SOAdapt: A process reference model for developing adaptable service-based applications

Context: The loose coupling of services and Service-Based Applications (SBAs) have made them the ideal platform for context-based run-time adaptation. There has been a lot of research into implementation techniques for adapting SBAs, without much effort focused on the software process required to guide the adaptation. Objective: This paper aims to bridge that gap by providing an empirically grounded software process model that can be used by software practitioners who want to build adaptable SBAs. The process model will focus only on the adaptation specific issues. Method: The process model presented in this paper is based on data collected through interviews with 10 practitioners occupying various roles within eight different companies. The data was analyzed using qualitative data analysis techniques. We used the output to develop a set of activities, tasks, stakeholders and artifacts that were used to construct the process model. Results: The outcome of the data analysis process was a process model identifying nine sets of adaptation process attributes. These can be used in conjunction with an organisation's existing development life-cycle or another reference life-cycle. Conclusion: The process model developed in this paper provides a solid reference for practitioners who are planning to develop adaptable SBAs. It has advantages over similar approaches in that it focuses on software process rather than the specific adaptation mechanism implementation techniques. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Living labs are innovation infrastructures within which software companies and research organizations collaborate with lead users and early adopters in creating participative strategies to define, design, develop, and validate new products and services that maximize the socioeconomic conditions of the partnership. For this kind of innovation cluster to succeed, it must implement effective practices to manage the collaboration. However, there is currently no process reference model for efficient practices to manage a living lab. A case study involving six living labs was carried out to create and validate a process reference model for living labs.

Task process reference model on elderly's lifestyle for cluttered homes of the elderly in Northern Thailand

The cluttered home conditions are a significant risk of falling in older people who spend most of the time in their house. Therefore, this study proposes new elderly's lifestyle task model (ELTM) with risk assessment method under scoping of the quality concept. The research was conducted in Sri Bua Ngern Village, Tha Sala District in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The basic activity of elderly lifestyle in the house was analysed, verified and validated into daily tasks. Then, the elderly risky lifestyle task of the cluttered home management was evaluated to find the maturity level. The maturity level in the elderly risky lifestyle task was increased by implementing 5S practice. This research exercise shows clearly that the ELTM reference model represents daily living tasks of the elderly in their own house. In addition, the five levels of maturity assessment can measure the elderly's capability in preventing the risk of falling.

process performance remains a key challenge in organizations. Improving processes can be guided by Capability Maturity models resting on processes that can be assessed. Several ISO standards propose process models for Management System Standards, such as ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO/IEC 27001, and project management proposes processes in ISO 21500. The ISO 31000 standard provides guidance for Risk management with a process approach and systemic perspective. This paper presents the approach for eliciting processes based on ISO 31000 as the main thread in a process reference model (PRM). This PRM integrates risk management dimensions with the selected ISO standards: ISO 9001, ISO 21500, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO/IEC 27001.

To support the transformation of system engineering from the project-based development of highly customer-specific solutions to the reuse and customization of 'system products', we integrate a process reference model for reuse- and product-oriented industrial engineering and a process reference model extending ISO/IEC 12207 on software life cycle processes with software- and system-level product management. We synthesize the key process elements of both models to enhance ISO/IEC 15288 on system life cycle processes with product- and reuse-oriented engineering and product management practices as an integrated framework for process assessment and improvement in contexts where systems are developed and evolved as products. A comprehensive management approach to improve quality and safety of medication management within a multisite health care organization is explored. The process-oriented approach integrates Business Ontology, Business Architecture and Business process Management to develop a reference model for medication management. The model includes one hundred and sixty-four individual processes categorized in four process areas and twenty-five process groups. The business artefacts and methodology used in the development of this reference model are also presented. These artefacts were created and validated through workshops and working group meetings. The developed methodology could be used to create a similar process architecture in other organizations and service areas.

As software is increasingly developed as part of an overall, often multidisciplinary system, traditional engineering approaches often reach their limits when faced with increasing complexity, variability, requirements, or cost and productivity pressure. Generally, reuse and product-orientation are considered promising approaches to tackle such challenges, but to fully exploit their potential require an effective product management function. Although established software process life cycle models acknowledge the importance of reuse, they do not consider appropriate product management practices, while established systems engineering life cycle models lack reuse as well as product management. - We therefore propose the integration of a process model proposal for software product management with one for enhancing system life cycle processes with reuse and product-orientation. The resulting model can be used as add-on to ISO/IEC 12207 and serve as a framework for process assessment and improvement in contexts where software is developed and evolved as a product and at the same time is part of an overall software-intensive system product.

In spite of growing interest for information security, the adoption of the international standard on information security management (ISO/IEC 27001) is still very low. This standard provides requirements to manage an Information Security Management System. We argue that this standard is too complex to be directly implemented by small structures such as SMEs. We thus propose a process model that aims to describe the processes involved in information security management and facilitate adoption. In order to do this, we reuse process model previously derived from ISO/IEC 20000-1, which is also a management system standard but developed for IT Service Management. In this paper, we determine the generic management system requirements and their corresponding processes by mapping the requirements from ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO/IEC 27001 standards. At last, we create the information security specific processes with the remaining ISO/IEC 27001. requirements, and we conclude with the possible uses of the process model.

We propose a process reference model for UX (UXPRM), which includes a description of the primary UX lifecycle processes within a UX lifecycle and a set of supporting UX methods. The primary UX lifecycle processes are refined into objectives, outcomes and base practices. The supporting UX methods are refined into related techniques, specific objectives and references to the related documentation available in the literature. The contribution of the proposed UXPRM is three-fold: conceptual, as it draws an accurate picture of the UX base practices;practical, as it is intended for both researchers and practitioners and customizable for different organizational settings;methodological, as it supports researchers and practitioners to make informed decisions while selecting UX methods and techniques. This is a first step towards the strategic planning of UX activities.

In some cases there is a need to compare similarities between different process models. For example, given two organizations that offer products or services with similarities, we would like to know how much they differ from each other. This paper aims at defining a method to create a process reference model, which can be adapted to heterogeneous organizations. In order to construct this, we propose a method using BPMN language and based on the value chain approach. This process reference model issued from heterogeneous structures could enable managers to achieve a more comprehensive and unified vision of their organizations, and promote a coherent monitoring of activities. This work presents a unified method of communication between managers and organizations as well as throughout the structures comprising the organization. It provides a basis to establish an alignment of different structures in term of goals and business process following two axes.
