probability-based horizontal fire spread scenarios in framed structures and data-driven prediction model

A fire scenario has a great effect on progressive collapse of structures and its selection is a key step for performance-based structural fire design. The randomness and complexity of realistic fire scenarios represented by fire spreading pose significant challenges for its quantitative selection. Existing studies based on unchanged fire ranges may be over-conservative or unsafe. This paper proposes a probability-based model to determine multi-room fire spreading scenarios in framed office buildings. A framed model with 4 x 4 spans is created in Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), and the effect of room dimensions, fire source locations, fire load densities and opening factors is investigated. The typical and dangerous spreading paths are quantitatively identified. A Back Propagation (BP) neural network is developed for the first time to accurately predict the horizontal spreading path and time of multi-room fires, based on optimization through whale optimization algorithm (WOA), adaptive inertia weight (I), chaotic mapping (C) and Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE). It is found that: (1) the room dimension, opening size and combustible density have a significant impact on the spreading path, and the location of fire sources greatly affects the spread speed. (2) One typical fire spread path with a probability of 14 % is identified for the corner and middle fire source, respectively. Four dangerous fire spread paths are found by considering coupled characteristics of rapid spread speed, high room temperatures and large number of fire-affected rooms. These quantified fire spreading scenarios (path, speed and time) can be directly used in structural fire design codes. (3) The optimized C-IWOA-BP neural network has a high accuracy (errors within 5 %) for predicting fire spreading paths and time, providing an efficient tool for fire emergency responses and early warning of structural collapse.

A probabilistic stress-strain relationship model for steel bars including the non-uniform corrosion effects in chloride environments

An accelerated corrosion test followed by a monotonic tensile test was conducted on 66 groups of steel bar specimens with varying design parameters and the effects of key factors such as corrosion levels, steel bar diameters and corrosion conditions on the non-uniform corrosion and mechanical properties of the steel bars were analyzed emphatically. based on the test results and probability theory, the non-uniformity of corrosion for corroded steel bars was statistically analyzed, and a probability model of stress-strain relationship of corroded steel bars considering the influences of non-uniform corrosion was further established. The findings indicated that there is non-uniform corrosion along the length of corroded steel bars, which led to irregular corrosion pits on the surface of steel bars. The non-uniformity of corrosion in small-diameter steel bars varies under different corrosion conditions, whereas large-diameter steel bars show little variation in non-uniformity of corrosion across various conditions. The degradation of mechanical properties of steel bars is most notably influenced by the corrosion levels, while the influences of corrosion conditions and the diameters of steel bars on the degradation of the mechanical properties are relatively insignificant. The proposed probability-based model, including the uncertainty effects triggered by the non-uniformity of corrosion, can effectively predict the stress- strain relationship of corroded steel bars based on specified probability requirements.

Terrain Simplification Algorithm in Radio Wave Propagation Prediction

Due to the diversity of landforms, an appropriate threshold should be selected for the simplification of different landforms. The distribution of simplified index was obtained by preprocessing the terrain data, and the distribution was used as a reference for threshold selection. In order to study the influence of terrain simplification on the prediction of complex electromagnetic environment, a visibility algorithm used in the regular model of terrain and a probability-based power propagation model are proposed. The visibility algorithm used in the regular model of terrain is based on the relationship between planes and triangular planes in three-dimensional space. The visible triangular surfaces and the corresponding visible area of the triangular surfaces in the terrain can be calculated with the visibility algorithm. The probability-based power propagation model uses the results of the visibility algorithm to calculate the propagation probability and calculates the change of receiver power in combination with the radio wave propagation characteristics. The spatial visibility algorithm and the probability-based power propagation model can be applied to the complex electromagnetic environment to analyze the influence of terrain simplification on prediction accuracy. The minimum error between the simulation result of the probability-based power propagation model and the Wireless InSite simulation result is 0.5018dB, and the average error is 1.5039dB.

Detection of Elusive Rogue Wave with Cross-Track Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar Imaging Approach

Rogue waves are reported to wreck ships and claim lives. The prompt detection of their presence is difficult due to their small footprint and unpredictable emergence. The retrieval of sea surface height via remote sensing techniques provides a viable solution for detecting rogue waves. However, conventional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques are ineffective at retrieving the surface height profile of rogue waves in real time due to nonlinearity between surface height and normalized radar cross-section (NRCS), which is not obvious in the absence of rogue waves. In this work, a cross-track interferometric SAR (XTI-SAR) imaging approach is proposed to detect elusive rogue waves over a wide area, with sea-surface profiles embedding rogue waves simulated using a probability-based model. The performance of the proposed imaging approach is evaluated in terms of errors in the position and height of rogue-wave peaks, the footprint area of rogue waves, and a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the sea-surface height profile. Different rogue-wave events under different wind speeds are simulated, and the reconstructed height profiles are analyzed to determine the proper ranges of look angle, baseline, and mean-filter size, among other operation variables, in detecting rogue waves. The proposed approach is validated by simulations in detecting a rogue wave at a spatial resolution of 3 m x 3 m and height accuracy of decimeters.

probability of Winning the Tender When Proposing Using BIM Strategy: A Case Study in Saudi Arabia

The procurement process is one of the most important phases in any project life cycle, particularly when it comes to selecting the right contractor for the job. Awarding the contract to the best bid proposal is a critical step to ensure the greatest value. BIM has been recognized as not only a geometric modelling of buildings, but also, it facilitates the different stages in management of construction projects. The purpose of this paper is to study the impact of using Building Information modeling (BIM) in the tendering process from the contractor's perspective, based on a probability model able to predict winning probability, regardless of relative weight. The main objective of this research is to measure the likelihood of winning a tender in the case of implementing BIM strategy, compared with contractors who do not use BIM. The research uses a literature review, surveys, and interviews with experts to develop a model that predicts the probability of winning a contract;this is determined by measuring the BIM impact on each selection criterion in a multicriteria selection process using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to develop a probability-based model. The results of the survey and the interview show that BIM strategy has a variant influence on the score the contractor could have on each of them raising the probability of winning the tender. The main result of this paper is the property-based model, which is able to predict BIM winning probability regardless of relative weight, which can be applied in any country. Nonetheless, the Saudi case study shows that utilizing BIM when proposing could increase the winning probability by up to 9.42% in the case of Quality-based Selection (QBS), and to 5.5% in the case of Cost-based Selection (CBS).

Analysis of Hardwood Lumber Grade Yields Using Monte Carlo Simulation

The goal of this study was to develop a lumber grade yield prediction model with a probability-based technique known as the Monte Carlo simulation. The data to develop the prediction model was taken from an existing lumber grade yield database developed from red oak logs sawn at the Appalachian region of the United States. Statistical input analysis techniques were used to fit the lumber grade yields to hypothesized probability distributions. Inverse cumulative probability function distributions were developed from the fitted probability distributions to simulate and predict lumber grade yields. The predicted gross revenue was compared with the actual gross revenue and against the gross revenue predicted by a multiple linear regression (MLR) model. The predicted gross revenue using the Monte Carlo simulation had a 0.88% absolute error compared with the actual gross revenue, while the predicted gross revenue from the MLR model had an absolute error of 3.31%. The higher prediction power of the Monte Carlo method was more effective when predicting lumber grade yields from individual log groups. The Monte Carlo model developed in this research can be easily implemented to quickly predict lumber grade yields or gross revenue to support procurement, log inventory management, production, planning, and marketing operations.

Stochastic-based noise exposure assessment in modular and off-site construction

In recent years, modular construction has had remarkable growth in the construction industry resulting in many construction tasks being transferred from on-site to the indoor workplaces. Although modular construction has the advantage of improving productivity, the reduced noise on construction sites has just been transferred to the indoor workplaces along with the associated health risks. Studies have shown that exposure to excessive noise on construction sites can impact the health of workers. Hence, to control and mitigate the occupational noise risk, it is necessary to implement a noise risk assessment. This study proposes a framework to predict the noise levels with the support of probability-based modelling and simulating the acoustic conditions of the workplaces. The output of the model can provide the possibility of calculation of the workers' noise exposure during working hours. As demonstrated in a case study, the proposed framework is implemented in practice to identify the workers' noise exposure levels and determine the noise risk zones in a modular construction factory. Emerging technology in terms of hardware and software over wireless sensor network result in various applications The main limitation of sensor nodes are less life span, more energy consumption. Many papers has explained about the stochastic model but nothing came out well. This leads to the motivation of our research work by proposing fuzzy based semi morkov model. This proposed model is very apt for more power management in evebt driven condition. The performance analysis part shows that our proposed work contribute better life time performance.

Processing continuous K-nearest skyline query with uncertainty in spatio-temporal databases

Continuous K-nearest skyline query (CKNSQ) is an important query in the spatio-temporal databases. Given a query time interval [t (s) ,t (e) ] and a moving query object q, a CKNSQ is to retrieve the K-nearest skyline points of q at each time instant within [t (s) ,t (e) ]. Different from the previous works, in this paper we devote to overcoming the specific assumptions that each object is static in road networks and has the certain dimensional values. We focus on processing the CKNSQ over moving objects with uncertain dimensional values in Euclidean space and the velocity of each object (including the query object) varies within a known range. As the uncertainty is involved, such a query is called the continuous possible K-nearest skyline query (CPKNSQ). We first discuss the difficulties raised by the uncertainty of moving objects and then propose the CPKNSQ algorithm operated with a data-partitioning index, the uncertain TPR-tree (UTPR-tree), to efficiently answer the CPKNSQ. Moreover, we design a probability-based model to quantify the possibility of each object being the query result. Finally, extensive experiments using the synthetic and real datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and the efficiency of the proposed approaches.
