This paper introduces a novel distributed particle filtering algorithms for the blind equalization of frequency-selective channels in a setup where a single transmitter broadcasts to multiple remote receivers. The algorithm computes particle-independent non-parametric approximations of some posterior probability functions, which are propagated between nodes via minimum-consensus iterations. We verify via numerical simulations that the proposed algorithms exhibit bit error rate (BER) performances markedly superior to that of particle-filtering-based isolated receivers with communication requirements far inferior to that of previous distributed algorithms.

Modeling broken characters recognition as a set-partitioning problem

This paper presents a novel technique for recognizing broken characters found in degraded text documents by modeling it as a set-partitioning problem (SPP). The proposed technique searches for the optimal set-partition of the connected components by which each subset yields a reconstructed character. Given the non-linear nature of the objective function needed for optimal set-partitioning, we design an algorithm that we call Heuristic Incremental Integer Programming (HIIP). The algorithm employs integer programming (IP) with an incremental approach using heuristics to hasten the convergence. The objective function is formulated as probability functions that reflect common OCR measurements - pattern resemblance, sizing conformity and distance between connected components. We applied the HIIP technique to Thai and English degraded text documents and achieved accuracy rates over 90%. We also compared HIIP against three competing algorithms and achieved higher comparative accuracy in each case. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Mode transition in magnetic pole enhanced inductively coupled argon plasmas

The electrical probe (Langmuir probe) diagnostics of different plasma parameters and operation regimes (E/H modes) of magnetic pole enhanced, inductively coupled (MaPE-ICP) argon plasmas are investigated. It is shown that uniform, high density (n(e) similar to 10(12) cm(-3)) and low electron temperature (T-e similar to 1.5 eV) plasma can be produced in low pressure argon discharges at a low power (100 W). It is found that an MaPE-ICP reactor operates in two different modes;capacitive (E mode) and inductive (H mode). No density jump or hysteresis are reported between these modes. The effect of pressure on transition power, where the mode changes from E to H mode at 20 sccm gas flow rate are studied and it is found that for all pressures tested (similar to 7.5 mTorr to 75 mTorr) the transition power remains same. In the inductive mode, the above plasma parameters show a smooth variation with increasing filling gas pressure at fixed power. The intensity of the emission line at 750.4 nm due to 2p(1) --> 1s(2) (Paschen's notation) transition, closely follows the variation of n(e) with RF power and filling gas pressure. Measured electron energy probability function (EEPF) shows that electron occupation mostly changes in the high-energy tail, which enlightens close similarity of the 750.4 nm argon line to electron number density (n(e)). The behaviour of the electron energy probability function (EEPF) with regard to pressure and RF power in two operational modes is presented.

Transformation of evidence to knowledge: a neglected task within the medical profession

A common and far-reaching fallacy among physicians is to believe that the terms evidence and knowledge mean the same thing. Evidence means the result(s) of research, whereas knowledge stands for “true justifiable belief.” This difference becomes obvious when we take a look at the results from different studies on the same issue. Results of studies on the same issue sometimes vary considerably and make it difficult for the physician to know which results are relevant for the patient sitting or lying in front of him. Two examples for illustration; within the last ten years about 600 studies evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of D-Dimer in the diagnosis of venous thrombosis have been published and the values for the sensitivity of the test varies between 70% and 98%. Trial results reporting the effect of steroids on survival in patients with septic shock differ between no effect at all and a significant reduction of mortality. Which of these results should physicians trust? As a consequence the transformation of evidence to knowledge, including the handling of varying and partially contradictory results, could and should be one of the main tasks of academic medicine. The transformation of evidence to knowledge makes the results from research applicable to daily practice. An attempt to accomplish this demand is to synthesize the results of various primary studies in systematic reviews with meta-analyses. The efforts of the Cochrane Collaboration can be mentioned favorably, but some reservations against the assembly line like production of systematic reviews are justified. It is not understandable why primary studies of low methodological quality, rated as such by the reviewers, are still included in systematic reviews. Further, the concern that results from studies with very different patient populations are pooled in systematic reviews pertains. Microstructure, property and processing relation in gradient porous cathode of solid oxide fuel cells using statistical continuum mechanics

This paper investigates the relation between microstructure, macroscopic transport properties, and fabrication processing for a gradient porous cathode of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Functionally graded porous cathode with smooth variations in pore size is composed of lanthanum strontium manganite (LSM) fabricated on yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte substrate using a multi-step spray pyrolysis (SP) technique at various deposition conditions. Two-dimensional (2D) serial-sections of the gradient porous microstructure obtained by FIB-SEM are fully characterized using statistical correlation functions. Results of statistical analysis of the microstructures revealed that the SP processing technique is capable of generating statistically identical and homogeneous microstructures with smooth gradient in pore size resulting from changing the processing parameters. Strong contrast statistical approach is also used to predict the in-plane temperature dependent effective electrical conductivity of the gradient porous cathode and the results are compared to the experimental data. In this article we consider a two-person red-and-black game with lower limit. More precisely, assume each player holds an integral amount of chips. At each stage, each player can bet an integral amount between a fixed positive integer l and his possession x if x >= l;otherwise, he bets all of his own fortune. He might win his opponent's stakes with a probability that is a function of the ratio of his bet to the sum of both players' bets and is called a win probability function. The goal of each player is to maximize the probability of winning the entire fortune of his opponent by gambling repeatedly with suitably chosen stakes. We will give some suitable conditions on the win probability function such that it is a Nash equilibrium for the subfair player to play boldly and for the superfair player to play timidly.

Statistical continuum theory for the effective conductivity of carbon nanotubes filled polymer composites

The effective thermal conductivity of polymer nanocomposites filled with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is studied using statistical continuum theory. A three-dimensional isotropic nanocomposite samples with randomly oriented CNTs are computer generated and used to calculate the effective thermal conductivity. The CNTs orientation, shape and spatial distribution are taken into account through two-point and three-point probability functions. The effect of filler content is studied by considering samples with filler contents vary form 1 to 10 wt%. The predicted effective conductivity is compared to our experiment, where the polymer matrix is taken to be poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) filled with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Relative to the pure poly(methyl methacrylate) both the modeling and the experiment show an increase of the thermal conductivity as function of the MWCNTs volume fraction. However, the predicted results overestimate the experimental data, which might due the CNTs agglomerations. Therefore, the predicted effective conductivities have been compared to experimental results in order to estimate the volume fraction of CNT agglomeration. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Projection of atomistic simulation data for the dynamics of entangled polymers onto the tube theory: calculation of the segment survival probability function and comparison with modern tube models

State-of-the-art tube models for the dynamics of entangled polymer melts are usually validated on the basis of the agreement of their predictions for the linear viscoelastic properties (LVE data) of the system against experimentally measured data. We present here a more direct and fundamental test of these models based on their comparison against molecular dynamics (MD) simulation data for the dynamics of primitive paths (PPs) in the system under study. More precisely, we show how one can take advantage of a recently developed computational methodology (P. S. Stephanou, C. Baig, G. Tsolou, V. G. Mavrantzas and M. Kroger, J. Chem. Phys., 2010, 132, 124904) for calculating the most important function of all tube models, the segment survival probability psi(s, t) and its average Psi(t) (the overall tube survival probability), by projecting MD data of atomistically detailed samples onto the level of the primitive paths, to directly probe mechanisms proposed for chain relaxation, such as contour length fluctuation (CLF) and constraint release (CR). The simulation data for psi(s, t) and Psi(t) can be used next to evaluate refinements of the original Doi-Edwards reptation theory based on a modified diffusion equation for psi(s, t) incorporating the terms proposed to account directly or indirectly for these effects (CLF and CR). The functions psi(s, t) and Psi(t) determined directly from the atomistic MD simulation data account automatically for all these relaxation mechanisms, as well as for any other mechanism present in the real melt. We present and discuss results from such an approach referring to model, strictly monodisperse cis- and trans-1,4-polybutadiene and polyethylene melts containing on average up to 6 entanglements per chain, simulated in full atomistic detail for times up to a few microseconds (that is, comparable to the chain disentanglement time tau(d)). We deal with an image jigsaw puzzle problem, which is defined as reconstructing an image from a set of square and non-overlapping image patches. It is known that a general instance of this problem is NP-complete, and it is also challenging for humans, since in the considered setting the original image is not given. Recently a graphical model has been proposed to solve this and related problems. The target label probability function is then maximized using loopy belief propagation. We also formulate the problem as maximizing a label probability function and use exactly the same pairwise potentials. Our main contribution is a novel inference approach in the sampling framework of Particle Filter (PF). Usually in the PF framework it is assumed that the observations arrive sequentially, e.g., the observations are naturally ordered by their time stamps in the tracking scenario. Based on this assumption, the posterior density over the corresponding hidden states is estimated. In the jigsaw puzzle problem all observations (puzzle pieces) are given at once without any particular order. Therefore, we relax the assumption of having ordered observations and extend the PF framework to estimate the posterior density by exploring different orders of observations and selecting the most informative permutations of observations. This significantly broadens the scope of applications of the PF inference. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed inference framework significantly outperforms the loopy belief propagation in solving the image jigsaw puzzle problem. In particular, the extended PF inference triples the accuracy of the label assignment compared to that using loopy belief propagation.

Consideration was given to the properties of the probability and quantile functions that are sufficient for effective solution of the stochastic optimization problems involving such functions. Presented were sufficient conditions for quasiconcavity (logarithmic concavity) of the probabilistic measure which is one of the two main conditions guaranteeing quasiconcavity of the probability function and quasiconvexity of the quantile function.
