Fuzzy Decision Support System for product quality prediction and production line status analysis based on processing parameter prediction

Product quality assessment in the production lifecycle rectifies defects in manufacturing/ packaging in any industrial scenario. Advanced algorithms and optimization methods improve quality prediction considering the processing parameters. This article introduces a Transient Fuzzy Decision System (T-FDS) to predict processing parameters impacting production quality. The proposed system accounts for the quality requirements to identify the line status across various processing parameters. In this process, the decision system identifies non-volatile and transient parameters that impact the end-to-end production quality. Such parameters are classified for their variations between actual quality requirements and the transient variation observed at the end of production lines. The parameters are monotonously classified by the fuzzy decision system using lower-order derivatives. Besides, the predicted quality-impacting parameters are rectified to ensure higher-order derivatives are obtained from the different production line intervals.

Evolution of cracks in laser powder bed fused AA2024 and its processing parameter dependence

Hot cracking is one of the most hideous issues in the fabrication of high-strength aluminum alloys via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). This study investigated the evolution of hot cracking in LPBFed AA2024 and explored its processing parameter dependence. Results showed that most cracks distribute along continuous eutectic phases residing at grain boundaries. At the last stage of solidification, the eutectic composition with low melting point exists as a liquid film, which can be easily ruptured under stress caused by thermal contraction. This leads to the formation of cracks along grain boundaries. This cracking process is also related to the misorientation angle of grains, where higher angle results in more stable liquid films. Furthermore, increasing the laser power transforms the grain structure from fine columnar grains to coarse columnar grains, which eventually transform to a mixture of columnar and equiaxed grains. This grain structure transition results in the decrease followed by increase of critical stress for the rupture of liquid film. On the other hand, decreasing the scanning speed increases the eutectic phase content, which could enhance the permeability of mushy zone and thus reduce the cracking susceptibility. These findings could provide guidance for the fabrication of crack-free high-strength aluminum alloys via LPBF.

Role of processing parameters on relative density,microstructure and mechanical properties of selective laser melted titanium alloy

Mg–3Nd–0.2Zn–0.4Zr(NZ30K,wt.%)alloy is a new kind of high-performance metallic *** combination of the NZ30K Magnesium(Mg)alloy and selective laser melting(SLM)process seems to be an ideal solution to produce porous Mg degradable ***,the microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of the SLMed NZ30K Mg alloy were not yet studied ***,the fabrication defects,microstructure,and mechanical properties of the SLMed NZ30K alloy under different processing parameters were *** results show that there are two types of fabrication defects in the SLMed NZ30K alloy,gas pores and unfused *** the increase of the laser energy density,the porosity sharply decreases to the minimum first and then slightly *** minimum porosity is 0.49±0.18%.While the microstructure varies from the large grains with lamellar structure inside under low laser energy density,to the large grains with lamellar structure inside&the equiaxed grains&the columnar grains under middle laser energy density,and further to the fine equiaxed grains&the columnar grains under high laser energy *** lamellar structure in the large grain is a newly observed microstructure for the NZ30K Mg *** laser energy density leads to finer grains,which enhance all the yield strength(YS),ultimate tensile strength(UTS)and elongation,and the best comprehensive mechanical properties obtained are YS of 266±2.1 MPa,UTS of 296±5.2 MPa,with an elongation of 4.9±0.68%.The SLMed NZ30K Mg alloy with a bimodal-grained structure consisting of fine equiaxed grains and coarser columnar grains has better elongation and a yield drop phenomenon.

Effects of processing parameters on creep behavior of 316L stainless steel produced using selective laser melting

The selective laser melting (SLM) method is being increasingly applied in the aerospace and power industries for the production of high temperature critical components. The effects of SLM processing parameters, such as laser power, scanning speed, and energy density on the creep properties were investigated for 316L stainless steel (SS316L). The effect of building direction was also studied. The creep resistance was influenced by the manufacturing direction. The vertical specimen demonstrated a longer creep life and higher creep resistance than the horizontal specimen. The creep resistance remained constant when the energy density was kept constant during manufacturing. If insufficient energy density was used for manufacturing, internal defects, such as voids and unmelt powder were generated, and lowered the creep resistance. However, if sufficient energy density higher than a minimum value was employed, the material creep properties mainly depended on the level of the energy density.

Hot deformation behavior and processing parameters optimization of SP700 titanium alloy

The Gleeble-3800 thermal simulator is used to perform isothermal and constant strain rate compression tests on SP700 titanium alloy under the conditions of deformation temperature of 700-950 degrees C and strain rate of 0.001-1 s(-1). The processing map technology can be obtained based on dynamic material model, through this technology, its thermal deformation behavior can be studied and the appropriate processing parameter range can be optimized by combining the changes in the strain rate sensitivity exponent m, strain hardening exponent n and deformation activation energy Q. The results show that the flow stress of SP700 titanium alloy is sensitive to deformation temperature and strain rate. When the strain is 0.9, the strain rate sensitivity exponent m is greater than 0.5 when the deformation temperature is 800 degrees C and the strain rate is 0.001 s(-1) and 1 s(-1). Under this condition, the SP700 titanium alloy may have superplastic deformed. In addition, the analysis shows that when the deformation temperature is 775-825 degrees C, the strain rate is 0.3-1 s(-1) and 0.001-0.002 s(-1), this condition is the best processing parameter range of SP700 titanium alloy. Effects of rolling-cutting processing parameters on micro-grooved strips forming

High heat flux density in the micro-electronics field urges the demand for functional surface for heat transfer. Micro-grooved surface is the classical heat transfer surface because of the larger specific area and better inducement of turbulence. A novel micro-grooved surface manufacturing process, the rolling-cutting process, is proposed to produce micro-grooved strips. Experiments are conducted to analyze the influence of processing parameters on the strips forming. The optimal combination of processing parameters is given to attain the micro-grooved strips with higher fins height and thinner base thickness. Additionally, the obtained strips are of three-dimensional structures with serrated bulges at the top. The difference between the material flow of serrated bulges and strip base is discussed, and the forming of serrated bulges is mainly due to inhomogeneous sinuous material flow.

Austenitic stainless steel (ASS) is a common material used in high-pressure hydrogen systems. Prolonged exposure to high-pressure hydrogen can cause hydrogen embrittlement (HE), raising significant safety concerns. Selective Laser Melting (SLM), known for its high precision, is a promising additive manufacturing technology that has been widely adopted across various industries. Studies have reported that under certain SLM manufacturing conditions and process parameters, the HE resistance of SLM ASS is significantly better than that of conventionally manufactured (CM) ASS, showing great potential for application in high-pressure hydrogen systems. Thus, studying the HE of SLM ASS is crucial for further improving the safety of high-pressure hydrogen systems. This paper provides an overview of the SLM process, reviews the mechanisms of HE and their synergistic effects, and analyzes the HE characteristics of SLM ASS. Additionally, it examines the influence of unique microstructures and SLM process variables on HE of SLM ASS and offers recommendations for future research to enhance the safety of high-pressure hydrogen systems. Numerical Investigation of the Impact of processing Conditions on Burr Formation in Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) Drilling with Multiscale Modeling

Burrs generated during the drilling of carbon fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRPs) would seriously reduce the service life of the components, potentially leading to assembly errors and part rejection. To solve this issue, this paper proposed a finite element (FE) model with multiscale modeling to investigate the formation and distribution of burrs at various processing conditions. The FE model comprised the microscopic fiber and resin phases to predict the formation process of burrs, while part of the CFRP layers was defined to be macroscopic equivalent homogeneous material (EHM) to improve the computational efficiency. A progressive damage constitutive model was proposed to simulate the different failure modes and damage propagation of fibers. The impact of strain rate on the mechanical properties of the resin and CFRP layers was considered during the formulation of their constitutive models. With this numerical model, the formation process of the burrs and the drilling thrust force were accurately predicted compared to the experimental measurements. Then, the burr distributions were analyzed, and the influences of the drill bit structures and drilling parameters on burrs were assessed. It was concluded that the burrs were easily generated in the zones with 0 degrees to 90 degrees fiber cutting angles at the drilling exit. The sawtooth structure could exert an upward cutting effect on burrs during the downward feed of the tool;thus, it is helpful for the inhibition of burrs. More burrs were produced with higher feed rates and reduced spindle speeds.
