Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is classified into swarm intelligence algorithm. Focusing on the NC processing parameters optimization, this paper has made several improvements on PSO: dividing solutions into feasible and infeasible, then shrinking the infeasible solutions;dividing feasible solutions into inferior and non-inferior, then choosing the non-inferior solution with most domination solutions as the global best position for inferior solutions. It has shown a significant achievement in actual processing.

Numerical Simulation and parameters optimization of Invar 36 Alloy Multi-Pulse Femtosecond Laser processing

To explore the unclear processing mechanism and realize parameters optimization of Invar 36 alloy multi-pulse femtosecond laser processing, this paper establishes a two-temperature model for Invar 36 alloy multi-pulse femtosecond laser processing and determine the parameters of the model firstly. Then, a simulation model of Invar 36 alloy multi-pulse femtosecond laser processing is established based on COMSOL software and the effectiveness of the simulation model is verified by experiments. Temperature distribution and multi-pulse ablation mechanism based on process simulation are investigated, with pulse repetition rate f, pulse energy density F, pulse number n and pulse width tp as influencing factors, and ablation rate and melting resolidification zone (MRZ) range as responses. Four factors and five levels center composite design (CCD) experiments are conducted. An ablation rate prediction model and a MRZ range prediction model of Invar 36 alloy multi-pulse femtosecond laser processing are built. The Pareto optimal solution set for Invar 36 alloy multi-pulse femtosecond laser processing is obtained with the minimum MRZ range and the maximum ablation rate as optimization objectives using genetic algorithm.

The external static magnetic field has significant influence on the microstructure and mechanical properties of weld bead during 316L stainless steel laser welding. The quality of a weld joint of laser welding supported by external magnetic field (LWSMF) is significantly influenced by the processing parameters. Hence, how to choose appropriate processing parameters for a good-quality weld joint of LWSMF is significantly important. This paper develops a hybrid methodology by combining radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) and genetic algorithm (GA) to address this issue. Firstly, the bead appearance, which is the external manifestation of the weld geometrical imperfection and weld quality, is quantitatively described and selected as the indices to judge the weld quality of LWSMF. Then the physical experiments are conducted, where laser power (LP), laser welding speed (WS), and the flux density of magnetic field (MFD) are taken into consideration as the input process parameters. Secondly, the RBFNN model, as its excellent global prediction performance, is adopted to establish the relationships between the inputs and outputs. Thirdly, based on the constructed RBFNN model, the effects of different input parameters on the bead appearance are analyzed and the global process parameter space exploration is performed by using GA. At last, the verification experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the calculated optimal process parameters. Results demonstrate that the spatter defects decrease and the grains are refined under the influence of external magnetic after optimization. On the whole, the proposed hybrid methodology shows great promise for improving the effectiveness and stability of LWSMF. (C) 2017 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Novelty 3D processing maps of GH4175 superalloy to predict the instability deformation and optimal processing parameters

In this paper, a novel 3D processing map is developed by the three-dimensional cubic spline interpolation method. This 3D processing map is capable of reflecting the continuous variation of the efficiency of power dissipation and instability parameter as the processing parameters change. It is used to predict the instability deformation and optimal processing parameters during the hot deformation of GH4175 superalloy. The results indicate that the instability deformation is mainly contributed to the adiabatic shear band (ASB) and flow localization. The average grain size inside ASB, in transition region and outside ASB is similar to 200 nm, similar to 1 mu m and similar to 2 mu m, respectively. The grain refinement of GH4175 superalloy inside ASB is motivated by Rotational Dynamic Recrystallization (RDR) and is also further accelerated by Discontinuous Dynamic Recrystallization (DDRX) and Hetero-epitaxial Recrystallization(HERX). Based on the prediction of 3D processing map, the deformation temperature ranging from 1052 degrees C to 1100 degrees C, the strain rates ranging from 0.001 s(- 1) to 0.067 s(- 1) and the strains ranging from 0.1 to 0.69 are chosen as the optimum processing parameters during isothermal compression of GH4175 superalloy. A perfect superplastic behavior with a high elongation of over 260 % for GH4175 superalloy is verified at this region.

Parameter optimization and mechanical properties of 42CrMo4 manufactured by laser powder bed fusion

To study the manufacturability and mechanical properties of a low alloy heat treatable medium carbon steel by additive manufacturing, 42CrMo4 (AISI4140) specimens were manufactured by laser powder bed fusion. Influences of processing parameters on relative density and crack density were investigated. Moreover, Charpy impact tests, microhardness, and tensile tests for specimens with and without preheating were also studied. Results showed that the primary defects in the microstructure of additively manufactured samples were the lack of fusion pores and microcracks. The variation of processing parameters influences the porosity and microcracks prominently. The impact toughness of specimens with preheating is around three times higher than specimens without preheating. However, post heat treatment for as-built specimens, such as tempering at different temperature ranges, did not improve the impact toughness further. The detailed fracture mechanism for the massive difference in the impact toughness was investigated.

Parameter optimization of Gas Tungsten-Arc Repair Welding Technique in Mg-6Gd-3Y-0.5Zr Alloy

The feasibility of gas tungsten-arc repair welding was studied in Mg-6Gd-3Y-0.5Zr alloy. The processing parameters were optimized by sequential experiments including comparative study to find proper filler material and the type of welding groove by butt welding, and the investigation of influence of preliminary heating, area of repair welding, post-weld heat treatment and thickness of welding plate on the mechanical properties of welded joints. In addition, the analysis of microstructure and tensile properties of Mg-6Gd-3Y-0.5Zr alloy was performed for comparison with welded joints. The results showed that the microstructure in as-cast condition was characterized by equiaxial -Mg and eutectic phase, including Mg-24(Gd,Y)(5) and Mg-5(Gd,Y) phase. The strength was improved greatly after T6 treatment, while the ductility was remarkably decreased. The filler material and the type of welding groove were chosen as Mg-6Gd-3Y-0.5Zr alloy and V-type, respectively. The optimal process parameters of repair welding consisted of preliminary heating, T6 treatment after welding, 4mm-thickness plates and welding area with the diameter of phi 15mm. The tensile strength of welded joints reached the maximum value up to 295MPa, equivalent to 99.7% of base material.

Investigations on process parameters of cluster magnetorheological polishing in a planet motion model

A planetary-type cluster magnetorheological polishing device with a rotating magnetic field was proposed to solve the problems of abrasive accumulation and low polishing efficiency caused by the untimely restoration of the conventional magnetic chain. Considering the microstructural deformation and squeeze-strengthening effect of magnetorheological polishing fluid, a material removal rate model was established based on the principle of fluid dynamic pressure and verified by experiments. The relationships between material removal rate or roughness and processing parameters were confirmed by multiple linear regression analyses, respectively. And the processing parameters optimization was made by linear weighting method under the premise of establishing the evaluation system. The results show that the eccentricity and angular velocity ratio are proportional and inversely proportional to MRR, respectively. When the polishing fluid is squeezed, the material removal rate can be significantly increased from 7 to 21 nm/min, but the roughness will be reversed at a gap of less than 0.9 mm. After the optimization of processing parameters, the workpiece roughness after rough and fine polishing was reduced from 1.079 & mu;m and 1.083 & mu;m to 0.346 & mu;m and 0.184 & mu;m, with a reduction of 67.9% and 83.01%.

Pulsed laser ablation was used to create Ag nanostructures - nanoparticles and nanowires. Two different type of target motion were used - rotation and computer controlled by using an XY stage. The impact was investigated of the trajectory of the laser beam on the target surface on the characteristics of the ablation process itself and the nanostructures obtained. Two circular trajectories of different diameters generated at the target rotation were utilized. The fundamental (lambda = 1064 nm) and the third harmonic (lambda(THG) = 355 nm) wavelengths of a Nd-YAG laser system were used for the fabrication procedure. They were selected in order to study the influence of the two processes accompanying the ablation procedure, namely, scattering and absorption of the incident light by the nanostructures already created (the so-called self-absorption). The two possible nanostructures - nanoparticles and nanowires, were obtained by an appropriate choice of the laser fluence for each of the wavelengths selected. The optical extinction spectra of the fabricated colloids allowed an indirect assessment of the shape and size-distribution of the nanostructures obtained, whose size and morphology were visualized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was established that the most appropriate processing conditions in terms of the efficiency of the ablation and reproducibility of the sample characteristics were achieved using a computer controlled XY stage.

Lap-MRF, which is considered as a novel flexible finishing method, can produce smooth optical surface. In this paper, the influence mechanism of the optical surface roughness in Lap-MRF is analyzed. The effect of the processing parameters on the optical surface roughness after Lap-MRF is studied by orthogonal experiments. Based on the experimental results, the processing parameters of Lap-MRF are optimized to achieve optical surface with low RMS (Root -Mean -Square) value. At last, a K9 optical surface is fmished under the optimal processing parameters and its optical surface roughness is improved to 0.459nm RM S from 1.669nm RMS. The results verify that Lap-MRF has great potential in finishing optical surface with high quality.

Injection molding technology produces mass plastic products. Polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) is the thermoplastic material used to make various plastic products for industrial equipment, electrical components, consumer goods, car industry, and aerospace applications. The product quality is really important and mainly depends on the processing parameters during injection molding process. This paper demonstrates a method of using Box-Behnken design for optimizing the processing parameters to reduce the defects for injection molding process. The processing parameters include the melt temperature, injection pressure, packing time, and filling time that is introduced to investigate the effect of injection molding parameter on the product quality problems such as weldline, short shot, shrinkage, and warpage. The results show that Box-Behnken is effective method in design of experiment procedure for optimizing the technical parameters of the manufacturing process to improve product quality.
