Review of surface defect detection of steel products based on machine vision

Steel plays an important role in industry, and the surface defect detection for steel products based on machine vision has been widely used during the last two decades. This paper attempts to review state-of-art of vision-based surface defect inspection technology of steel products by investigating about 170 publications. This review covers the overall aspects of vision-based surface defect inspection for steel products including hardware system, automated vision-based inspection method, existing problems and latest development. The types of steel product surface defects composition of visual inspection system are briefly described, and image acquisition system is introduced as well. The image processing algorithms for surface defect detection of steel products are reviewed, including image pre-processing, region of interest (ROI) detection, image segmentation for ROI, feature extraction and selection and defect classification. The important problems such as small sample and real time of steel surface defect detection are discussed. Finally, the challenge and development trend of steel surface defect detection are prospected.

HYPERMEDIA AS A TOOL

This article describes the use of hypermedia as a tool with application to the development of a design support system for externally pressurised journal bearings. The design support system was developed using a method which integrates hypermedia, artificial intelligence, and intelligent database technologies together with conventional bearing design techniques, The integration of these technologies makes it possible for the system user to rapidly retrieve design information, efficiently use the bearing expertise embedded in the system, and achieve an optimal bearing design taking into account both numerical and qualitative issues. The system was mainly implemented on the HyperCard of a Macintosh computer. With this system, an appropriate externally pressurised journal bearing design can readily be achieved, The system can also be used as a knowledge bank for educational purposes.

Computer graphics has a long history. Industrial organizations and laboratories drove significant improvements as they adapted and assembled basic capabilities into complex interactive applications. Of particular concern in the early days was providing interactive 3-D applications for computer-aided design and engineering. This article describes the experience of two early industry practitioners who built successful 1970s interactive 3-D systems.

Automatic detection of safety helmet wearing based on head region location

In order to solve the problem of difficult and low precision in the detection of safety helmet wearing in the complex pose of construction worker, a detection method of safety helmet wearing based on pose estimation is proposed. In the pose estimation model of OpenPose, the residual network optimized feature extraction is introduced to obtain the skeletal point information of the construction worker, and then the pose of the construction worker is estimated based on the skeletal point information, three-point localization method is proposed for the front and back pose, and skin colour detection method is proposed for the side pose, and then to determine the head region. The YOLO v4 is used to detect the safety helmet region, and then the construction worker's safety helmet wearing is judged according to whether the head region intersects the safety helmet region or not. Experimental results show that the detection accuracy of the method is higher than other methods, and the adaptability to the environment is stronger.

Computer-Aided Machine Setting for Lapping Optimization

During hypoid gears lapping process, a gear set is running at varying operating positions and under a light load in order to lap the complete tooth surface. The pinions and gears are lapped in pairs. Hence, their tooth surfaces are not only cutters but also workpieces. In the contact region, the contact pressure and sliding speed are different from point to point. This makes lapping to be a very complicated abrasive wear process. So far, knowledge about the relationship between the removed materials and the lapping time as well as how to optimize the lapping process is quite limited. An algorithm was presented (Jiang , 2008, "Simulation of Hypoid Gear Lapping," ASME J. Mech. Des., 130(11), p. 112601) to determine the wear coefficient k for the lapping process of hypoid gears. With the obtained wear coefficient k, a methodology for simulating the lapping process was proposed. Based on the wear coefficient obtained, this work presents a computer-aided machine setting procedure to optimize the lapping cycle in order to improve the lapping quality and efficiency.
