Effects of processing parameters on processing performances of ultrasonic vibration-assisted micro-EDM

To improve the processing efficiency and precision of micro-holes with a large depth-to-diameter ratio on titanium alloy, ultrasonic vibration-assisted micro-electrical discharge machining (micro-EDM) is adopted. It could improve the effective discharge ratio in the machining process and promote the removal of erosion products. Compared with the non-ultrasonic vibration-assisted micro-EDM machining of a large depth-to-diameter ratio on titanium alloy, when the ultrasonic amplitude was 6 mu m, material removal rate (MRR) was increased by 2.4 times, relative tool wear rate (RTWR) was reduced by 65.8%, taper angle (theta) was reduced by 73%, and overcut (OC) was reduced by 32%. Based on the single factor experiment, this paper studied the influence rule and mechanism of processing parameters (pulse width, pulse interval, peak current, and ultrasonic amplitude) on the machining effect. Then, based on the orthogonal experiment, the optimization research on the processing technology of ultrasonic vibration-assisted micro-EDM was studied. The optimal processing parameter combination of MRR, RTWR, theta, and OC was obtained by signal-noise ratio (SNR) analysis. And regression analysis and analysis of variance were performed on the results, and the process models of ultrasonic vibration-assisted micro-EDM were established. The verification experiment proved the reliability of the single objective optimization result and the process model.

NC machining is currently a machining method widely used in mechanical manufacturing systems. Reasonable selection of process parameters can significantly reduce the processing cost and energy consumption. In order to realize the energy-saving and low-cost of CNC machining, the cutting parameters are optimized from the aspects of energy-saving and low-cost, and a process parameter optimization method of CNC machining center that takes into account both energy-saving and low -cost is proposed. The energy flow characteristics of the machining center processing system are analyzed, considering the actual constraints of machine tool performance and tool life in the machining process, a multi-objective optimization model with milling speed, feed per tooth and spindle speed as optimization variables is established, and a weight coefficient is introduced to facilitate the solution to convert it into a single objective optimization model. In order to ensure the accuracy of the model solution, a combinatorial optimization algorithm based on particle swarm optimization and NSGA-II is proposed to solve the model. Finally, take plane milling as an example to verify the feasibility of this method. The experimental results show that the multi-objective optimization model is feasible and effective, and it can effectively help operators to balance the energy consumption and processing cost at the same time, so as to achieve the goal of energy conservation and low-cost. In addition, the combinatorial optimization algorithm is compared with the NSGA-II, the results show that the combinatorial optimization algorithm has better performance in solving speed and optimization accuracy.

The effects of processing parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Fe-Mn-Cr-Mo-C PM steels are described. Pre-alloyed Astaloy CrM and Astaloy CrL, low-carbon ferromanganese and graphite powders were used as the starting materials. After pressing in rigid die, the compacts were conventionally and high temperature sintered at 1120 and 1250 degrees C, respectively. Sintering was carried out for 60 minutes in atmospheres with different H-2/N-2 ratios. Cooling rate from sintering temperature was 65 degrees C min(-1) (convective cooling). The specimens were subsequently tempered at 200 degrees C for 60 minutes in air. All specimens were tested for tensile strength (UTS), elongation (A), offset yield strength (R-0.2), transverse rupture strength (TRS), impact toughness and apparent surface hardness (HV 30). After mechanical tests the microstructure of Fe-Mn-Cr-Mo-C PM steels was studied by optical microscopy. These investigations have shown that, by sintering in inexpensive and safe nitrogen-rich atmospheres, it is possible to achieve mechanical properties similar to those of specimens sintered in pure hydrogen and hydrogen-rich atmospheres.

Correlation Between processing parameters in Direct Metal Deposition of IN625 Nickel-Base Superalloy

In the present study, the direct metal deposition (DMD) process was used to deposit the IN625 superalloy on the IN738LC substrate. The relationships between main processing parameters such as laser power (200-350 W), powder feed rate (40-220 mg/s), and scan speed (2-6 mm/s) with melt pool geometric characteristics (i.e., height, width, penetration depth, and dilution) were examined and discussed using linear regression analysis. The results showed;the melt pool height had a linear relationship with the P-3/4 center dot F-3/4 center dot V-5/6 combination parameter. Similarly, the penetration depth and dilution controlled by the P-0.3 center dot V-0.5 center dot F-0.6 combination parameter. These obtained empirical dependencies showed a high amount of correlation coefficient (R > 0.90). But, there is no clear relationship between the width of melt pools with the scan speed and powder feed rate. Actually, due to the balling phenomenon, the melt pool's actual width in these single tracks is unclear. During the DMD process, different defects such as gas porosity, lack of fusion porosity, and adhesion occurred. Fortunately, no crack was observed, and the minimum porosity was about 0.09%.

Optimization on processing parameters for Bi(Pb)-2223 superconducting tapes

Although there exists a large variety of thermo-mechanical procedures for preparing Bi(Pb)-2223/Ag tapes, primarily because of variation in precursor characteristics, the fabrication of long length Bi(Pb)-2223/Ag high-temperature-superconductors (HTSC) whether single-(SF) or multi-filamentary (MF) tapes, still requires the finesse of an optimizational approach on processing parameters, such as heat treatment, mechanical deformation, filament design, cladding materials and so on, to maximize the engineering critical current density (J(e)) and ultimately improve high field performance for applications. An outline for the small-scale processing of short-and lone-length HTSC SF and MF Bi(Pb)-2223/Ag tapes addresses these issues. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

Effect of pulsed electric field processing parameters on Salmonella enteritidis inactivation

Pilot scale continuous pulsed electric field treatment of liquid products was tested on the effects of energy input (0 < Q < 300 kJ kg(-1)), electric field strength (25 < E < 70 kV cm(-1)), square wave pulse width (0.05, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2 and 3 mu s) and initial product temperature (4 < T-INIT < 20 degrees C) on Salmonella enteritidis inactivation in a model solution composed of 28 mM sodium sulfate and 28 mM glucose. For Q = 0-100 kJ kg(-1) the decimal reduction number [DRN = log(N-0/N)] can be considered as linearly related to Q with the decimal reduction energy [Q(D)] varying between 44 +/- 3.2 kg(-1) for 0.05 mu s, 37 +/- 2.5 kJ kg(-1) for 0.1 mu s and 32 +/- 1.4 kg(-1) for 0.25-3 mu s pulse width. For Q = 0-300 kJ kg(-1), the relation between Q and log(N-0/N) was of power law type with the threshold energy level Q(0) = 9 +/- 2.6 kJ kg(-1) and the power coefficient 3.17 +/- 0.21. For Q = 65 kJ kg(-1) the increase of T-INIT by 6.6 ( +/- 0.7)degrees C raises the DRN by one unit. The same effect increased the products' electrical resistance by 16( 1.4) Q. For an overall treatment time of 1 mu s, the DRN is linearly related to E, with threshold (E-0) and decimal reduction (E-D) electric field strength: E-0 = 19 +/- 1.8 and E-D = 29.7 +/- 1.2 kV cm(-1) respectively. Neural network and regression modeling of extrusion processing parameters and properties of extrudates containing DDGS

Two sets of experiments using a single-screw extruder were conducted with an ingredient blend containing 40% DDGS (distillers dried grains with solubles), along with soy flour, corn flour, fish meal, vitamin mix, and mineral mix, with the net protein content adjusted to 28%. The variables controlled in the first experiment included seven levels of die size, three levels of moisture content, three levels of temperature gradient in the barrel, and one screw speed. The variables altered in the second experiment included three levels of moisture content, three levels of temperature gradient in the barrel, five levels of screw speed, and one die size. Regression models and neural network (NN) models were then developed using the data pooled from the two experiments to predict extrudate properties and extrusion processing parameters. In general, both regression and AN models predicted the extrusion processing parameters with better accuracy than the extrudate properties. Similarly, lower R-2 values for the regression results corresponded to lower R-2 values in the NN modeling. The regression models predicted the extrusion processing parameters using three and six input variables with R-2 values of 0.56 to 0.97 and 0.75 to 0.97, respectively. The NN models predicted the extrusion processing parameters using three, five, and six input variables with R-2 values (between measured and predicted values) of 0.819 to 0.984, 0.860 to 0.988, and 0.901 to 0.991, respectively. With the regression modeling, even though increasing the number of input variables from three to six resulted in better R-2 values, there was no decrease in the coefficient of variation (CV) between the measured and predicted variables. On the other hand, the NN models developed with six input variables resulted in more accurate predictions with reduced CV and standard error. This review assesses the information available on the effect of processing parameters on the behavior and operational stability of aerated immobilized viable cells bring used for synthesis. it highlights the problems of adequate oxygen supply and a need to develop new reactors via a rational approach to process design and operation. Magnesium alloys are considered one of the more promising materials for future use in many engineering applications. However, due to their high chemical and electrochemical reactivity, magnesium alloys have poor corrosion resistance in aqueous environments. Improving their corrosion resistance by coating can greatly extend their application. One promising coating method is plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). The nature of the coating formed, and the ultimate corrosion performance depends on the both the processing parameters (electrolyte, current density, current mode, processing time) and specific Mg-alloy substrate. In the present study, PEO coatings were produced on three different Mg-alloys (AJ62, AM60B and AZ91D) using different processing parameters. Scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the coatings. The corrosion resistance was evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in an aqueous 3.5% NaCl solution. Relationships are drawn between PEO processing parameters, substrate composition and corrosion performance. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data indicate that the bipolar PEO coated AZ91D Mg alloy demonstrates a higher corrosion resistance when compared to coated AM60B. AJ62 and pure Mg. Effect of processing parameters on the Interlaminar Shear Strength of Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Composites

The objective of this work was to improve the interlaminar shear strength of carbon fiber/epoxy composites by determining the effect on it of the processing parameters of the cured composites system, i.e., temperature, content of curing agent, and heating rate. Taguchi methodology and analysis of variance were applied for optimizing and statistically determining the significant factors that influenced the mechanical properties of the composites. It was found that the temperature and content of curing agent were equally the primary significant factors in controlling the interlaminar shear strength of the composites. Also, the correlation between water absorption and mechanical properties of the composites was investigated.
