Comparative analysis of Weibull parameters for wind data measured from met-mast and remote sensing techniques

The remote sensing techniques are gaining attention worldwide for the comprehensive assessment of wind resource in flat, complex, and mountainous terrain. This paper presents an attempt to increase the confidence on remote sensing technique to compute Weibull parameters at higher heights for assessment of wind energy resource. The measurement campaign was conducted at Kayathar, Tamil Nadu, India. The 10 min average time series wind speed data for the period of one month (September 2014) were recorded simultaneously at 80 m and 100 m using cup anemometer installed in the proximity of 120 m meteorological mast, Second Wind Triton SODAR (Sound Detection and Ranging) and Continuous wave wind LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). The data obtained from this measurement were analyzed and Weibull parameters were evaluated using nine different methods. The applicability of nine methods for calculation of Weibull parameters is analyzed based on statistical analysis i.e. Root Mean Square Error Test, Coefficient of Determination, Mean Absolute Percentage Error, and Chi-square Test for both measuring techniques. This study also shows the performance of remote sensing technology by comparing with result obtained from met mast. The outcome of this study is expected to encourage the deployment of remote sensing techniques at Indian sites. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Wind energy represents a clean,abundant and cost-effective power source,fostering job growth and environmental *** wind energy harnesses several gigawatts today,its availability hinges on diverse factors,with geographical location standing *** turbines,with varying capacity ranges,saturate the *** site-specific suitability and matching the appropriate turbine to meet specific requirements are of paramount *** study aims to assess the feasibility of wind energy in Surat,Gujarat,India and select an optimal small commercial turbine for residential *** research involves Rayleigh and Weibull probability distribution functions based on yearlong velocity *** distributions are fitted with actual data,revealing the most probable velocity(v_(mf)=3 m/s)and velocity at maximum power(v_(pmax)=5 m/s).The power availability of the site has been assessed as 42.6 W/m^(2)using both graphical and analytical *** commercial turbines have been shortlisted based on on-site power criteria and their specifications are evaluated against site power availability.A comparative analysis culminates in identifying the most suitable turbine for the *** best suitable turbine for the site with an annual energy yield of 8 MW has been suggested amongst selected turbines for small-scale residential applications.

This study uses novel evolutionary algorithms and computational techniques to analyze wind potential on flat, complex coastal, and offshore sites utilizing mast as well as remote sensing data. The wind data were recorded using remote sensing technique and conventional technique. The optimum Weibull parameters are estimated using nine methods. The genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization, and TLBO algorithms are compared and evaluated. The goodness of fit test, such as root mean square error test (RMSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), coefficient of determination (R-2), and chi-square test (X-2), is used to evaluate the accuracy of the selected methods. Parameter estimates are used to compute wind densities. The TLBO and PSO algorithms outperformed genetic algorithms in terms of efficiency. This research compares remote sensing measurements to cup anemometer measurements.

Charging management of plug-in electric vehicles in San Francisco applying Monte Carlo Markov chain and stochastic model predictive control and considering renewables and drag force

The charging management of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in San Francisco considering the effect of drag force on the vehicles, the real driving routes of vehicles, the social aspects of drivers' behaviour, the type of PEVs and the PEV penetration level is presented in this study. In this study, the drivers' responsiveness probability, to provide vehicle-to-grid service at the parking lot, is modelled with respect to the value of the incentive, drivers' social class and the real driving routes in San Francisco. Herein, the Monte Carlo Markov Chain is applied to estimate the hourly probability distribution function of the state of charge (SOC) of the PEV fleet in the day. The main data set applied in this study includes the real longitude and latitude of driving routes of vehicles in San Francisco, recorded in every four-minute interval of the day. In this study, a stochastic model predictive control is applied in the optimisation problem to address the variability and uncertainty issues of PEVs' SOC and renewables' power. Herein, quantum-inspired simulated annealing algorithm is applied as the optimisation technique. It is demonstrated that the type of PEVs, the PEV penetration level and even the social class of drivers can affect the problem results.

The effectiveness of nine different numerical methods is examined for calculating the parameters of Weibull distribution at three different heights 80 m, 100 m and 120 m to estimate wind power density. The measurement campaign was conducted at Kayathar, Tamil Nadu, India. The time series wind data were recorded using SecondWind Triton SODAR (Sound Detection and Ranging) instrument. Firstly, the fidelity assessment of SODAR measurement was examined. The aim of this study is to identify the more accurate method for computing wind power density of a selected region. The performance of the selected methods is judged based on goodness of fit test i.e. Root Mean Square Error Test (RMSE), Coefficient of Determination (R-2), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), and Chi-square Test (X-2). Wind power densities are estimated with the help of estimated parameter values. This study proposes an approach to utilize SODAR and also aims to examine the accuracy of SODAR measurement by comparing the results with cup anemometer, in an attempt to establish adequate criteria for an effective utilization of SODAR for wind resource assessment. Order parameter analysis of seismicity of the Mexican Pacific coast

The natural time domain has shown to be an important tool to obtain relevant information hidden in time series of complex systems not easily obtainable by means of standard analysis methods. By assuming that tectonism is a complex system and that earthquakes are similar to a phase transition, it is possible to define an order parameter for seismicity in the context of the natural time domain. In this work we analyze the statistical features of the order parameter (OP) computed for the seismic Mexican catalog spanning from 1974 to 2012. We found that in four out of the six regions the pdf of the order parameter fluctuations is similar with that earlier reported by other authors, but in two of these regions noticeable differences are identified. Also, except for Michoacan, the scaled pdfs analysis of all regions collapse on a universal curve with non-Gaussian tails. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Bidding analysis in joint energy and spinning reserve markets based on pay-as-bid pricing

Owing to the interaction between energy and spinning reserve markets, designing proper bid functions and offering optimal prices to these markets is economically a challenging task from generation companies (GenCos) point of view, especially in the pay-as-bid pricing mechanism. A previously presented only-energy bidding method is generalised in order to model and solve a multimarket bidding problem. Considering a joint probability distribution function for energy and spinning reserve prices, the bidding problem is formulated and solved as a classic optimisation problem. The results show that the contribution of GenCos in each market strongly depends on their production costs, GenCo's risk-aversion degree and the mean values of market prices.

Establishment Method of a Mixture Model and Its Practical Application for Transmission Gears in an Engineering Vehicle

Highly versatile machines, such as wheel loaders, forklifts, and mining haulers, are subject to many kinds of working conditions, as well as indefinite factors that lead to the complexity of the load. The load probability distribution function （PDF） of transmission gears has many distributions centers; thus, its PDF cannot be well represented by just a single-peak function. For the purpose of representing the distribution characteristics of the complicated phenomenon accurately, this paper proposes a novel method to establish a mixture model. Based on linear regression models and correlation coefficients, the proposed method can be used to automatically select the best-fitting function in the mixture model. Coefficient of determination, the mean square error, and the maximum deviation are chosen and then used as judging criteria to describe the fitting precision between the theoretical distribution and the corresponding histogram of the available load data. The applicability of this modeling method is illustrated by the field testing data of a wheel loader. Meanwhile, the load spectra based on the mixture model are compiled. The comparison results show that the mixture model is more suitable for the description of the load-distribution characteristics. The proposed research improves the flexibility and intelligence of modeling, reduces the statistical error and enhances the fitting accuracy, and the load spectra complied by this method can better reflect the actual load characteristic of the gear component.

Study of several probability distribution functions for the Klein-Kramers equation

In this paper, we take variable separation method to study Klein-Kramers (KK) equation. By choosing different eigenvalues and noise functions, we can get different probability density functions (PDFs) of KK equation. These PDFs contain not only normal distributions but also other distributions that correspond to anomalous diffusion phenomena. For example, power-law distribution, truncated Cauchy-Lorentz distribution, Weibull distribution, log-logistic distribution, Gamma distribution. We also show the 3D and 2D profiles of these PDFs to analyze the corresponding dynamic properties and illustrate the possible practical applications of these results. In addition, we also find some exact solutions that are not PDFs. They are also listed to ensure the completeness of the results and to illustrate the potential applications of these exact solutions.

Global precipitation is monitored from a variety of platforms including spaceborne, ground-, and ocean-based platforms. Intercomparisons of these observations are crucial to validating the measurements and providing confidence for each measurement technique. probability distribution functions of rain rates are used to compare satellite and ground-based radar observations. A preferred adjustment technique for improving rain rate distribution estimates is identified using measurements from ground-based radar and rain gauges within the coverage area of the radar. The underwater measurement of rainfall shows similarities to radar measurements, but with intermediate spatial resolution and high temporal resolution. Reconciling these different measurement techniques provides understanding and confidence for all of the methods.
