In this practice note, we document the development of a youth participatory action research (YPAR) program designed by and for Latine youth residing in a small but rapidly growing Latine community. Our community-academic team partnered to cocreate a YPAR curriculum focused on supporting Latine youth in learning about research and developing their own research projects. Participants in the pilot year worked on Photovoice projects centered on topics they identified, including preventing colorism and machismo and increasing access to mental health services. We reviewed lessons learned from this work, including challenges engaging young people and creating linguistically inclusive spaces.

Background: Negative affect is prevalent among adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and may impact diabetes self -management and outcomes through stress -related behaviors such as disordered eating. Methods: We describe the development of and design for the adaptation of a mindfulness -based intervention (MBI) for adolescents with T1D and negative affect. BREATHE-T1D is an MBI designed to target negative affect that has been tailored to address the unique lived experiences of adolescents with T1D. Qualitative interviews with stakeholders and participants were used to inform iterative adaptations to the intervention and control curricula over the course of the study. The primary aim of this paper is to describe the design, development, and protocol of the present pilot feasibility trial. Conclusions: Iterative, qualitative methodology throughout the adaptation of an intervention is important for ensuring the resulting intervention is relevant and meaningful for the target population. Evaluating a Web-Based Health-Promoting Dialogue Tool in School Health Services: Feasibility and User Experiences

Adolescence is a sensitive period in life and a time to redefine and learn new skills. In Norway, school health services provide individual health-promoting consultations with all eighth-grade students. As an aid to support these consultations, a dialogue tool called SchoolHealth was developed using a co-creation approach. SchoolHealth consists of a web-based health information form designed to be completed by the students and generates individual feedback reports to help the school nurses to prepare for the consultation and tailor it to the individual student's need. Our aims were to evaluate the feasibility and user experiences of SchoolHealth among students and school nurses using a mixed methods approach. A total of 79 eighth-grade students (69% of those invited) and four school nurses from three schools participated. Analyses indicated that SchoolHealth was feasible, promoted reflection among students, and helped prepare students and school nurses for the consultation.

Connecting Kids to Care: Developing a School-Based Telehealth program

School-based telehealth is an efficient and effective way to overcome barriers to care and improve health equity for children in rural and underserved communities. Empowering health care providers, such as nurse practitioners, to develop successful, sustainable programs may contribute to improved access to care and improved health outcomes for the children served. Using a structured framework for program development is essential to successful implementation when connecting school-age children to care through a school based telehealth program. The Telehealth Service Implementation Model provides a robust structure with requisite components to develop and implement a successful school-based telehealth program. ? 2020 Elsevier Inc. Purpose During anesthesiologists' careers, a leave of absence (LOA) is common. After prolonged leave, updating may be beneficial in reducing concerns about knowledge and skill decrements. Although formal return-to-work (RTW) courses and checklists assist UK practitioners, and Australia mandates a one-month RTW program for each year away from practice, no Canadian RTW programs exist. This project aimed to determine the needs of anesthesiologists for an RTW program. Methods This quality improvement activity developed a needs analysis survey that was sent to all practicing anesthesiologists in Alberta. Respondents provided their opinions about the requirements necessary for an RTW program. Results Seventy-three of 350 eligible participants (21%) responded;one-third of respondents were female. Thirty-four respondents (47%) had taken at least one LOA, with a median [interquartile range] duration of 6 [3-12] months. Overall, respondents thought the duration of an LOA requiring formal RTW updating should be 12 [6-15] months, with a median updating period of 7 [5-20] days. Those who had previously taken an LOA thought updating should occur after a shorter absence (11 [6-12] vs 12 [6-24] months, P = 0.009) and be shorter (5 [3-12] vs 10 [5-26] days, P = 0.007). Comments indicated RTW updating should be flexible and individualized. Upgrades of computer systems and equipment plus specific skills retraining were identified. Conclusions Leave of absences are common among anesthesiologists. Appropriate departmental support before, during, and after a gap in clinical practice could be provided by an RTW program to help endorse knowledge, skills, and confidence. Results identified the needs of Albertan anesthesiologists and provided initial guidance in the design of a user-centred RTW program.

The Oncology and Sexuality, Intimacy, and Survivorship program Model: An Integrated, Multi-disciplinary Model of Sexual Health Care within Oncology

Cancer-related sexual dysfunction is documented as one of the most distressing and long-lasting survivorship concerns of cancer patients. Canadian cancer patients routinely report sexuality concerns and difficulty getting help. In response to this gap in care, clinical practice guidelines were recently published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology. A sweeping trend is the creation of specialized clinics for patients' sexual health concerns. However, this much-needed attempt to address this service gap can be difficult to sustain without addressing the cancer care system from a broader perspective. Herein, we describe the implementation of a tiered systemic model of cancer-related sexual health programming in a tertiary cancer center. This program follows the Permission, Limited Information, Specific Suggestions, Intensive Therapy (PLISSIT) model, used previously for guiding individual practitioners. Visually, the model resembles a pyramid. The top 2 levels, corresponding to Intensive Therapy and Specific Suggestions, are comprised of group-based interventions for common cancer-related sexual concerns and a multi-disciplinary clinic for patients with complex concerns. The bottom 2 levels, corresponding to Permission and Limited Information, consist of patient education and provider education and consultation services. We describe lessons learned during the development and implementation of this program, including the necessity for group-based services to prevent inundation of referrals to the specialized clinic, and the observation that creating specialized resources also increased the likelihood that providers would inquire about patients' sexual concerns. Such lessons suggest that successful sexual health programming requires services from a systemic approach to increase sustainability.

Creating the Hematology/Oncology/Stem Cell Transplant Advancing Resiliency Team: A Nurse-Led Support program for Hematology/Oncology/Stem Cell Transplant Staff

Background: Burnout, moral distress, compassion fatigue, and posttraumatic stress disorder are concerns for health-care staff. Due to the high mental, physical, and emotional demands of the pediatric hematology/oncology profession, workplace supports should be in place to address the needs of the staff. A nurse-led support program is one strategy to enhance staff well-being. Methods: The Hematology/Oncology/Stem Cell Transplant Advancing Resiliency Team (HART) is a nurse-led peer-to-peer on-site support program for multidisciplinary staff caring for hematology/oncology patients. HART coaches, working 8-hour shifts, covering both day and night shift hours, are present 3 days a week on the unit. HART offers a confidential space for one on one or group interactions, educational sessions, assistance with work related, patient-care based, or personal concerns, and various forms of integrative therapies. Results: There have been over 1,100 coach consults and 98 HART shifts worked. The most commonly reported changes since HART began include staff feeling more supported by leadership and staff making time for breaks during the work shift. A 25.6% increase in staff reporting to be extremely satisfied with unit support was found. Discussion: Cultivating a culture of staff support is important. Due to COVID-19, physical HART coach presence was put on hold for 4 weeks and virtual interventions were trialed. Since its return, coach consult numbers have been steadily rising. Having a support program led by coaches with direct experience understanding the emotional toll of caring for the pediatric hematology/oncology patient population was found to be well utilized, feasible through donor funding, and measurable via staff report.

Internet health information education for older adults: A pilot study

This study aimed to develop internet health information education program, and to explore the program's feasibility and preliminary effects. We made use of an intervention mapping approach and adopted as conceptual framework the information-motivation-behavioral skills model to develop the program. We evaluated the feasibility and the impact of the education program using a single-group pretest-posttest design using generalized equation estimation. Eleven older adults participated in the classes from January 25 to February 22, 2019. Each outcome of the behavioral theory-based components of the program-computer/Web knowledge (p < .001), attitude toward inter net-based health information (p = .002), eHealth literacy score (p < .001), searching performance scores (p < .001), and level of understanding of internet-based health information (p = .002)-showed significant improvement immediately after the intervention. This pilot study reveals that a behavior theory-based education program for utilizing internet-based health information is an effective way to increase older adults' eHealth literacy. Teaching Adolescents to Manage Their Own Health Care

Many factors impact an adolescent's willingness to appropriately use health-care services and intent to begin the health-care transition process. Published literature continues to show that the way adolescents experience and utilize health-care services is ineffective and has long-term impacts on individuals and systems. Building upon the success of an existing peer-to-peer workshop, a Toolkit was created to provide school-based health professionals the information and resources needed to deliver pertinent information to high school students in one lesson. Of 416 students, over two thirds reported that they plan to be more involved in their health care (69.8%), advocate for themselves in health-care settings (68.0%), talk openly and honestly with health-care providers (71.9%), and learn more about managing their own health care (68.6%). Integrating this information into existing health curricula provided a broader reach with minimal work and promising results that could improve overall health-care transition efforts.

The Constructional Approach: A Compassionate Approach to Behavior Change

Recent criticisms have led some behavior analytic researchers and practitioners to look to other fields, including health care and human service professions, for new ideas on how to increase compassion and empathy in their practices (Rohrer & Weiss, 2022;Taylor et al., 2019). The application of these ideas had led to improved therapeutic relationships between board certified behavior analysts (BCBAs) and caregivers of children with autism. At this time, more work is needed to extend a behavior analytic understanding of compassion to the development and implementation of behavior change procedures. In this article, we identify three critical features of compassion: (1) identifying suffering;(2) demonstrating empathy;and (3) acting to alleviate and prevent suffering. These critical features are then discussed in the context of two behavior change strategies that Israel Goldiamond (1974/2002) formalized, the constructional and pathological approaches. The pathological approach gives priority to the elimination of costly or distressing behavior. The constructional approach gives priority to the establishment, transfer, and reinstatement of repertoires. This article illustrates how the four questions of the constructional approach provide a framework that behavior analysts can use for developing and providing compassionate behavior analytic services.
