The housing industry faces challenges in product data management, resulting in negative effects on productivity, efficiency, and quality. The purpose of the study presented in this paper is to elaborate on requirements and functions of a support system to mitigate challenges with product data management in the wooden single-family house industry. As a support system, a pilot product lifecycle management (PLM) system was developed with functions to fulfill the requirements. The support system was installed and tested in a real -world setting, a wooden single-family house company, Company T. The paper contributes with the insights that a PLM system for industrialized house building can be developed, fulfilling the requirements in this specific industry. The functions developed were perceived to have value and could, for Company T, mitigate their challenges with product data management. The support system facilitate integration between the pilot PLM system, the building information modeling tool and the enterprise resource planning system at Company T. Based on the study carried out, the paper concludes that a PLM system is feasible, and that it might be a way to mitigate challenges with product data management in the wooden single-family house industry.

Design and Integration of JMF-Based Multimedia-Supported Environment in a product data management System

In order to meet discipline experts' requirements of knowledge exchange, conflict resolution, and design decision in the collaborative product design process, a JMF-based multimedia-supported environment (MSE) is proposed. The requirement to develop the MSE for multi-disciplinary collaborative design process is analyzed. Related key technologies of multimedia applications required to build the integrated MSE are described. Construction of multimedia interaction mode, design of system architecture, and formulation of development plan are implemented. Discipline experts' roles are defined, and safety certification function of application programs is achieved. Based on the development platform of Java 2 enterprise edition (J2EE), the realization of the system is completed, and the system is integrated into a previously developed product data management system. Through system experiment and test, the JMF-based system environment can well meet the needs of multimedia real-time interaction, knowledge sharing, and collaborative decision making in the process of collaborative product design.

For many years, it has been the industry’s intention to support its product life-cycle with different data formats and versions of the same model in order to provide the necessary information for all the downstream processes. The creation of Model-Based Definition technology eliminates the necessity of diverse file formats by substituting them with a single file that is capable of carrying all the important information for processes, such as design, manufacturing, etc. Furthermore, to achieve a proper distribution of the data to the departments involved in the development of the product, many approaches exploited the PLM and the model-based workflows emerged from these technologies’ cooperation. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a proposed methodology, which utilizes the capabilities of MBD technology along with the use of PDM software to refine the data sharing process and streamline the collaboration among different departments of a company, without being limited to the design and manufacturing of the product. Aiming to eliminate counterproductive data formats and collaboration methods used in the industry, the proposed method uses an MBD 3D PDF-based template as the main source of the necessary information for all the product life-cycle processes. This lightweight template file, in cooperation with the PDM software, provides the ability to all the departments to obtain the required information, and contribute to the generation of them through a proposed workflow. Moreover, the results concerning the duration of different production activities obtained by the implementation of the method to an industrial equipment company, are used to demonstrate its efficiency.

The product development today handles increasingly complex products and to be able to compete on the current market companies need an effective PLM/PDM system to manage the lifecycle, models, and data connected to their products. Three of the factors for success in product development are time, cost, and quality. Which need to be supported by the processes and tool used in a project. product development often uses both physical and analytical prototypes. The analytical method of simulation is an important element in product development that has started to shift from being a validation and verification tool at the last stages in the development process to be more included in the early stages. Simulation models often generate a big amount of data and because of this, the storing and management of them can be troublesome. Therefore, there is a need to have closer integration between design and simulation. The purpose of the thesis is to do an inquiry about what a PLM system contributes to in a company regarding their product development and why and how simulation models can be connected to the company's PDM system. The methods used during the study were literature reviews, interviews, workshops, and a survey. The results show that in the literature the benefits of using a PLM and PDM system are connected to the factors for a successful product development which are time, quality and cost. While the employees think traceability, reuse of data and storing is the most important benefits. Simulation models are beneficial to the product development process and should, therefore, be stored in a way that there is a connection between the simulation model and the design model. For the employees, the highest-ranking benefits with adding simulation models to the system are traceability, reuse of simulation models and control over simulation models. A manual for how the simulation engineer can utilize the system and add simulation models to it are presented.

Integration of engineering change objects in product data management databases to support engineering change

This study proposes a product data management (PDM) database that can support engineering change analysis (ECA). It can integrate ECA with the existing main product development process managed by PDM systems. Since engineering change (EC) history is a key EC data element that enables ECA, this study extends PDM databases to represent the EC history with existing entities for ECs and associated products and their product structures. To show the feasibility of the proposed PDM database, this study integrates a prototype PDM system with on-line analytical processing (OLAP) tools and a data mining module for ECA. It also applies the implemented tools to two typical ECA applications, EC evaluation and EC propagation problems. The illustrative application examples show that the proposed PDM database can support ECA through multidimensional data analysis with OLAP and data mining with association rules. product management (PM), and product-centric approaches to data analytics can be valuable during Industry 5.0 (I5.0). This study explores the impact of I5.0 on data analytics by taking a PM perspective. A scoping review was conducted to synthesize a conceptual model for data analytics. The findings indicate specific characteristics of I5.0 for data analytics. The developed concept forms a logical whole consisting of flexible business processes, scalable data management, and advanced analytics. productization, master data, dynamic data models, and holistic end-to-end product lifecycle analytics are at the core of human-centric tailored capabilities and deeper ethical, sustainability, and collaborative insights. © 2024 IEEE.

Effective consistency management for large-scale product data

The research presented is aimed to develop and investigate an effective method for management of consistency of large-scale product data. Such data are usually driven by formal models in EXPRESS language being part of the STEP standard (ISO 10303). To be consistent and unambiguously interpretable by computer programs the data must satisfy syntactic and semantic rules defined by the standards. Although ACID principles (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, and Durability) are widely recognized and recommended for any information system, it is hard to guarantee the consistency of such complex data. Complete semantic validation requires extremely high costs, often exceeding the processing time of individual transactions. Periodic validation or validation on user demand is possible, but at a high risk of losing data that become useless in case of rule violation. In the paper an effective incremental method for semantic validation of product data is presented. It is guaranteed that the final data revision is consistent if only the original revision was consistent and the spot rules were not violated. Static analysis of the model specifications is applied and a dependency graph is formed. The dependency graph enables to identify the spot rules and the data that should be inspected against the rules. Computational experiments prove the effectiveness of the method in conformity to complex large-scale product data managed under an innovative platform PDMhub.

PDM systems were created in the mid-1980s. The main goal was to organize the drawings and data sheets, which were created during the designing process. Integration of PDM and CAD led to a situation where an increasing number of features were required from the systems to help the designers. Finally, this situation developed to a point where no one was actually sure what contribution the PDM was making. Nowadays, sheet metals are universally used in different kind of industries. Designing is challenging in many ways, therefore, if the PDM could recognize sheet metal parts it could help the designing process. With the help of the PDM and the DFMA, the products should be more manufacture friendly and the designing time possibly shorter. This paper points out the complexity of designing sheet metals, and raises the question of whether the PDM system could be a helpful tool for designing manufacture friendly products.

For promoting competitive advantages, many companies seek new ways to decrease costs in global markets. Information products contain more functionality, and their developments are continuous process to meet customer requirements. Developers have to manage and control a range of technology and increasing amount of product data. This research selects an old established enterprise named T-company in Taiwan as the subject. We found out 21 theoretical critical success factors (CSFs) from 6 case studies via three research and development departments of T-company. We pointed out 10 most important CSFs should be the critical point before and during the product data management implementation, which can be a reference model to executives of related electronic businesses.
