Evaluation of probability distribution functions applied to tree diameter in a mixed uneven Kiker (Robinia pseudoacacia) stand of Kashmir Himalaya, India

probability distribution is of significance to predict tree distribution and estimate productivity in different ages as well as thinning out in forest stands to ensure optimized and stable stands. Statistical probability distributions, viz. lognormal, Weibull, exponential and gamma were used to fit tree-diameter data generated from the Manasbal forest stand of Kashmir Himalaya, India containing a heterogeneous population of trees with the objective to determine the best probability distribution of tree diameter. To estimate the parameters of the fitted distributions, the method of maximum likelihood was used. The various distributions were evaluated using different goodness-of-fit tests, viz. Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Cramer-von Mises and Anderson-Darling statistics, and the best distribution pertaining to the forest stand was ascertained. Lognormal distribution fitted the data well and could be used in modelling, planning and scheduling the forest stand in the study region.

Derivation of the probability distribution functions for succession quota random variables

The probability distribution functions (pdf's) of the sooner and later waiting time random variables (rv's) for the succession quota problem (k successes and r failures) are derived presently in the case of a binary sequence of order Ic. The probability generating functions (pgf's) of the above rv's are then obtained directly from their pdf's. In the case of independent Bernoulli trials, expressions for the pdf's in terms of binomial coefficients are also established.

Novel statistical-thermodynamic methods to predict protein-ligand binding positions using probability distribution functions

We present two novel methods to predict native protein-ligand binding positions. Both methods identify the native binding position as the most probable position corresponding to a maximum of a probability distribution function (PDF) of possible binding positions in a protein active site. Possible binding positions are the origins of clusters composed, on the basis of root-mean square deviations (RMSD), from the multiple ligand positions determined by a docking algorithm. The difference between the methods lies in the ways the PDF is derived. To validate the suggested methods, we compare the averaged RMSD of the predicted ligand docked positions relative to the experimentally determined positions for a set of 135 PDB protein-ligand complexes. We demonstrate that the suggested methods improve docking accuracy by as much as 21-24% in comparison with a method that simply identifies the binding position as the energy top-scored ligand position.

Concerns over the adverse environmental impact of conventional vehicles have led to cleaner and more efficient vehicle technology. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are the most promising approach to reducing petroleum use. While PHEVs partially rely on the electricity from the power grid, they raise concerns about their negative impacts on power generation, transmission, and distribution installations. The impacts of PHEVs on the power grid cannot be examined thoroughly unless extensive data on the utilization of each individual PHEV are available. For instance, in order to estimate the aggregated impact of PHEVs on the electricity demand profile, one needs to know i) when each PHEV would begin its charging process, ii) how much electrical energy it would require, and iii) what level of power would be available. Uncertainty regarding the above factors makes the researchers to come up with a series of probability distribution functions (PDFs). This paper extracts and analyzes the data that are available through national household travel surveys (NHTS). Based on 40,000 vehicle trips, probability distribution functions for arriving time and the required energy of PHEVs are extracted. Also, the probabilistic and deterministic PHEV charging load profiles are built and compared.

Saltating sand grains are the primary component of airborne sand and account for 75% of all transport flux of sand grains. Although they have been widely studied, the microscopic and macroscopic aspects of blown sand physics have not been united, and this has slowed development of this field. The main reason for this is that the bridge ( probability distribution functions for initial liftoff velocities of saltating sand grains) between the macroscopic and microscopic research has not been satisfactorily solved because it is difficult to measure the initial liftoff parameters of saltating sand grains and because the underlying theory is lacking. In this paper, we combined theoretical analyses with wind tunnel experiment data to describe the liftoff parameters of saltating sand grains (the horizontal, vertical, and resultant liftoff velocities and angles). On the basis of these data, the liftoff angles follow a LogNorm4 distribution function, whereas the horizontal, vertical, and resultant liftoff velocities follow a Gamma distribution function. We also demonstrated that it is feasible to colligate initial liftoff velocities of saltating sand grains obtained under different frictional wind velocities by different scholars in wind tunnel experiments and comprehensively analyze their distributions. Therefore the distribution functions of initial liftoff velocities of saltating sand grains presented in this paper do a good job of reflecting the underlying physics.

We demonstrate a fast and easy phase-error compensation technique based on statistical analysis of the wrapped phase distributions. The probability distribution functions (PDF) of the wrapped phase will become abnormal when there are nonlinear effects in a phase measuring profilometry. With the known iterative phase compensation algorithm, the most appropriate coefficients will be obtained by smoothing the PDF. The proposed method doesn't need more fringe images than the choosing three or four step fringe images as well as reference images. It can lead to a fast and easy phase-error compensation. Both computer simulation and experiment are carried out to demonstrate the validity of this technique.

Bioactive phytoconstituent millettone as a potential inhibitor of catechol O-methyltransferase: Implications for neuroprotective therapy in Parkinson's disease

Catechol O-methyltransferase (COMT) is a cation-dependent enzyme essential for the metabolism of catechols, including dopamine, norepinephrine, caffeine, and estrogens. COMT is highly expressed in tissues such as the brain, liver, and erythrocytes, and its elevated levels in dopaminergic neurons are implicated in Parkinson's disease. Considering it as a promising target for drug development against Parkinson's disease, this study employed in silico screening of plant-derived compounds from the IMPPAT 2.0 data base to identify potential COMT inhibitors. Compounds were initially filtered out based on their pharmacokinetic properties and binding affinities. Further screening included ligand–receptor interaction calculations, pan-assay interface compounds filtering, ADMET analysis, and biological activity prediction, followed by stability assessments to select the most promising phytochemicals. Millettone emerged as a top candidate, demonstrating high affinity and specific binding interactions with COMT. Comprehensive evaluations, including all-atom molecular dynamics simulations and essential dynamics analysis, further supported millettone’s stability and effectiveness as a potential COMT inhibitor. These findings suggest that millettone is a strong candidate for further experimental studies, with potential application as an anti-Parkinson's therapeutic targeting COMT. Significance Statement This study identified a plant-based natural compound, millettone, as a potential catechol O-methyltransferase inhibitor through in silico screening and molecular dynamics simulations. Its strong binding and stability suggest therapeutic potential for Parkinson's disease, warranting further experimental validation.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the uncertainty of 2πα and 2πβ surface emission rates using the windowless multiwire proportional counter *** study used the Monte Carlo method (MCM) to validate the conventional Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) method.A dead time measurement model for the two-source method was established based on the characteristics of a single-channel measurement system,and the voltage threshold correction factor measurement function was indirectly obtained by fitting the threshold correction *** uncertainty in the surface emission rate was calculated using the GUM method and the law of propagation of *** MCM provided clear definitions for each input quantity and its uncertainty distribution,and the simulation training was realized with a complete and complex mathematical *** results of the surface emission rate uncertainty evaluation for four radioactive plane sources using both methods showed the uncertainty’s consistency E_(n)<0.070 for the comparison of each source,and the uncertainty results of the GUM were all lower than those of the ***,the MCM has a more objective evaluation process and can serve as a validation tool for GUM results.
