Optimization of processing parameters for the synthesis of low-density polyethylene/organically modified montmorillonite nanocomposites using X-ray diffraction with experimental design

The influence of the processing parameters on the synthesis of low-density polyethylene (LDPE)/organically modified montmorillonite (OMM) nanocomposite films was studied using experimental design. Intercalation in the nanocomposites was analysed using X-ray diffraction and verified using atomic force microscopy. Four direct melt processing parameters were studied to obtain surface maps of intercalation in the nanocomposites: concentration of OMM (clay-%), concentration of Polybond (R) 3149 (compatibilizer-%), mixing temperature (Tmix) and mixing time. An ANOVA validated the polynomial function, and intercalation maps from response surface methodology (RSM) were obtained. The clay-% parameter had the most significant effect, and Tmix showed no significant effect on intercalation (p<0.05). A strong synergic interaction between clay-% and compatibilizer-% was observed, which is not possible to detect using univariate experiments. RSM provides a powerful tool for choosing the best processing conditions that lead to formulations with the highest intercalations by considering the main factors and their interactions. In this article, the weldability of dissimilar lap joints between 2 mm thick sheets of AA6022 aluminum (bottom) and AZ31 magnesium alloys (upper) was studied using a fiber laser with a wobbling scanner. The effects of laser beam wobbling parameters, laser power, traveling speed, and the presence of a pure nickel interlayer (similar to 0.1 mm thickness) is evaluated based on the microstructures and phases produced. The experimental results revealed dissimilar joint formation is highly dependent on inter-mixing, as well as fusion zone dimensions which control Al- and Mg-rich interaction zones that vary with laser power. Sound dissimilar joints were only produced by penetrating the Mg-rich interaction zone into the aluminum alloy. Joint formation benefited from suppression of Al-Mg chemical reactions using a Ni-interlayer, providing more well-dispersed and more benign phases compared to Al-Mg intermetallics at the interface during welding. The application of laser beam wobbling on a circular path with diameter of similar to 0.4 mm and frequency of 1000 Hz served to reduce cracks and enhanced materials intermixing.

The hot compressive deformation behavior of a new Ni-Cr-Co based P/M superalloy was studied in the temperature range of 950-1150 degrees C and strain rate range of 0.0003-1 s(-1) using hot compression tests. The effect of processing parameters on flow stress, activation energy, power dissipation eta maps and instability maps were investigated. The results show that the flow stress decreases with increasing temperature and decreasing strain rate. The apparent activation energy of deformation decreases while the values of eta in the peak zones increase with increasing strain, due to the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization. When the strain is 0.5, a domain with its peak eta of 40% occurs at 1050 degrees C and 0.0003 s(-1), which corresponds to dynamic recrystallization with grain size of ASTM 10-11 and can be as the optimum processing parameters for good workability. Decontamination of meat is commonly practiced to get rid of or decrease the microbial presence on the meat surface. Dielectric barrier discharge cold atmospheric plasma (DBD-CAP) as innovative technology is a food microbial inactivation technique considered in high regard by food scientists and engineers in present times. However, cold atmospheric plasma application is at the experimental stage, due to lack of sufficient information on its mode of action in inactivating microbes, food shelf-life extensibility, whereas, the nutritional value of food is preserved. In this review, we have appraised recent work on DBD-CAP concerning the decontamination treatment of meat products, highlighting the processing value results on the efficacy of the DBD-CAP microbial inactivation technique. Also, the paper will review the configurations, proposed mechanisms, and chemistry of DBD-CAP. Satisfactory microbial inactivation was observed. In terms of DBD-CAP application on sensory evaluation, inferences from reviewed literature showed that DBD has no significant effect on meat color and tenderness, whereas in contrast, TBARS values of fresh and processed meat are affected. DBD seems economically efficient and environmentally sustainable.

Effects of different processing parameters on laser water jet-machining silicon

Laser water jet processing is a new hybrid method developed on the basis of traditional laser processing technology. It combines high laser processing efficiency with the impact and cooling effects of water jets. Laser water jet processing can effectively process hard and brittle materials such as silicon. In-depth study of the processing technology has important practical significance. For this reason, the controlled variable method is used to study the influence of different processing parameters on groove depth. The research results show that with the increase of current and laser pulse width, the groove depth gradually increases;with the increase of laser repetition frequency and water jet velocity, the groove depth increases first and then decreases. The experiment of laser water jet processing silicon can provide guidance for processing other difficult-to-process materials in the future.

Injection-moulded α- and β-polypropylenes:: II.: Tensile properties vs. processing parameters

Resuming our comprehensive study, present Part II directs attention towards the effects of mould temperature and holding pressure on the tensile properties of neat and beta-nucleated isotactic polypropylenes. A commercial-grade of isotactic polypropylene was modified with a beta-specific nucleator. From both the original material (alpha-iPP) and the beta-nucleated material (beta-iPP), tensile test specimens were injection-moulded. Stress-strain measurements performed at room temperature revealed a positive influence of higher mould temperatures but negligible effect of holding pressure on the elastic modulus of injection-moulded specimens. It was suggested that at optimum processing conditions the elastic modulus of both alpha- and beta-iPP may be comparable. The softening effect of beta-form manifested itself in systematically lower yield stress values of beta-iPP as compared to alpha-iPP. The yield strain of both alpha- and beta-iPP decreased with the increase of mould temperature and the decrease of holding pressure. Prolonged solidification times at higher mould temperatures negatively influenced the strain at break of the specimens;the values of beta-iPP exceeded by several folds those of alpha-iPP. The stress at break of beta-iPP decreased correspondingly to strain at break. On the contrary, the increase of strain at break in a-iPP was followed by a decrease of stress at break. Al2O3-SiC composite powders were successfully fabricated from coal ash by carbothermal reduction reaction (CRR) method in argon atmosphere. The effects of raw materials ratio, reaction temperature, La2O3 and Sm2O3 additions on the synthesis process were investigated in detail. Phase compositions and microstructures of Al2O3-SiC composite powders were characterized by XRD and SEM. Proper processing parameters and rare earths addition amounts were determined, and the formation process of Al2O3-SiC powders was also discussed.

The Grey-Taguchi method analysis for processing parameters optimization and experimental assessment of 42CrMo steel treated by ultrasonic surface rolling

Static force, ultrasonic amplitude, feed rate, and rolling spacing parameters of 42CrMo steel treated by the ultrasonic surface rolling process (USRP) were optimized by the Grey -Taguchi method. Nine sets of experiments based on an orthogonal array design and grey relational analysis were used to obtain the optimum combination of mechanical properties for USRP. The influence of processing parameters on mechanical properties was investi-gated based on the grey relational analysis. The results indicated that the feed rate is the dominant parameter affecting the mechanical properties, followed by rolling space, ul-trasonic amplitude, and static force. The effects of plastic strain caused by USRP on the compressive residual stress and microhardness were investigated. The effects of the dislocation and cementite evolution on the mechanical properties were investigated to determine the origin of the best and worst mechanical properties. For the best mechanical property, the level and depth of distribution of compressive residual stress and tensile strain hardening capacity are the highest, which is benefited from the optimum synergistic of the elastic-plastic deformation, dislocation evolution, gradient distribution, and cementite evolution. For the worst mechanical property, a large amount of cementite is distributed within and around martensitic laths, increasing brittleness and the lowest comprehensive mechanical properties. These findings can provide a reference for accu-rately controlling the processing parameters of USRP and improving their mechanical properties.(c) 2023 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Influence of processing parameters on Residual Stress of High Velocity Oxy-Fuel Thermally Sprayed WC-Co-Cr Coating

Residual stress in high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) thermally sprayed WC-10Co-4Cr coating was studied based on design of experiment (DOE) with five factors of oxygen flow, fuel gas hydrogen flow, powder feed rate, stand-off distance, and surface speed of substrate. In each DOE run, the velocity and temperature of in-flight particle in flame, and substrate temperature were measured. Almen-type N strips were coated, and their deflections after coating were used for evaluation of residual stress level in the coating. The residual stress in the coating obtained in all DOE runs is compressive. In the present case of HVOF thermally sprayed coating, the residual stress is determined by three types of stress: peening, quenching, and cooling stress generated during spraying or post spraying. The contribution of each type stress to the final compressive residual stress in the coating depends on material properties of coating and substrate, velocity and temperature of in-flight particle, and substrate temperature. It is found that stand-off distance is the most important factor to affect the final residual stress in the coating, following by two-factor interaction of oxygen flow and hydrogen flow. At low level of stand-off distance, higher velocity of in-flight particle in flame and higher substrate temperature post spraying generate more peening stress and cooling stress, resulting in higher compressive residual stress in the coating.

Influence of processing parameters on disintegration of Chlorella cells in various types of homogenizers

The following bead mills used for disruption of the microalga Chlorella cells were tested: (1) Dyno-Mill ECM-Pilot, grinding chamber volume 1.5 L;KDL-Pilot A, chamber volume 1.4 L;KD 20 S, chamber volume 18.3 L;KD 25 S, chamber volume 26 L of Willy A. Bachofen, Basel, Switzerland, (2) LabStar LS 1, chamber volume 0.6 L of Netzsch, Selb, Germany, (3) MS 18, chamber volume 1.1 L of FrymaKoruma, Neuenburg, Germany. Amount of disrupted cells decreased with increasing Chlorella suspension feed rate and increased up to about 85% of the beads volume in the grinding chamber of the homogenizers. It also increased with agitator speed and number of passes of the algae suspension through the chamber. The optimum beads diameter was 0.3-0.5 mm in the homogenizers Dyno-Mill and LabStar LS 1 and 0.5-0.7 mm in the homogenizer MS 18. While the degree of the cell disruption decreased with increasing cell density in Dyno-Mill and LabStar, the cell disruption in the MS 18 increased. Depending on processing parameters, more than 90% of algae cells were disrupted by passing through the bead mills and bacteria count in algae suspension was reduced to about two orders.
