Efficient sequencing of processes and resource allocation are critical in production planning scenarios, such as manufacturing workshops and construction projects, to enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs. Resource allocation in such environments is often challenged by temporal constraints, process interdependencies, and resource limitations, which complicate scheduling and increase the risk of delays. This study presents a multi-agent-based simulation system to address these challenges. A scheduling optimisation model is developed to simulate and optimise resource allocation in complex processes with network structures and temporal constraints. The primary objective is to minimise production completion time while ensuring effective resource allocation. Additionally, an adaptive, partially distributed Agent-Based Modelling and Simulation framework is proposed to simulate the execution logic of real-world processes, integrating key factors such as resource limitations, process interdependencies, and real-time decision-making. A priority-based genetic algorithm is also designed and embedded into the multi-agent system to further optimise process sequencing and resource distribution. Simulation experiments across varying case scales validate the model and algorithm. This study highlights the potential of agent-based simulation for solving complex engineering challenges and provides new insights for addressing resource allocation problems in network-structured, time-constrained environments.

An Asynchronous Quasi-Cloud/Edge/Client Collaborative Federated Learning Mechanism for Fault Diagnosis

Although the federated learning method has the ability to balance data and protect data privacy by means of model aggregation, while the existing methods are difficult to achieve the effectiveness of centralized learning under data sharing. The existing federated structure only has a certain degree of confidentiality for data privacy, that is to say, each client can reconstruct a part of the information of other clients based on the model parameters shared between the server and the clients under certain conditions. In order to make the federated learning mechanism more confidential,we breaks the existing mechanism that the parameters between the federated model and the client model are completely shared, and establishes a new asynchronous quasi-cloud/edge/client collaborative federated learning mechanism. We construct a hierarchical multi-level confidential communication network, where the network parameters are shared in a way of quasi-cloud/edge/client coordination without data communication. The cloud and the edges respectively use the sequential Kalman filter algorithm to perform an asynchronous fusion of the network parameters uploaded in their respective fusion centers for the next round of updates; The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is verified on the data of a type of rotating machinery.

Robust defect detection in 2D images printed on 3D micro-textured surfaces by multiple paired pixel consistency in orientation codes

Defect detection is now an active research area for production quality assurance. Traditional visual inspection systems are developed by human beings, which is a time-consuming, labour-intensive, and highly error-prone process, and are therefore unreliable. To overcome these problems, the authors proposed a new method for detecting defects when printing on a 3D micro-textured surface. They utilise an orientation code as the basis to resist the fluctuations in illumination. Based on the consistency of the pixel pairs, they developed a model called multiple paired pixel consistency to represent the statistical relationship between each pixel pair in defect-free images. Finally, based on this model, they designed a defect detection method. Even with different defect sizes, illumination conditions, noise intensities, and other characteristics, the performance of the proposed algorithm is extremely stable and highly accurate, and the recall, precision, and F-measure in most of the results can reach 0.85,0.93, and 0.9, respectively. In addition, the defect detection rate can reach almost 100%. This demonstrates that the authors' approach can achieve state-of-the-art accuracy in real industrial applications.

Metropolis Monte Carlo for tomographic reconstruction with prior smoothness information

The Metropolis Monte Carlo algorithm was applied to produce tomographic reconstructions from scarce projection data supplemented by prior information about the smoothness of the object. The prior information is represented by means of local energy functions, which are added to the projection error. The proposed prior function is an extension of previous proposals of border filters, the novelty introduced here being an adaptive control of the filter during the reconstruction process. The method was tested on synthetic phantoms and the reconstructions of a real object from a small number of projections. The technique shows good results in images with piecewise homogeneous regions, and can be useful in certain applications, where the scanning views are within an angular range that is either limited or sparsely sampled, as the detection of material defects in non-destructive testing or special anatomical components in medical images. Finally, the method is applied to the reconstruction of an industrial application of a stainless-steel BNC elbow from very few projections.

Feature extraction using frequency spectrum and time domain analysis of vibration signals to monitoring advanced ceramic in grinding process

New alternatives for monitoring the ceramic grinding process have been studied. Monitoring vibration signals is one of the most successful methods because some characteristics that describe the behaviour and influence of the process on ground parts are only noticeable by studying such signals. This study aims to monitor the finishing of advanced ceramics during the surface grinding process via digital processing of the vibration signals. Experimental tests were performed using a surface tangential grinding machine with a diamond grinding wheel and alumina (Al2O3) test specimens. The vibration signal was measured by an accelerometer and recorded by an oscilloscope at a 2 MHz sampling rate. The tests were conducted at different depths of cut for two workpiece speeds (v(w)) under mild and severe machining conditions. Confocal microscopy and surface roughness R-a measurements were performed after grinding each workpiece to classify the samples. Digital signal processing was performed to achieve feature extraction. A frequency range of 800 Hz-2 kHz was most strongly related to the post-grinding ceramic condition. A correlation was found between vibration and integrity of the ceramic workpiece because the vibration signal was proportional to the surface roughness for each cutting depth used. To support the conclusion presented, a statistical analysis through variance by analysis of variance was performed.

Adaptive NC Path Generation From Massive Point Data With Bounded Error

This paper presents an approach for generating curvature-adaptive finishing tool paths with bounded error directly from massive point data in three-axis computer numerical control (CNC) milling. This approach uses the moving least-squares (MLS) surface as the underlying surface representation. A closed-form formula for normal curvature computation is derived from the implicit form of MLS surfaces. It enables the generation of curvature-adaptive tool paths from massive point data that is critical for balancing the trade-off between machining accuracy and speed. To ensure the path accuracy and robustness for arbitrary surfaces where there might be an abrupt curvature change, a novel guidance field algorithm is introduced. It overcomes potential excessive locality of curvature-adaptive paths by examining the neighboring points' curvature within a self-updating search bound. Our results affirm that the combination of curvature-adaptive path generation and the guidance field algorithm produces high-quality numerical control (NC) paths from a variety of point cloud data with bounded error.

Lemon-YOLO: An efficient object detection method for lemons in the natural environment

Efficient Intelligent detection is a key technology in automatic harvesting robots. However, citrus detection is still a challenging task because of varying illumination, random occlusion and colour similarity between fruits and leaves in natural conditions. In this paper, a detection method called Lemon-YOLO (L-YOLO) is proposed to improve the accuracy and real-time performance of lemon detection in the natural environment. The SE_ResGNet34 network is designed to replace DarkNet53 network in YOLOv3 algorithm as a new backbone of feature extraction. It can enhance the propagation of features, and needs less parameter, which helps to achieve higher accuracy and speed. Moreover, the SE_ResNet module is added to the detection block, to improve the quality of representations produced from the network by strengthening the convolutional features of channels. The experimental results show that the proposed L-YOLO has an average accuracy(AP) of 96.28% and a detection speed of 106 frames per second (FPS) on the lemon test set, which is 5.68% and 28 FPS higher than the YOLOv3, respectively. The results indicate that the L-YOLO method has superior detection performance. It can recognize and locate lemons in the natural environment more efficiently, providing technical support for the machine's picking lemon and other fruits.

Computer-aided modeling and manufacturing of spherical mechanisms via a novel web tool

In this paper, we present a novel web-based computer-aided modeling and manufacturing software tool for spherical mechanisms. Our purpose is to facilitate the analysis, dynamic simulation, and manufacture of one degree of freedom spherical four-bar mechanisms. First, a brief review of some of the current computer-aided design software for spherical four-bar mechanisms is presented. These software packages provide the three-dimensional visualization and computational capabilities necessary to synthesize and analyze spherical four-bar mechanisms. However to date, no readily available and effective tools exist to aid in the modeling and manufacture of spherical mechanisms. Next, the kinematics of spherical four-bar mechanisms are reviewed as they pertain to their geometric modeling and manufacture. Finally, we present our web-based implementation of a computer-aided modeling, simulation, and manufacturing methodology for spherical four-bar mechanisms called SFBDESIGNER (for spherical four-bar designer). SFBDESIGNER facilitates the design, dynamic simulation, prototyping, and manufacture of spherical four-bar mechanisms.

Innovative manufacturing approach for paper-based substrate integrated waveguide components and antennas

This study presents a novel low-cost manufacturing technique for paper-based microwave components. In particular, this work is focused on the implementation of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) passive circuits and antennas. The proposed manufacturing technique requires the preliminary preparation of the metallised paper substrate, obtained by stacking different layers of paper, and eventually gluing two aluminium foils on both faces of the paper substrate. Subsequently, the circuit pattern is obtained by milling machining. Finally, as the SIW structures require metal vias, cylindrical holes are obtained by drilling and then metallised by conductive paste, by adopting a particular technique. The different steps are detailed in this study, and the basic features of the proposed technique are compared with the traditional ink-jet-printing technology typically used for paper-based microwave circuits. Moreover, the fabrication and testing of several SIW components and antennas are presented in a comprehensive way, to demonstrate the potential of the proposed manufacturing technique and its applicability to the development of the next generation of eco-friendly wireless systems.

Concurrent engineering and integrated design have been a major issue over the past two decades especially considering design for X stakes. This paper describes a new proposal of integrated product-process design approach in order to improve the efficiency and the robustness of the assembly process planning phase. The proposed method illustrates how to consider functional requirements and technical constraints as early as possible to improve design principles and define the best assembly sequences fulfilling these requirements. Lastly, the proposed research is applied on an aeronautic case study for illustrating the potential benefits of such an approach in terms of taking account of assembly knowledge in the early product development stages.
