the method that obtains the best performance regarding the most difficult objective in each considered scenario. (c) 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Objectives: Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMS) are widely applied to assess perceived health status. To date, no transplant-specific PROM is available for generating a single, standardized score regarding the health status of transplant recipients. The objective of this study is to generate health items for a new patient-centered PROM for organ recipients: the Transplant PROM (TXP). Study Design and Setting: A five-phase, mixed-method approach was applied to identify and select the health items: scoping literature review, expert meetings, focus-group meetings with organ recipients, a special judgmental task within an online survey, and expert meetings for final selection of health items. Results: based on a previously published scoping literature review, a first round of expert meetings, and a total of four focus-group meetings with kidney, lung, and liver transplant recipients (N = 18), a list of 83 relevant health items relating to post-transplant life was selected. In an online survey, 183 transplant recipients selected the 10 most important health items from this list. After evaluating the frequency of selected health items and combining items that assess closely related or similar concepts in the second round of expert meetings, nine health items were chosen to be included in TXP: fatigue, skin, worry/anxiety, self-reliance, activities, weight, sexuality, stooling, and memory/concentration. Conclusion: The nine TXP health items reflect the most prominent issues transplant recipients experience. The TXP can be administered by means of a mobile phone app. (C) 2020 The Authors. In the applications of real-life, the importance of having a flexible optimization algorithm is obvious. Commonly in these issues, Evolutionary Multi-Objective Optimization (EMO) algorithms and particularly Pareto optimization method as one of the most significant and useful classes have been used extensively. Often optimization algorithms that have used the EMO algorithm in their own as posteriori Decision-making (DM) algorithms, in weighted objectives problems, have suffered from the uniform prioritization of objectives. In this paper, we propose a lightweight angle-based updating Pareto front (PF) algorithm which considers the preferences of desired objectives expressed using the Favorite Region (FR). Actually, the FR has been created in the objective space according to the prior-fixed angle of priority objectives. Thus, the solutions in PF will be able to tend towards FR during the evolutionary process. Consequently, other solutions that are not in the favorite region will not go away, but the Fronts levels of solutions via an update process will change rearwardly. The updating process in Pareto method, during the evolution process, causes that the solutions in the first and second fronts lead to the exploration and exploitation of appropriate solutions in the favorite regions with uniform distribution for first Pareto Front, while the solutions' density in the undesirable region become impaired. The experimental results on benchmark multi-objective problems show that the proposed algorithm in addition to providing preference decision-making, by providing a tradeoff between convergence performance and computational complexity, can give the best convergence performance.

The problem of 3-Dimensional en-route airspace sectorization has been modelled as a multi-objective optimization by taking into account of conflicting air traffic controller workloads. In practice, air traffic controllers impose limits on these objectives, which may not be captured completely in Pareto front obtained using the multiobjective model. Hence, in this paper, we propose a preferencebased multi-objective optimization model for 3-dimensional enroute sectorization. Through the use of reference point(s), the proposed model is able to find multiple solutions that satisfy the air traffic controller preference(s) faster. Population-based NSGA-II has been used to solve the preference-based 3-dimensional enroute sectorization problem. The performance of preference based sectorization is evaluated using actual flight data from the Singapore regional airspace. The results are compared with conventional multi-objective optimization model which integrates the preference as a constraint. Results indicate that the preference-based model generally performs better than the constraint-based model. Further, multiple parallel runs of preference-based optimization could provide a greater variety of choices in airspace sectorization for the air traffic controllers.

Generating Utilities for the Château-Santé Base: A Novel, Generic, and Patient-Centered Health-Outcome Measure

Objectives: We have developed a new patient-centered, preference-based generic health-outcome measure, Ch & acirc;teau-Sant & eacute;Base (CS-Base), which is based on a novel multiattribute preference response (MAPR) measurement framework. This study aimed to generate a first utility set for the CS-Base, making it suitable for use in health-economic evaluations. Methods: CS-Base, making it suitable for use in health-economic evaluations. anxiety, pain, fatigue, social functioning, daily activities, self-esteem, and independence, each with 4 levels. Our methodology to generate utilities for the CS-Base was 2-fold. First, we derived coefficients from patient MAPR data to calculate CS-Base values. Subsequently, these were normalized to a 0.0 to 1.0 utility scale, in which 0.0 signifies dead. The dead position was estimated using general population data from a discrete choice experiment (discrete choice experiment + dead), using a division-value strategy, which localize the position of states better or worse than dead. Results: We analyzed MAPR data from 3222 patients and discrete choice experiment + dead data from 1995 respondents. All MAPR coefficients were negative, logically ordered, and significantly different from the reference level. The dead position was denoted by a division value of -148.385. Utility values spanned from -0.071 to 1.0, and only 53 of 16 777 216 states were deemed worse Conclusions: This study introduced the first CS-Base utility set, underlining a 2-step utility derivation method. This method, blending societal and patient views, surpasses traditional preference-based approaches, yielding firmer results. However, improvement of the normalization procedure is expected. Background: Assessment of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) is impaired by limitations of current patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). We developed the first cardiovascular disease (CVD) specific electronic PROM for which health items were derived by a fully patientcentered method. This paper reports on the measurement of HRQoL in CVD patients by a novel developed electronic patient-centred PROM based on a preference-based measurement model. Methods and results: In an earlier patient-based study nine health items were selected as most important to CVD patients. These items were assessed in the novel preference-based PROM of this study. CVD patients registered with a Dutch patient organization were asked to rate their health state. We compared HRQoL between subgroups of age, gender and CVD. A total of 554 patients participated in this study. The patient reported health items "worry", "self-reliance" and "sexuality" had the highest impact on HRQoL of CVD patients. Median HRQoL was better for men compared to woman (-17.04, IQR: 31.47 to -3.91 vs. -25.22;IQR: 42.06 to -9.53, p = 0.003). Best and worst HRQoL were observed in patients with an unknown or other CVD disease (-15.61, IQR: 28.52 to -3.91) followed by individuals with coronary artery disease (-16.99, IQR: 38.08 - 0.00) and heart failure (-24.27, IQR: 42.64 to -12.98). Conclusions: This novel patient-centred, preference-based, CVD-specific PROM accurately measures HRQoL by taking individual health preferences into account and tackling limitations of current PROMs. This PROM is therefore promising to evaluate interventions and optimize personalized therapies.
