This paper describes work in progress of an electronic assessment project at the University of Sydney. The Faculty of Medicine has developed an online format for the Modified Essay Question (MEQ) written assessments used in its problem based learning (PBL) medical program. The MEQ is used to assess a student's approach to a problem, particularly their reasoning skills and understanding of concepts. The goals of this project include assisting students perform optimally in the MEQ assessment, implementing improvements to the efficiency of written assessment administration and enhancing the quality of feedback to students. Four trials of the online MEQ have now been conducted. Faculty and student feedback on all four trials have been very positive. Students have reported that they have more time to plan and draft their answers and that the electronic format is more motivating than using the traditional paper assessment format. Faculty staff have reported that the online MEQ reduces the burden of marking student answers, while also improving the provision of student feedback. This project is attempting to meet the assessment challenges faced by a medical school with large student enrolment numbers by efficiently assessing the application of knowledge and clinical reasoning in a PBL context.

This paper appraises the impact of problem based learning (PBL) implementations within the (2016-19) Erasmus Plus "Methods" Project (Modernization of Teaching Methodologies in Higher Education: EU experience for Jordan and Palestinian territory) which introduced a range of learning modalities into formal learning contexts in higher education settings in Jordan (4 Universities) and Palestine (4 Universities). The project was jointly led by the Universities of Jordan and Birzeit, Palestine and there were six European partner universities. The paper focuses on the impact of PBL approaches on learners and university teachers through an analysis of semi-structured group interviews with students and individual staff interviews across a range of courses in the arts and sciences within the Palestinian context. The results of this small-scale research study are presented within a thematic framework focusing on participation, collaboration, agency, knowledge creation, problem solving and identity modification. It explores how far the adoption of student-centred PBL designs can open spaces for the development of human agency and capabilities within an existing orthodoxy of practice in Higher Education Settings in Palestine. It locates these student-centred practices within the context of higher education under occupation and examines what contribution they make to developing individuals' capacity to act effectively for change within the power dynamics and limits of their context.

This paper is an attempt to develop a distance learning model grounded upon a strict integration of problem based learning (PBL), dynamic knowledge networks (DKN) and web tools, such as hypermedia documents, synchronous and asynchronous communication facilities, etc. The main objective is to develop a theory of distance learningbased upon the idea that learning is a highly dynamic cognitive process aimed at connecting different concepts in a network of mutually supporting concepts. Moreover, this process is supposed to be the result of a social interaction that has to be facilitated by the web. The model was tested by creating a virtual classroom of medical and nursing students and activating a learning session on the concept of knowledge representation in health sciences. Evidence-based medicine (EBM) has been the subject of controversy since it was introduced in 1992. However, it has yet to be critically examined as an alternative paradigm for medical education, which is how it was proposed. This commentary examines EBM on the terms on which it was originally advanced and within the context that gave rise to it, the problem-basedlearning (PBL) environment at McMaster University in the 1970s and 80s. The EBM educational prescription is revealed to be aligned with the information processing psychology (IPP) model of learning through acquisition of general problem solving skills that characterized the early McMaster version of PBL. The IPP model has been identified in the literature as discordant with an alternative, constructivist, model that emerged at Maastricht University in the Netherlands over the subsequent period. Strengths and weaknesses of EBM are identified from the standpoint of the underlying cognitive theories. Principles are proposed with which to guide an educationally viable approach to learning and teaching the valuable skills included within the original EBM formula.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the application of problem-basedlearning models compared to conventional learning models to improve students' problem solving skills in XI IPA SMAN 2 Labuapi This research is quasi-experimental, which used nonequivalent control group design. The population in this study were all students of XI IPAN SMAN 2 Labuapi in the academic year 2015/2016. The research sample consisted of two classes, namely class XI IPA 1 as an experimental class and class XI IPA 2 as a control class. The sampling technique used saturated sampling techniques. The instrument used to measure the ability to solve problems in the form of a description test. Data analysis techniques used the Anacova test for hypothesis testing and N-Gain to see the improvement of students' problem solving skills. Anacova test results found that there were significant differences between the variables involved in the study, while the average increase in students' problem solving abilities for the experimental class was lower than the control class. based on these results it can be concluded that the problem solving abilities of students taught with problem-basedlearning models do not have a higher increase compared to conventional learning.

This paper presents the initial insights from a study in which we explored the relation between computational thinking (CT) and problem-basedlearning in higher education. CT skills are increasingly recognized as a necessity to all lines of study, as they not only facilitate digital proficiency, but potentially also a sense of computational empowerment and an ability to take a critical and constructive approach to applying computers when solving complex problems. The distinct focus on higher education is routed in theoretical as well as empirically based challenges, as this particular group of learners for the vast majority have started their education in a mainly analogue learning setting, yet now face employments with a much stronger demand for digital competences. The discussions presented in this paper takes its point of departure in the Aalborg PBL-model.

This research has purposes to: (1) determine the effect of PBL on problem solving and concept understanding of high school students, (2) determine the effect of Concept Map on problem solving and concept understanding of high school students. This research was a quasi-experimental research. The population in this research were all students of grade X SMA N 6 Yogyakarta. The samples taken for this research were four classes of the X graders out of 7 classes. Testing of differences in the effect of applying various learning models using the one way ANOVA test. These results of the research indicated that 1) the PBL learning model has significant effect on the problem solving and concept understanding of the ecosystem material of high school students;2) Concept Map has significant effect on the problem solving and concept understanding of ecosystems material of high school students.

In response to the explosion in medical information, there have been considerable recent changes in medical curriculum development. The move to problem based learning (PBL) is, in part, a result of these changes. The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Sydney has exploited a WWW based intranet for the development, delivery, management and evaluation of it's problembased, graduate medical program (GMP). This system has been employed to develop the 72 medical problems that contribute to the first two years of the GMP. The activities of more than 400 members of the faculty have been coordinated using the intranet to develop the wide range of resources to support learning in the program. Daily management of the curriculum is also enabled using Web site posting of bulletins, e-mail and ongoing development of technology training. Coupled with the PBL problems is a formative assessment system that provides questions and feedback that cover the whole range of learning topics. Part of the student and staff evaluation is supported both informally and formally through the use of a 'Feedback' button on each web page and web delivered structured formal evaluations, respectively. In an educational environment, instructors would always think of ways to provide students with motivational learning materials and efficient learning strategies. Hence, many researchers have proposed that students' problem-solving ability enhances their learning. problem-solving ability plays an important role for users in dealing with problems that arise during their learning. In order to facilitate high quality performance, computer programmers have been trained to solve the problems they encountered. The purpose of this study is to design and develop an e-learning game-based environment integrated with problem-basedlearning strategies for college freshman majored in computer science.

problem/project basedlearning (PBL) is a highly effective student-centered teaching method, where student teams learn by solving problems. This paper describes an instance of PBL applied to digital library education. We show the design, implementation, results, and partial evaluation of a Computational Linguistics course that provides students an opportunity to engage in active learning about adding value to digital libraries with large collections of text, i.e., one aspect of "big data." Students are engaging in PBL with the semester long challenge of generating good English summaries of an event, given a large collection from our webpage archives. Six teams, each working with a different type of event, and applying three different summarization methods, learned how to generate good summaries;these have fair precision relative to the Wikipedia page that describes their event.
