In times of fiscal and political uncertainty, philanthropy has become an increasingly important mechanism for building, maintaining, and expanding neurosurgical research programs. Although philanthropy has historically helped launch many hospital systems, scientists and clinicians have generally relied on government grants and industry investment to support research and program infrastructure. However, competition for funds from all sources has increased at the same time as the pipelines for those funds have eroded. Philanthropy can provide salary support to allow neurosurgeons to pursue research and, ultimately, advance the field to improve outcomes for patients. Funds raised can fill financial gaps to recruit and pay for needed research staff, equipment, and facilities. To foster charitable giving, institutions can develop both a culture and processes to promote and support philanthropy. Furthermore, it is essential to ensure that donor relationships are properly nurtured with ongoing stewardship. In addition to cultivating grateful patients, there are numerous creative models of fundraising for research that can be explored, including venture philanthropy, in which voluntary health organizations or individuals partner with academia and industry to invest in early-stage drug development and other innovations. Other approaches include formation of nonprofit foundations and partnerships with other entities to work jointly on shared development goals.

In this article an agenda is discussed for further research, services, and program development identified in the development of the Life Course Model Web site for individuals with spina bifida, their families and the health care providers who work with them. The gaps identified during development of the Life Course Model Web site revealed that there has been minimal progress made on the research agenda since the 2003 consensus document, "Evidence-Based Practice in Spina Bifida: Developing a Research Agenda" or the summary document from the First World Congress on Spina Bifida Research and Care gathering, "The Future is Now," in 2009. Gaps are delineated in the three main areas of the transition curriculum (self-management/health, personal and social relationships, and employment/income support), and recommendations for future research and program development are proposed.

BACKGROUND: Spotted wing drosophila (SWD), Drosophila suzukii Matsumura, was found along the west coast of the United States, beginning in 2008 and 2009, infesting a wide variety of small and stone fruit crops. This pest is a serious economic threat, as noted in its native range (Asia), because it lays eggs within ripening fruit before harvest, leading to crop loss. The aim of this paper is to describe the process in order to create collaboration, communication routes and evaluation methods in response to a new invasive pest. RESULTS: Funding was secured and a program (SWD*IPM) was quickly developed to address social, economic and biological components. Communication routes were outlined, and a stakeholder advisory panel was established to guide program objectives. A central website was created to host up-to-date information. An online monitoring and mapping program for D. suzukii in Oregon fruit-growing regions illustrated the range, distribution and seasonal abundance of the pest. In addition, a program for backyard fruit growers was initiated to examine citizen scientists' roles in managing D. suzukii infestations in the urban setting. A monitoring kit, laminated educational cards, dry fly mounts and quick-time videos were some of the tools used to educate growers. First-year challenges for dealing with a new pest are discussed. CONCLUSION: The discovery and subsequent response to an exotic pest is information intensive and requires a well-planned, coordinated Extension and evaluation effort. The evaluation of institutional condition is regarded as a crucial factor in creating effective and efficient records management systems. In addition, as part of program development Studies, national and international programs' best practices and guidelines need to be investigated. In this study, the Records Management Capacity Assessment System (RMCAS) is evaluated and some practical examples that could be used for developing records management programs are examined. The basic aim of this study is to identify records management practices and to provide an example to institutions that are in the stage of program development. The results of an RMCAS analysis of practices of the Turkish Red Crescent Society (TRCS) are also presented in this study. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Introduction: In many clinical settings, effective cancer control is hampered by barriers related to the acute-care orientation of most medical practices. These include: prioritization of medical problems on the basis of urgency; a problem-oriented medical record that provides no ongoing documentation mechanism for cancer screening; conflicting guidelines; and no method for identifying and targeting persons who are eligible for screening. In contrast, HMOs are uniquely suited to deliver effective cancer control as they have already established many of the linkages required for successful primary and secondary prevention. Methods: This paper describes the principles of a population-based approach to cancer prevention and draws on the experience of Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound, an HMO in western Washington with more than 20 years’ experience in prevention and centralized cancer screening. Methods for selecting and determining priorities among cancer prevention issues, components of successful screening programs, and measures of short- and long-term evaluation are discussed through examples of screening for breast, prostate, cervix, and colorectal cancers. Conclusions: HMOs have provided leadership in the integration of health services and the promotion of continuity of care. Using a population-based approach, cancer prevention programs may be supported by existing automated information services to reduce morbidity and mortality through early detection.

A constructive method of program development is presented. It seeks to unify two important ideas about program development. Namely that programming is a goal-oriented activity and that there should be a correspondence between data and program structures. The latter concept is seen to be extensible beyond the data processing context in which it was originally proposed. Induction provides the vehicle for program development by stepwise refinement, with the final program being constructed by application of a sequence of progressively more powerful generalizations. The design process employed guarantees the correctness of the final program provided that each of the refinement steps have been correctly taken. The method is illustrated by a number of samples.

This program development project integrated dance/movement therapy concepts and Dr. Joy DeGruy's Post traumatic slave syndrome (PTSS) theory, with the goal of helping African American adolescents in Chicago's Roseland neighborhood understand, explore and heal from PTSS. The Delphi Method was used to gather information from collaborators via individual interviews and follow up surveys. Collaborators-all experienced with African American adolescents in the Roseland neighborhood and similar neighborhoods-included one African American dance/movement therapist, one program developer, an arts and education director, and an arts education manager. Information sought from collaborators was guided by a Theory Logic Model resulting in clearly identified inputs, activities, outputs, outcomes and impacts. The resulting program, titled Healing in Motion, consists of ten modules focused on healing domains from DeGruy's PTSS model. Each module uses DMT and creative arts approaches for addressing the healing domains. Practical strengths-based activities support healing and positive community engagement. program adaptations, evaluation suggestions and supplemental activities beyond the current program are suggested.

Based on the American NSWC-10 criterion, we analyzed the mechanical standard components' failure mechanisms and failure modes, through which inducted their common methods and calculation models of reliability prediction according to their specific characteristics. Furthermore, they have been transformed into the metric system standards used in China. And also the development of the software's interface, algorithm, connection and data preservation were accomplished utilizing C# development language in the integrated development environment of Visual Studio to realize the reliability prediction of mechanical standard components.
