Layer thickness estimation of 3D printed model for digital multimedia forensics

Layer thickness is the major parameter of the 3D printing process that should be investigated for digital forensic purposes. However, despite its importance, there have been no studies yet on this parameter of layer-manufactured models. This Letter focuses on an effective estimation of layer thickness parameters for layer-manufactured models. Based on the analysis results of the scanned 3D model, the proposed method provides a new solution for estimating the layer thickness. Regarding potential applications including multimedia forensics, the proposed estimator would be useful in a variety of fields.

Simulation of a Refill Friction Stir Spot Welding Process Using a Fully Coupled Thermo-Mechanical FEM Model

Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is a solid state joining technology that has the potential to be a replacement for processes like resistance spot welding and rivet technology in certain applications. To optimize the process parameters and to develop FSSW tools, it is important to understand the physics of this complex process that involves frictional contact, high temperature gradients, and large deformations. This paper presents a fully coupled thermo-mechanical finite element model (FEM) model of the plunge phase of a modified refill FSSW. The model was developed in Abaqus/Explicit and the simulation results included the temperature, deformation, stress, and strain distributions in the plates being joined. An experimental study was also conducted to validate the temperatures predicted by the model. The simulation results were in good agreement with the temperatures measured in the experiment. Also, the model was able to predict in a reasonable fashion the stresses and plastic strains in the plates.

ADP-based decentralised algorithm for the optimal energy flow of the electricity-natural gas system

This study proposes a decentralised methodology to deal with the optimal energy flow (OEF) problem of the electricity-natural gas system (EGS). The OEF problem of EGS is formulated as a multi-stage dynamic programming (DP) process, and the approximate DP algorithm is used to decompose it into subproblems. The independent decision of each subproblem can be made by solving Bellman's equation, requiring just a moderate interchange of information among different subproblems. Such that the information privacy and dispatch independency of subsystems (including electricity and natural gas (NG) subsystems) can be ensured. Different from most existing decentralised algorithms, the impact of one subproblem's decision on other subproblems can be estimated in the proposed algorithm, and the parameters of the proposed algorithm are not required for tuning, which makes more sense in real applications. Furthermore, an improved linear cut technique is proposed to handle the non-convexity of the NG network model, so that the tightness of all gas flow constraints can be ensured. Case studies containing small, large and complicated EGSs validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Defect detection of printed circuit board based on lightweight deep convolution network

With the rapid development of the electronic industry, the defect detection of printed circuit board (PCB) components is becoming more and more important. The types of PCB components are diverse and accompanied by complex character information, which is difficult to identify. The traditional detection method is inefficient, and it is unable to effectively perform the diversified category detection of PCB components and character recognition in complex scenes. The deep convolutional neural network has obvious advantages in object detection and character recognition, which can be used to implement a PCB component defect detection system. In this study, the authors have established a lightweight PCB type detection model called LD-PCB, which can perform real-time detection while improving detection accuracy. In addition, in the character detection of PCB, they have established a fast and robust character recognition model, called CR-PCB. This model can effectively improve the accuracy of irregular character recognition. Finally, they established and published a dataset of PCB components, and combined with LD-PCB and CR-PCB to realise the PCB defect detection system. This system can realise the functions of defect detection, wrong insertion, missing insertion, and character recognition in industrial PCB production. The results show that the method proposed in this study can effectively detect defects on PCB components.

Leak Detection in a Pipeline Using Modified Line Volume Balance and Sequential Probability Tests

The use of statistical tools to improve the decision process within leak detection is becoming a common practice in the area of computer pipeline monitoring. Among these tools, the sequential probability ratio test is one of the most named techniques used by commercial leak detection systems (Zhang and Di Mauro, 1998, "Implementing a Reliable Leak Detection System on a Crude Oil Pipeline," Advances in Pipeline Technology, Dubai, UAE). This decision mechanism is based on the comparison of the estimated probabilities of leak or no leak observed from the pipeline data. This paper proposes a leak detection system that uses a simplified statistical model for the pipeline operation, allowing a simple implementation in the pipeline control system (Di Blasi, M., 2004, "Deteccion y localizacion de fugas en sistemas de transporte de fluidos incompresibles," MS thesis, Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina). Applying real-time recursive linear regression to volume balance and average pipeline pressure signals, a statistically corrected volume balance signal with reduced variance is derived. Its average value is zero during normal operation whereas it equals the leak flow under a leak condition. Based on the corrected volume balance, differently configured sequential probability ratio tests are presented to extend the dynamic range of detectable leak flow. Simplified mathematical expressions are obtained for several system performance indices, such as spilled volume until detection, time to leak detection, minimum leak flow detected, etc. Theoretical results are compared with leak simulations on a real oil pipeline. A description of the system tested over a 500 km oil pipeline is included, showing some real data results.

Adaptive matching algorithm for laser detection signals of linear cutting tool marks

Since it is very difficult to compare linear cutting tool marks quickly and quantitatively using existing image-processing and three-dimensional scanning methods, an adaptive matching algorithm for laser detection signals of linear cutting marks is proposed. Using locally weighted scatterplot smoothing regression, the proposed algorithm first performs noise reduction on the surface signals of linear cutting tool marks that are detected by a laser displacement sensor. Trends of the thick and consistent features of the signal data are then identified and the feature vectors are quantised via cosine vector curve fitting to individually calculate the spatial distances of the samples. Finally, the most similar samples are matched via batch similarity comparison using a dynamic programming (DP) algorithm. The accuracy and validity of the proposed algorithm are verified by similarity comparison tests of actual cutting marks from a variety of samples.
